No Extension for Coach Miles

I'd have to admit, I'm somewhat of a casual Basketball fan. I watch them when their on, as I do most Nebraska athletics.

As I see it, Miles is/was a step up from Doc Sadler, although I do believe Doc took the weave to new heights. To boldly go, where no weave has gone before.(sarcasm).

I don't understand all the posts critical of coach Miles.

Does Nebraska have some sort of Basketball tradition I'm not aware of?

Miles biggest mistake was winning to soon...had he built a tournament team in year 3....He would get an extension.

I really don't think Tim cares about an extension right now. He knows that if we win he'll get rewarded. If he falls short and gets canned, he'll pack his bags and somebody else will get a damned good coach. I'm betting he's in Lincoln a long time.

I think this is probably true. Last year was so miserable it kind of erased the brief excitement we all felt after our invite to the dance. I hope he turns it around this year. I like him and hope he succeeds. But damn... the time is over for excuses. There is no good reason Nebraska can't field a competitive basketball team

Doc's teams were among the nation's elite in time of possession - you could count on that.

See that's where I see things differently than many on here. I think we WERE competitive last year. Yeah we lost some games we shouldn't have but man we played some really good teams closer than we have since Nee and beat some really good teams. Then in the B1G tournament at the end of the season we maybe played some of our best basketball of the year. I just think we're really close. I see more young talent on this team than I've seen in a long long time. Hopefully they win enough this year for Miles to get to coach them til graduation.

I like your optimism. Gosh I hope you are right. I would love to see NU hoops take off.

As much as I didn't like his passive attitude losing our former 2 guard probably costs us a game or two. We need our freshman big man to contribute quickly. I think we're going to have enough scorers if we can rebound and defend effectively enough.

Year 3 we finished with 13 wins...we went 13-18. A team that was preseason top 25 won 13 games. I keep seeing people say it was a mistake that we won in year 2. But in all reality, that may be the only thing that saves Miles because we weren't landing some highly rated recruits without the NCAA tournament run. Of course, with that...the wins have to eventually start happening.

Miles is making over 2 million a year and Nebraska has finally invested in its basketball program. If we plan on having zero expectations then we should have kept Doc around at half the price. Luckily, it appears our AD expects our basketball program to be at the very least...solid.

We went 2-14 against top 100 RPI teams last year. Not saying we weren't competitive in most games....but 2-14 is dismal. Sure, we were competitive in a lot of those losses...this also won't be the same team as last year. We have some new parts...but we also lost two 16-17 PPG scorers. Miles is going to have to work his magic like in year 2.

I'm just a 61 year old Husker fan from Bellevue, closing in on retirement and loving every minute of the free time after busting my tail for the last 46 years. Our last child is prepping for his first year at UNL, just like both his grandparents, his two sisters, many uncles, aunts, cousins as well as my wife and I.

Since I shared too much, how about you?

HTO was my first thought after you replied to me the first time as well. Hopefully you aren't him and just a guy trying to talk Husker sports. I can respect that even if I don't agree. but logic and # of posts in a month or so seems to point to you being someone your saying you are not.

a leopard cannot change its spots. We will see soon, if your someone else but you sure as heck seem to be similar to an old poster. If not, you should meet HTO, cause he seems to be your brother from another mother

There are others with just as many posts, in the same amount of time give or take. The ones in charge of this site should be able to verify one way or another. Matter of fact, one of the site moderators posted in another thread 99.99% chance I'm not him but that thread is no longer around. It seems pretty clear a handful of you aren't interested in a new member. I'm okay with that, there are other options to share my passion and viewpoints of the Huskers. This place here isn't the end all be all.

Maybe I should meet him. Maybe I shouldn't meet him. Good luck monitoring this site, I'll head elsewhere.

There is the same reason why Penn State doesn't field a good basketball team. Why Illinois, Purdue and Indiana don't field good football teams. Why Kansas fields an amazing basketball program but a broken football program.

The few programs that seem to excel in both programs are: Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Florida, I'm sure a few others, but they are few and far between. Can it be done? Of course. But it basically takes landing on the right coach who will stay around for a while (I'm talking like 10 years+) to build something sustainable.

The alternative to landing on the right coach with a long tenure is basically shady recruiting. There is no evidence that Baylor has shady recruiting, but I'll go to my grave believing that they do. The rate of improvement across all programs is unheard of for a small town in the middle of Texas at a Christian school. Football, Men's and Women's Basketball all made quantum leaps and until the latest issues with the football program, appeared to be on track to sustain it.

Long post to say - stick with Miles.

Good post. Thanks. But I have a question. Wouldn't you say it is easier to build a basketball program rather than football? Serious question. I am presuming it would be easier but maybe that is the basic flaw in my approach to Miles.

I think because there are fewer players needed to make a splash, one would think that it is easier to build a basketball program, but then again, we don't see programs pop up into the consistently competitive group that easily in either sport.

What we've seen in hoops has been a pretty quick rise by Kansas State (Bob Huggins), West Virginia (Bob Huggins again), Kentucky (yes, a good history, but they were down for a bit with Calipari), I think we'll see it in Texas soon with Shaka. UMASS did it also with Calipari, but then went back down again.

I'm sure I've missed some, but if it was easier, I would expect we'd see more of this, but instead the blue bloods hold the others off pretty successfully.

Frankly, I don't see how people that have watched our team the last 2 years can't be critical of Miles. Some of the worst basketball ever. At least Sadler could coach defense. And Miles' offenses are a drab as I've ever come across.

You can't have ever played or coached basketball if you really believe what you just posted. Sadler could coach mugging the other team and running the shot clock out without getting off a shot. Sh##ty basketball. Horrible basketball. Sadler's coaching (screaming and swearing with ridiculous substitution patterns) Sadler basketball was virtually unwatchable. At least we have some guys now that are a threat on offense. Consistency isn't there but there are stretches where Miles's guys play really good ball.

Nebraska, basketball coaching graveyard. I keep thinking that is going to change, but I'm not so sure.
It'll change if/when we spend the bucks to hire a proven head coach from a major program. If Kansas can do it, there's no reason whatsoever that Nebraska can't also do it.

Facilities no longer are the excuse they once were. Getting crowds to attend home games is no longer the excuse it once seemed to be. Nebraska fans will turn out in sell out numbers for a winning team but they're too smart to be tricked into watching an inferior product.

It all boils down to the coaching now. And that's why Miles has been sent a signal.
