Next NW coach?

I don't like or hate Northwestern, for me they're "just there." And we can joke about their fanbase and it's size but I do feel for their alumni and fans - what a sucky place to be a month before the season begins.
I am not sure if I have met a NW hardcore fan. My neighbor went there and I don't even know if he ever went to a game.

If anything, this might actually get a few more casual NW fans paying attention in the off season.

wait, I thought NW just updated their facilities to be one of the best in the B1G? No, not the stadium, but there was a ton of talk about it a few years ago by the local radio bums.....about how Nebraska now had worse facilities than NW and about how NW was just about to blow up. Jake Sorensen and Sip were just GUSHING about their practice fields next to the lake and all that.

I think they upgrading the stadium and practice stuff is already done.

I don't think this is a great job, but it isn't the worst either.

As I understand it, they have great facilities
Very low expectations
I'd think an argument can be made they are a sleeping NIL giant
In the worst P5 division in all of CFB

Now would I take the job if I was an up and comer with options? Hell no...but you could do worse.

No. Only the practice facility is complete.

The stadium has bigger issues than a few professors. Ryan Stadium is smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood. The homeowners are fighting the stadium renovation too.

It is funny, for obvious reasons, but he would be an amazing hire for them.

God, I can't believe I just said that. But, to get a guy with that much experience and all the connections he has and honestly a guy that is "okay" with losing and is really good with the media, not that there is any NW media coverage.

I mean, he could probably guide them to a 2 win season.
After his first practice:

“Taught the guys a new chant - did a little hip-hip, hooray. You know it doesn’t quite look like football yet, but I think we can get there. I told the team no butt-stuff shenanigans and we will keep building. We got some ice cream and called it a day.”

I read an article (Sorry don’t have link) that there are some admins wanting to put the project on hold until this is sorted.
Ryan Fieldhouse + Walter Athletics Center, not the new smaller stadium.

If I were a younger or middle-aged coach at a mid-major or minor major like Duke I would have no qualms about career suicide. Even if I were a horrible coach who didn't win games I'd probably get 3 years at $5M/yr. I'd bank that $15M and after I got fired take 4%/yr out and live comfortably on $600,000/yr.

Right, plus, you know you will get hired on as an asst coach again so it is not a huge issue.

Wouldn't happen imo. I think Entz is smart enough to stick to his Midwestern roots and take a job like Bohl and Kleiman.
Klieman took over a program that was good and made it better, Bohl is in a conference that is mediocre to bad and can recruit his type of players from the local environment. Erntz would be walking into a meat grinder of a conference that shows no mercy. Bielema knows the success formula and is able to recruit from his past proven success in the B1G, I think Fickell is going to have it rough even though he has previous B1G experience. SEC & B1G football is a different animal than all the other conferences.

Erntz is a capable coach and does extremely well in his environment, but to make that big of a jump with no previous experience in a major conference would be tough. Leipold has worked under several major conference champions as an assistant and DeBoer coached at Fresno prior to his successful jump to the PAC 12. I watch almost every NDSU game and love their style of offense and defense, I would love for Rhule to imitate a lot of it, it works for their program. I think Erntz needs to stairstep himself into a Power 5 program. Not sure he could rebound from a NW flop. Not only that, but he walks on water right now, not sure he wants to give that up.

Don’t know about the walking on water , I went to the NC game in Frisco, buddy is a SDSU alumni, talked to some NDSU people they said Klieman took the best Ass coaches with him, they lost their DC to NW ( new interim coach) . They said recruiting had really dropped off . Be interesting to watch them the next years.

OT...He went into that game with his best players sidelined and really felt bad for him.

I am surprised he is doing as well as he is there. I agree with the best assistants leaving, but to keep the machine rolling is impressive. NDSU likes to develop their players and stay out of the transfers portal so I think that will help. The next 2 years will tell all. I wouldn't even know where to begin in recruiting to FCS level, you have to take the best of the rest and hope to find a diamond or two in the process, and then have to steal some or from the FBS level and keep them when they prove themselves to the larger schools. No thanks, coaching is not for me.

People seem to be high on Cole Payton out of Omaha. If they hit on him they could stretch out the run another 3 or 4 years...

Getting a lineman drafted on the first day just gives them even more of an advantage over other FCS schools when it comes to recruiting. Like they needed it.
