Im not exactly sure where I was wrong considering your post says just about the same thing as mine. But ok!
I didn't say they would be undefeated, just that the NU record would be better. Maybe only slightly better, but better.
Anyone who seriously watches NU BB games, and B1G in particular, likely has a similar observation. It is readily apparent that NU has no cache/history in MBB and they don't have the same consistency of the calls as the teams that do.
Yes it is and winning quite a lot throughout the year would be the only reason for that seeding. Hypothetical here... but to ignore that regular season success and can someone based off one game is not something Nebraska basketball is in any position to be doing and I would say no program should do that even though it certainly does happen.
It's ironic how Fred's philosophy changed only when Trev restructured Fred's contract and got involved, all for the better. Old school basketball with great defense, shooting the higher percentage shot on offense, and making your free throws will win you alot of games. Too many teams live and die by the 3, and we used to die by it all the time.
We have never done it before, not with any of our coaches in the history of Nebraska basketball. Ever.
And if Fred doesn’t do it THIS YEAR, he should be fired. Ridiculous.
Every piece of historical evidence suggests that we cannot.
Osborne was very successful even with the drought against OK and losing big in bowl games to the Florida States of the world. I think a lot of fans, like myself, were pissed off and frustrated at that time, but never did it cross my mind that he should be fired. Hell, TO was pissed off too (but you’d never see it) and he did something about it. NC’s soon followed….
I think you missed the point. We have a poster on this board saying Fred should be fired if he wins enough to get a 5 seed in the tournament but loses in the first round. Just as it would have been ridiculous to Fire Osborne at the end of 1977, it would also be ridiculous to fire Hoiberg after this season should he win enough games to merit a 5 seed in the Tourney.
It was good that the AD gave him some metrics and reduced his salary for a short time, but I give Fred all the credit in the world for changing his style. The fact is that Trev had his hands full with football and really didn't want to fire Fred anyway. Fred figured out on his own that major changes were needed and was smart enough to start over.
Because someone has not had the4 balls to step up and go get what we need to win consistently.

Joke all you want. We just accept losing in Basketball. Yes, we are getting better, and I hope Fred takes us to the final 4 this year. Then we don't have to go through the whole process again.
But just accepting what Nebraska BB has been for years as an excuse for not wanting better is just stupid.
Many schools with 1% of the facilities and way less assets can do it Nebraska has no excuses.
I think you’re missing something here… 23 wins and a number five seed shows progress. If you continue to let him do his job, each year better than the one before, it’s only a matter of time before he does win a tournament came. Firing him after this season Has the potential to torpedo this team. Could we find someone better? Maybe so. There is no guarantee… He is showing that he is turning this around. Give him the opportunity to continue to improve the product on the court. Don’t fire him for going to the tournament and getting a number five seed but losing…
Do you not follow NU football? It can always be worse. It's all a calculated risk and I would have to see the program trending down, not up, before I would ever entertain getting rid of Hoiberg.
Come on man, his first 3 seasons were terrible. A late season surge in year 3 got them to 10 wins after only seven in year one and year two. Name me one other program in the power conferences that would have tolerated that in addition to Nebraska. You want to be on here acting like it would’ve been barbaric to fire a coach with that record?
It was against logic to have retained him, adjusted contract and all. I’m happy it’s worked out very well but it was unlikely to happen. I think Alberts even stated something along those lines in regards to keeping him, that a turn around was probably not going to happen. But it has. And for people to jump in here now and say it would have been crazy to fire Fred after year 3 are flat out lying.
I think it was probably Collier and Sadler that Husker nation were tired of. They could coach decent team defense but didn't recruit well enough for their teams to score reasonable amounts of points. Nee would never have been accused of coaching much defense. But he recruited quite well.

Doc was underrated. Not saying he was a long term solution.
Fred is of course better.
I must have read it too fast and thought you said it took him time to implement his plan and system, instead of altering his system.
Another hypothetical… let’s say Nebraska were to win the B1G but lose first round in the Dance… still want him gone?
We are below average. We are the worst mens athletics program in NCAA history.
We are lucky to be doing this well.
In no way should we waste money on basketball by buying out a coach.

You would fire a coach getting a 5 seed at the most historically bad sports program in ncaa history. I think Ill just stop debating with you as its not rational.
In Cip’s days you couldn’t touch your guy on D or they called a foul. Huge difference.
And one of the reasons Doc couldn’t attract better talent was his style of play. It was awful.

We fired Tim Miles, took team to first NCAA tourney since Coach Nee. Yet not keeping a coach a coach with 7, 7, and 10 wins in first 3 years would be moronic? After year 3 it appeared moronic to have brought Hoiberg here.
I’ve followed Husker basketball since the days of LeRoy Chalk. Used to go to games at the old Coliseum with my dad. Fred IMO is by far the best overall coach we’ve had. Nee was maybe the best recruiter (or was it his wife). Nee was likely bending some recruiting rules but he used his ties to AAU ball to the max. Fred’s a much better teacher IMO. We need to win a game or two in the tourney and his program will take off.
Winning in a power conference is very hard. I like Fred. I like the way he treats his players and the way he conducts his business. He’s a tremendous fit for Nebraska. I don’t believe we can do better. IF we want to field better teams, our fanbase has to give more money to NIL.
Some of Fred’s early struggles were due to the roster mess that Miles’ feud with our AD caused. It completely destroyed his last class at a time we were trying to build a roster via high schoolers and a couple of transfers. At that time transfers had to sit out a year.
Fred started in a deep hole. The new transfer rules are helping the roster situation but if we want to win tourney games, we need to fund NIL way better.
Tim was 116 - 114 in 7 seasons. Not exactly amazing. I wasn't on board with dumping him either.
Fred was 62-83 through his first 4 seasons, but ended with a visit to the dance and a Big 10 co-coach of the year last year. But many of you would have neutered him after year 3 and once again started anew with expectations that somehow a miracle worker was going to step into the position.
No one is arguing that it was a rough start to Fred's tenure. What I'm arguing is that cutting bait after 3 seasons coaching at the doormat of the Big 10 conference is not only irresponsible but moronic. If we were playing in the MAC or some other lower level conference maybe... But not in the BIG 10.

we were 14 months removed from our deepest conf tourney run, an NCAA tourney bid and Miles winning B1G Coach of the Year.
either way, I'm obviously pleased with Hoiberg's turnaround despite loudly wanting him fired after year 3, and excited to watch this team battle all winter long.
we have the inside track to another bid this year thanks to the idiotic way college hoops scheduling works (strength of conference is set in stone by Christmas) and our non-con which didn't include any crippling losses for the first time in a very long time.
hold serve at home, steal a couple on the road, win a game in the B1G tourney and we'll be a 7 seed.
I think you and Cav are discussing different things. Miles’ record overall wasn’t great BUT a large part of his struggles those last two years was the AD’s failure to support him. That last year he either needed to support him with an extension or fire him a year earlier. It was clear to recruits that Tim didn’t have the support of the AD and his assistants were job shopping long before he was fired.
So given the situation, Tim was in a bad spot and in turn it made Fred’s first two years at least more difficult. Had Tim reached his ceiling his tourney year? Probably. Has Fred reached his ceiling? I don’t believe so. Fred is widely respected in basketball circles. I think we need to ride with him as long as we can.
Based your "history" statement we should have never lost more than 9 games in football. I mean look at the history!
It doesn't mean squat. It's a giant excuse fans use to justify what we have seen forever. Including every year Fred has been here except last year to a point and this year so far. Only winning conference games at home is also not acceptable. If you want to get a 5 seed, you have to win road games that matter. So far, we have not. If we get in as usually on the last bubble teams and lose we have not progressed whatsoever.
Go fix it. Grow a pair, open the checkbook as wide as it gets and get a coach who will attract top level talent. If Fred gets us a 5 seed and wins a game, then I would give him another year. If not, he has had plenty of time.
