Any word on who it might be? I saw there was a story but it was premium so was curious if anyone could share some info?

A former B1G assistant coach. Haven't seen any info on it except for the premium site... only one reporting it so far.

Googling him brings up nothing Nebraska, but "he's a proven recruiter who brings an "infectious energy" and a winning pedigree."

Only smoke so far.

Leaving Florida for the sinking Tim Miles ship would be one of the worst career decisions I've ever seen.

Yeah he should only make decision based on what you think is smart...

You think it's a smart career decision to leave a program that plays in the NCAA Tournament almost every year, to go to the worst program in major college basketball with a coach who will probably get fired after next season?

The only way this makes sense is if Florida is going to get hit with NCAA violations or something.

I had read on Twitter that there was something that happened with Gates and Florida. The @CoachingChanges twitter handle said that they were trying to get to the bottom of what happened but haven't confirmed anything yet. They "heard a story that is hard to believe" then later said "To clarify, we heard something happened with Gates, we have not confirmed that, we are trying to do that currently." That was 13 hours ago.

Well for starters I do not know what is best for him, because I am not him...

  1. Life as an assistant coach is not the same as a 8-5 job at Union Pacific. Hell it isn't even the same as being a head coach! Just because Tim Miles is possibly going to be let go on a bad season should not have a huge impact on an assistant coach. Also if Mike Smith a Florida progresses or declines it does not impact what Gates would do. Who's to say Mike Smith doesn't leave next year?
  2. He is a Chicago guy, and that means he is probably more a Big 10 guy.
  3. By your comments you are assuming Miles is going to fail. While if he succeeds it could look real good on Gates resume.
  4. Also as an Assistant you aren't looking to stay in that assistant role forever. That leads to multiple options and who is going to pay you more!
I could go on and on about scenario's where it is not a stupid decision, but I would just be wasting my time. All you need to focus on is that you don't know what the best decision is for him!

Edit: Also if you do a google search of Armon Gates in the last 24 hours the first link is to a Florida Message board. Although in is a pay to view board the google link provides enough to know what the thread is about

Head coach in waiting?

There a lot of reasons someone leaves to take a new job, maybe it's money, better benefits, closer to family, promotion, different experience, just because Miles likely won't be around after next year doesn't mean it's a bad move on his part. None of us know this guy or what he wants out of his career.

4 different Husker basketball media types just started following him on twitter, so that's a pretty good sign he's coming here.

Or maybe, those media types read the message boards.

Interesting tweet here if he is leaving:

Do we know when an official announcement will come for the new assistant? It sounds like we are going to get Gates from the article above. I just hope he sticks around and doesn't leave after 1 year like every other assistant we have hired under Miles. Would be nice to have some stability there? But I also get it, if he's a hot name and is offered a Head coaching job he will leave.

Anyone know that rumor is with Gates at Florida? Haven't seen anything besides people speaking of this so called rumor.

considering the timing of our need, the debacle of how Florida handled this might end up being a blessing for us.

Yeah just a wild guess on my part, but if offered a couple of months ago I doubt Gates would have left Northwestern to come to Lincoln. So his brief pit stop in Florida seems to have worked out well for NU.

Loyola's head coach when asked on 590 today said, "he's a rockstar". Dynamic high energy assistant etc. Supposedly he's a great recruiter and his ties to Chicago area talent could be a good deal for NU. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Who knows, maybe this is the piece NU needed. I know everybody was hot for Kenya but prior to this past season there were some questions about what he added as an assistant other than his recruiting skills.

Man... and here we sit! Crazy huh! Man I thought Miles could not pull any type of coaching talent with Moos decision to only extend his contract one year. Oh wait that is just posters on this site that like to create false narratives. Crazy how I get those two mixed up from time to time

He is arguably just as good a recruiter as Hunter and definitely has the reputation as a better coach. We will have to see how that translates at Nebraska, but I am very excited about this hire.
