Notre Dame may be losing their annual game

Don't give AF one way or the other bout the Domers but I think with the playoff expanding, that seals the deal they will never need to join a conference.

They would be stupid to.

They play a weaker schedule than Iowa most years and instead of getting blasted by the king of the B10 in the regular season/CCG they get to do it in the playoffs and collect their moral victory.

Lincoln Riley didn’t expect the B1G to be as hard as it was. Lesson learned.
I doubt you will see any B1G teams scheduling games against top 20 caliber non conference teams. The conference slate is already brutal. Those first three non conference games will now be treated as extra scrimmages against very weak directional State teams. Heck, I even think playing Cincinnati is a mistake for us. It won’t be long before Notre Dame has no B1G opponents on their schedule

And likely more schools going to the SEC non-conference scheduling model of playing a weaker opponent in the middle of or late in the season to give starters a break to gain late-season energy.

At this point, ND should just join the ACC. They play six games next year against teams from that league.
It would be nice to see the ACC become more competitive. I suppose ND has $$$ reasons for why they shouldn't do that. Money is all that matters at this point.

That is where they compete the other sports with football carved out. The B1G and SEC should end all regular season games against them until they join a conference.
I hope eventually they will be required to be in a conference of some sort or be left out. It may not be the SEC or BIG 10 it may be whatever the whole things evoles into.

Am I the only one that notices when someone mentions the new 16 team playoff format, they always slide ND as having one of the at large spots?

I bet you don’t know the history behind Nebraska and Notre Dame after the 1925 season ?

It’s the reason why Knute Rockne decided to quit playing Nebraska and play out in LA against USC.
I do.

which is why I suggested we take their spot.

only makes sense.

how ironic if usc loser lincoln riley brings to an end one of the most storied rivalries in the game founded by knute rockne. my god, college sports is in such a shit hole on so many levels these days.

Right now they are doing very well.

As the playoffs expand, they become more accessible. More teams will refuse to schedule anyone with a pulse OOC, as 3 loss teams will be getting into the playoffs, and MANY teams are within striking distance of that.

As predicted, the regular season will continue to be diminished as the money and lure of the playoffs grow.

ND will go undefeated, 1 loss, or 2 losses regular season every year (no CCG) and have a guaranteed spot in the playoffs annually. The reason someone pointed out above that ND is always slated for an at large berth in a 16 team field is that they will rarely face a team in the regular season with a realistic chance of beating them.

Whether or not their fanbase will enjoy playing all unranked teams every season prior to the playoffs remains to be seen.

This is the dilemma I have as an Iowa fan now with playing ISU, especially that it is a home and home. Keeping a now competitive ISU game on the schedule while also playing the BIG10 schedule might not be the best formula for Iowa long term. It probably helps ISU more than it ever helps Iowa.

Hasn't the ACC already agreed to different revenue sharing amounts for different schools like Florida State?
I believe so. Notre Dame would be expecting to get more than any other member and they should. It would still be a great deal for the ACC.

I agree. I want to see the traditional rivalries. That's a key part of what made college football great and much of that is going away.
Yeah, unfortunately the toothpaste is way out of the tube at this point. Since our traditional "rivalries" went away all the way back in 2011 at least we've had time to get used to it.

But yeah, the sport as it existed is long gone, the only question is at what point does it finally settle into a new "permanent" state? All of the constant wild changes over the past 15 years have just been so chaotic, I just wish they would skip all the half-steps and get to whatever semi-pro minor league BS it ends up being once all the dust finally settles and at least have clarity on rules/format/payment/etc.

Count me as someone that sees no logic in it either. Schedule 3 easy wins to start the season and focus on the conference. If I were the AD I'd drop the future OU series regardless of the history.

I don't think TV partners will allow things like that to happen. They still need to have inventory for the first 3 weeks of the season and a couple of early conference games isn't going to be enough.

And, believe it or not, there are still backbone and nutsack possessing men in this sport who want to compete with and try to beat the best

If NU can ever get its shit together, a win over a decent OU team is the kind of thing that helps them get to the playoffs.
