Nebraska head coach Tim Miles made his annual appearance at Big Ten Media Day in Chicago on Thursday morning. Here is a brief rundown of what he had to say…

Here's the link for the video of Miles' interview

***In typical Miles fashion, he opened his interview by generating a few laughs with a Marshawn Lynch reference: “I’m just here so I don’t get fined.”

***Being in Chicago, Miles was asked about NU’s two new Illinois additions in freshmen Edward Morrow and Glynn Watson. Miles said both will obviously have big roles for the Huskers this season since they only only four players wit returning experience. Miles said Morrow and Watson were both ready to compete at the Big Ten level already, and added that Watson was a “playmaking” guard and was excited about his future.

***Miles was asked about the new college basketball rule changes that will start up this season, and overall he described them as “interesting”. Some of the rules were tested out last year during the NIT, and while scoring went up slightly in the tournament compared to the regular season, Miles said it wasn’t necessarily entirely due to the rule changes. He said he was in favor of some new rules, like making any regular timeout close enough to the scheduled media timeout count as a media timeout. But he did not like some of the other timeout rules, like not allowing coaches to call live ball timeouts within a certain amount of time remaining at the end of the first and second halves.

***Miles said he’s heard senior forward Shavon Shields described as an underrated player in the Big Ten. In fact, Miles said it was a “surprise to me” to that Shields was not considered one of the 10 best players in the league this season in the Preseason All-Big Ten list that came out Wednesday. Miles said he thinks Shields has a chance to be an NBA player in the future, and that “he’s going to score a bunch for us” this season, especially as he improves his outside shot. Miles said NU’s perimeter shooting as a whole was “horrific” in 2014-15, and as Shields improves the rest of the team will as well.
