This will be an unpopular opinion but the turning point of the entire game was when Rahmir Johnson dropped that wide open pass that was PERFECTLY thrown to him. I mean there was nobody - and I mean NOBODY - around him.
And the dude dropped it.
Five minutes later it was 20-9 Illinois and that was that.
Seriously, NU was up 9-6 and had total and complete control of the ballgame. They had all the momentum and Illinois was on its heels. Johnson dropped that perfect pass and immediately put NU off schedule. What could have been a huge gainer was instead 2nd and 10. They try to get some of the yardage back with a Grant run and he’s promptly tackled for a loss. Now it’s 3rd and 11 or whatever. And that’s when the floor falls out. NU’s paper mache Oline pretty much lets the entire Illinois Dline right through to Thompson who literally disappeared from sight. I couldn’t even see the kid. All I saw was a bunch of white jerseys and orange helmets. It was like there was no offensive line at all. Like imagine a 7 on 7 drill except the other team was playing with 11 guys. That was this play.
So Thompson gets hit just as he releases and (not) shockingly gets hurt. Illinois intercepts it and that…was…that. Ballgame.
All leading back to the Rahmir Johnson drop.
Now I know coaches and players like to say you win and lose as a team. And that’s true for the most part but football is a game of momentum. And NU continues to be its own worst enemy. All teams make mistakes but NU isn’t good enough to overcome them.
That Johnson drop was so emblematic of Nebraska football of the last 20 years. Snatching defeat out of the jaws of victory. They really and truly cannot get out of their own way. And you know what the answer to that is? Good coaching.
A good coach emphasizes the mental aspect of the game, which is where 90% of football is actually played. Between the ears. And NU hasn’t had a coach that focused on that since TO.
Talent is a big part of that, yes. But it’s things Like discipline and fortitude that make a difference. Not having dumb penalties. Blown assignments. Missed tackles. Dropped passes. Those are mental errors. It’s what separates the okay teams from the truly good teams. And NU consistently finds ways to shoot themselves in the foot, and they’ve been doing that since 2002.
I’m a huge fan of MJ, but it might be best to clean house. They need a whole new perspective on the sideline.
