Luensmann Named Freshman All-American

Lincoln – Already named Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Nebraska’s Chad Luensmann added another honor for the 2016 season on Wednesday morning when he was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. The Altoona, Pa., native was also a second-team All-Big Ten selection and was an unanimous Big Ten All-Freshmen team pick.

Luensmann is the 18th Husker to earn freshman All-America honors and the fourth to do it under Head Coach Darin Erstad, joining Pat Kelly (2012), Kyle Kubat (2012) and Ryan Boldt (2014).

Luensmann was Nebraska’s closer in 2016, filling the shoes of Josh Roeder, who set the school record for career saves last season with 33. Luensmann finished the year with 13 saves in 14 chances, setting a freshman record at Nebraska. He ended the year tied for third with Brett Jensen (2006) on NU’s single-season saves list and was three saves shy of Jensen’s single-season record of 16 saves set in 2005. Nine of Luensmann’s 13 saves came come during Big Ten play, which led the league.

In 38.0 innings over 28 appearances on the year, Luensmann posted a 1.18 ERA, which led NU’s bullpen. He allowed just three extra-base hits all season and held opposing batters to a .171 batting average.

As of Wednesday morning, Luensmann’s 13 saves are tied for 14th in the county and he is tied with Long Beach State’s Chris Rivera for the most saves by a freshman closer in 2016.

This is pretty dang impressive.

I do think there's a stable of really impressive freshman arms on this team and that sets us up really well going forward. I think DE has started to learn a little on the recruiting trail and get guys that really fit into what he wants to do.
