Oleg Kojenets Enters Portal

We will stink next year in basketball just as we almost always do. Just keep Hoiberg for as long as he wants to stay. What difference does it make? Whoever we hire to replace him will also suck, unless it is the basketball version of an Urban Meyer who can spin gold out of straw. It just totally mystifies me why we can't seem to turn the corner in basketball. We have all the resources we need and a hungry fan base. It just makes no sense to be this mediocre for this long.

Outside of Kimani Friend and Alecs Maric, Husker hoops has cycled through had alot of Kojenets-bigman-type roster projects over the past 20 years that never seem to pan out. Keita may join that club if he can't ever stay healthy.

It is mystifying why the basketball program can’t ever be competitive. When you see programs like ksu and isu that can field good programs, it makes you wonder. It’s about getting the right coach. But we never do….or can. It does suck to always suck.

Why NU can never have a good basketball team is one of the great mysteries along with who Jack the Ripper was and what happened to Amelia Earhart.

Same thing can be said for our FB program the last many years, but it's even more mind-boggling given our previous history of success.

Let’s be honest… we’d kill for mediocre

I agree.
I am not a superstitious person. I dont believe in tarot, fortunes, magic, ghosts, etc.
However, I legitimately believe that Nebraska basketball is cursed. I’m not kidding when I say that. When you add all the facts up, it’s difficult to come up with an explanation more rational than that. Without getting into specifics since i dn’t have time, however it would be interesting, here’s a few broad inexplicable examples:

-We are, literally, the worst power five program, and worst mid-major program (conferences that play D1 football) in the history of college basketball. This is indisputable.
-Never had a win in the tourney
-3 seed highest we’ve been, got upset first round
-some players who transfer here have shot half as good % wise, literally half as good, from the free throw line than they did before transfer. Not from the field because of “better defenses” mind you, from the line.
-We built state of the art facilities and arena, and it didnt matter at all. Twice. (I said it wouldnt matter the last time).
-Coaches that do well elsewhere cant win here. “But danny knee and tim miles” STOP. Claiming that they were winners is proof we’re cursed and how lowour program is. No other program would think this way if a coach couldnt deliver ncaa wins.

I could keep going, but I digress.

Keep Hoiberg and let his contract simply run out. Not kidding. Dont extend it. If it runs out and he leaves hire some no name for pennies. Dont spend money on basketball. It doesnt matter. We cannot win. Focus on football and on the root of the curse.

A good part of it is because for decades the only thing anyone ever cared about here was the hallowed football program. I guarantee if football was winning championships nobody (or very few) would give two shits about whether or not we were winning in basketball. It’s been the same thing (only opposite) at Kansas. It’s like trying to turn a cruise ship around. It’s gonna take time to change that mentality (if ever). Makes we crazy for Nebraska basketball and KU football.

KU football has far more success than NU basketball.

They were very competitive in February…,.then Minnesota happened. IF you could change that one game they’re in the NIT and the conversation is is a little bit different. Losing 4 rotation guys to injury sure was bad luck.

I feel like .500 should be the floor for NU hoops.

Make the dance 1 out of every 3 years or so. I don't think that is asking a lot.

Rutgers is starting to do that and they have a shitty arena, crappy area, lame school with no tradition in any sport (maybe lacrosse? I have no idea)

Going .500 and making the NIT in year 4 is still a colossal failure

Nothing would be different. Fred is a laughing stock & trev is throwing away multiple additional seasons in order to save money

It’s pathetic & so incredibly short sighted I could puke

NIT for a power 5 school is lame, period.

You think Michigan and their fans are like "Oh man, did you fill out your NIT bracket?? That possible 3rd round match up vs Our Lady of the Worthless Miracle could be really tough"

NIT is like an Iowa FB season where they jerk off about the outback bowl, that gets played at 10am on a Tuesday in front of 12,000 fans.

Again, make the dance 1 out of every 3 seasons (on average) and pretty much always be included in the bubble talk.

Pitino is going to STJ's and they will be on the bubble next year, with a good chance of getting in.

Alabama is the #1 overall seed

Do they not care about football?

Posts like these make me wonder how some of you tie your shoes in the morning

From what I saw I don't think he was going to be much of a factor next year. Just couldn't put on enough bulk to hold up in the big 10 imo. Wish him the best of luck.

Basketball SHOULD be much easier to turn around. But, Nebraska.
Nebraska Football and Basketball have fallen into a black hole that I only hope Rhule can help us climb out of. Both programs have a mentality now where every game, they're just waiting to lose.

Some of this comes from bad leadership in the athletic department under Eichorst and Moos, but frankly, a lot of it is just plain and simple bad luck. When Frost and Hoiberg were hired, you wouldn't be able to find more than a handful of people locally or nationally who didn't think that they were home run hires. Frost was like a 5 star player out of high school who was a bust.

In another world where we had the same players as last year but a coach/staff like Solich or Pelini Nebraska probably would have been at worst 9-3 with additional wins over Northwestern, Georgia Southern, Purdue, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.

Hoiberg looks like he made some progress this year, but no one is happy with his body of work so far. But to be fair, when the 2nd place team in the B10 is 12-8 and the 12th place team is 9-11, it's kind of hard to be super critical. This basketball team beat several teams in the big dance, one twice.

First, GFYS. I didn’t say it couldn’t be done. Alabama basketball has been “meh” for a long time There few schools that do both really well over a sustained period. (Michigan…maybe UCLA…Florida…etc). And I wear flip flops most of the time.

All true. I'm not sure about Hoiberg's progress. It was fun to watch at times this season, but where does that lead? I guess I'll agree that he seemed to figure some things out as a coach and is focused on a more sustainable style.

One question: cursed by whom?

Has to be Bob Devaney - for leaving the BOB for PBA. Where do the most nationally relevant NU sports programs (VB and mens wrestling) perform - the BOB.
The BOB was the state of the art facility needed to get nebraska basketball over the hump in the late 70s. The same sales pitch was used for PBA.

The BOB has been good for wrestling, volleyball, gymnastics, and was ok for womens basketball.

Mens basketball? Nope. More evidence of the curse.

One question: cursed by whom?
No idea. But the level of failure is so absurd and abysmal that there can be no other reason.

Nebraska basketball is the worst D1 program, historically, of any program in any major sport. Even with money, support, facilities, brand recognition, and coaches.

To be honest, everyone is a little bit right in this discussion. Hoiberg was terrible early on at NU, but that was under a different AD. There was noticeable improvement under the new AD, at least to a point where they competed in the conference and actually beat some NCAA tourney teams. The question is how much does a person discount the first 3 years? Under the old AD, everything seemed to be a disaster as there was no vision or direction. That seems to be reversing under Trev. My guess is that while the first few years contribute to the overall assessment, this year and next year are going to make up 90% of the decision of whether Hoiberg is retained after next year. NU made a good jump this year to get to 16-16. I still think 19-20 wins and an NCAA berth is needed to retain Hoiberg next year. Trev did the same thing with Frost, but didn't hesitate to fire him early when it was clear it was not going to work out. If Hoiberg gets to the first week of January 2024 (several games into the B1G conference schedule) and it is apparent there is no chance for the NCAAs, don't be surprised if he makes the decision before the season is over.

I hope Hoiberg makes the jump, but won't be surprised if it doesn't happen.

It is the way it is and will always be. Nebraska will suck at basketball until the day i die and will continue to suck for generations far beyond.
