I plan on traveling to the Miami game on September 19th & I am trying to plan for the weekend. Since I have a work schedule that requires significant advanced planning, I have been thinking of a few things such as when kickoff will be & if the Dolphins will get scheduled for a home game on the 20th. Below are some items I researched to make predictions, plus I have questions others might be able to provide insight on. Also, I figure this is a fun off season football topic; so please feel free to read & respond to this way too long post questioning if the NFL will schedule a Dolphin home game on Sept. 20th & how it will impact the team & fans.
Will Nebraska vs Miami be a night game? Which kickoff time is more advantageous for the Huskers?
The Huskers play the Hurricanes on Sept. 19th in Sun Life Stadium. I would like the Husker game to be a night game because I enjoy the atmosphere of night games. Also, night games seem to get more national attention than early morning games. Is a night game better for Nebraska or the Hurricanes for recruiting? From a crowd perspective, is it more advantageous for Miami if it is a night game, or will lack of Miami fan support make that a non-factor? I am in the category that night games usually give the home team the advantage.
Will the NFL schedule a Miami Dolphins home game on Sept. 20th?
I really want to get the most value out of my travel budget & would purchase tickets to the Dolphins game if they are scheduled to play at home. since the Hurricanes & Dolphins share a stadium, I wasn't sure if that was even possible. I looked back at last years schedule & saw three games where the Hurricanes & Dolphins played at Sun Life on the same weekend, so the chance exists for this to happen. However, I did notice that all three of the games played on the same weekend were games where kickoff for the Hurricanes games was at 12pm EST. This makes me think that if Dolphins are scheduled to play at home, Nebraska/Miami ends up being a 12pm EST/11am CST GAME. If the Dolphins are away, we get a night match up. The NFL schedule is released on Wednesday, so I think people will have a good idea of the night game vs day game based on this factor. Please note, I only looked at last year's schedule, so I could be wrong on this prediction.
Why is it good for the Dolphins to play a home game on the 20th?
In my opinion, it would be great for Sun Life Stadium as well as Husker fans if the Dolphins are scheduled at home on the 20th. I am sure it would increase ticket sales to the Husker/Hurricanes game since more Husker football fans would travel, & like me would want to get the biggest bang for their buck. It is well documented the Hurricanes average 40,000+ unsold tickets to home games, while the Dolphins average 15,000 unsold tickets for home games. Husker Nation travels well enough to easily gobble up 20k tickets & with two games in one weekend that number is very realistic, even for a non-bowl game. Add to the fact this is Miami & both games will likely be sell outs with high ticket demand. Factor in that the Dolphins new superstar just happens to be a Husker Legend which adds another level of demand for tickets to the Dolphins game. Husker fans who want the opportunity to see Ndamukong Suh play in person again will make a point to buy Dolphins tickets... As will anyone who has an interest in the away team.
Recruiting Conversation:
This game also could potentially impact recruiting in a positive way for the long term. Having Suh on the Husker sideline for this game would be a major recruiting bonus. Then think if LaVonte David makes the trip down. Having two high profile Pro Bowl players such as Suh and LaVonte David on the Husker sidelines is a huge recruiting tool. Not many teams have the ability to have two active pro bowl players on the sideline of a game, this makes for good publicity during the entire game on ESPN or whatever channel the game is on. It never hurts to have pro bowlers on the Husker sidelines decked out in Husker gear on prime time.
The Long Term Suh and David Factor in Miami?
It is no secret that Miami high schools send a lot of kids to D1 & now these kids will have two high profile Husker veterans to look up to in their hometown for the next 5-6 years. Although LaVonte plays for TB, he was born and raised in Miami. He committed to Miami out of high school & they didn't want him out of JUCO. Our coaching staff has two prime examples of how Miami kids can leave the beach & reach the highest goals playing in Nebraska. I also expect Suh to be setting up a foundation & a kids football camps in Miami like he did in Detroit & Portland. In these camps, he regularly utilized other Husker veterans as coaches & speakers, including LaVonte David.
Will Suh be on the sideline?
I wonder if Suh's agent would even consider letting Suh stand on the Husker sideline considering the Miami/Nebraska history. Do Dolphin fans even care about a college rivalry? Clearly, the Dolphin fans do not attend the Hurricane games. Also, does anyone know if Suh is unhappy with the coaching changes? He still has a lot of love for Husker fans on Twitter and Facebook & probably interacts with Husker fans more than NFL fans, at least he does on social media. I personally have not heard of him interacting with the new coaching staff at all, but figure others might know.
My Predictions:
Expect a 12pm EST/11am CST kickoff for this game with Suh, David, & Hardrick on the sideline representing Nebraska as NFL stars in Florida. Expect Husker fans to bring back the SUUUUUUH chant during Dolphin's games.
