Nebraska Football & National Championship Game

Well, the Huskers had their first MNC in 1970 & 1971. I was too young to remember those games. There was lots of talk about them and how Osborne could never win the big game or against the Florida speed. Then the 90's happened. It took NU 23 years to get our next MNC. We also can't forget that the game has changed. TO most certainly would have evolved his offense to run a more spread attack that we see popular today.
Agree to disagree on that last part.

Unbelievable. How impressive was Clemson's oline and just overall blitz pick-up? Unreal talent on the field tonight.

'There's emotion on your face, why?'

Really interviewer guy? That's the question you ask a QB that just won the National Championship?

Probably because he was working n an incredible game to win the National Championship.

How does a guy get to that position and not have a better question lined up?

Next season we'll know how close to a championship we are, if there aren't substantial improvements by a coaches 3rd year then it's on to the next one

I've seen all I need to. Next year will not be as good of a record as this past year so I'm just twiddling my thumbs until the end of 2018 when we can get rid of this mess and hopefully make a good hire.

Given the talent on our current roster ... I would say we are 5 to 6 years from that. Assuming our recruiting improves, which I think it will
Why do you think recruiting will improve? This is not an inexperienced staff. I don't see any improvement unless Riley fires some people.

It will improve because this staff is good. The issue with our recruiting has to do with our lack of success in big games in my view. I think we turn the corner next year with a much better team.
We were very close this year to an outstanding recruiting class. And it may yet end on a good note.
Look, I think we all need to understand something here. Despite all of the great and attractive things about NU football, the fact is, given our 17 year run of total mediocrity, it is becoming harder and harder to attract elite talent to Lincoln. Not impossible at all and we have some great recruits coming in this year. But very hard. Furthermore, despite what some think, it would be really hard to attract a big "splash hire" type coach here since that kind of coach wants to go somewhere where there is a large talent pool nearby.
So what we are left with is EXACTLY what Eichorst did to his credit. You go out and hire a really, really good coach who can rebuild a program over the long haul. And by long haul I mean around five or six years. We needed to rebuild our roster from the ground up. And that takes time.
And let's stop bad mouthing this year's recruiting class before it is even over. There are some excellent athletes coming into our program next year and there are probably more on the way in these last two weeks.
Things are not "dire" in Lincoln. We won 9 games this year which is not great but it certainly isn't a catastrophe either.
In my opinion we are on our way to a much more solid and competitive program

New coaches usually get a recruiting bump. I think we've had ours. This was my concern with how Mike handled things when he came here, he's basically put his system on hold for 2 years. We sort of got a decent recruiting bump, and now 2 years later, it's the start of the real Mike Riley era.. only now, you've not done very well in the interim, wasted 2 years trying to make everyone happy, and missed out on all the positive goodwill. I've always thought Mike should have made the transition much faster. Maybe that wasn't possible, but I do feel like we are sitting in no man's land now. He's got to be able to produce with the talent he has next year. It's crucial.

He put his system on hold because he did not have a QB who could run it. Who do you think he should have started over TA? In year one it was either TA or Fyfe or Bush. Yikes. In year two it was TA or a very raw POB or Fyfe. Yikes. I suppose you could make the argument that he should have started POB this Fall no matter what so that he could install "his" offense. But then you run the risk of another 5-7 season (or worse) and of destroying the psyche of your young QB as all of the asshole fans on the fringe lunatic wing come out of the woodwork to twitter storm the poor 18 year old into hell.

I have no idea what you think Riley's realistic options were....

I said maybe it wasn't possible for Riley to transition faster than he did. But, if he was committed to it, I do think he could have gotten some JC guys in his first year or at least made a bigger push to run his own system vs running a 2 year experiment. It is what it is. A different coach might have had a more immediate mindset. Some of you have to come to grips that Mike owns where we are now starting year 3.
