Two Huskers Advance to Big Ten Semifinals

Bloomington, Ind. – Seniors Tim Lambert (125) and Aaron Studebaker (197) each advanced to the semifinals of the Big Ten Championships at Assembly Hall on Saturday.

As a team, Nebraska is in eighth place with 26 points. Penn State (70 points) leads the team race, while Ohio State (68) and Iowa (55.5) round out the top three.

Lambert, the No. 3 seed at 125 pounds, received a bye in the first round before defeating sixth-seeded Johnny Jimenez (Wisconsin), 6-3. Lambert improves to 27-5 this season, and will face No. 7 seed Elijah Oliver (Indiana) in Saturday night’s semifinals.

Studebaker, the No. 3 seed at 197 pounds, won a pair of decisions to punch his ticket to the semifinals. Studebaker downed Maryland’s David-Brian Whisler in the first round, 7-2, before topping No. 6 seed Jacob Berkowitz (Northwestern), 10-4. Studebaker, who improves to 26-6 this season, faces No. 2 seed Kollin Moore (Ohio State) in Session II.

Seven Huskers enter Session II in the consolation bracket, five of whom lost in the quarterfinals. All-American Eric Montoya, the No. 2 seed at 133 pounds, received a first-round bye before falling to No. 7 seed Mitch McKee (Minnesota), 11-3.

No. 4 seed Colton McCrystal (141) split his matches in Session I, opening with a 16-3 major decision over Maryland’s Ryan Diehl. McCrystal lost to fifth-seeded Luke Pletcher (Ohio State) in the quarterfinals.

Tyler Berger (157), Dustin Williams (165) and two-time All-American TJ Dudley (184) also each went 1-1 in the first session of the tournament. Berger opened with a technical fall, but fell in sudden victory-1 against sixth-seeded Brian Murphy (Michigan), 3-1. Williams earned his second consecutive pin when he defeated Maryland’s Patrick Gerish in 4:48. Williams lost to No. 2 seed Logan Massa (Michigan) by technical fall in the quarterfinals.

Dudley, the No. 5 seed at 184 pounds, opened his tournament with a 13-4 major decision over Michigan’s Ernest Battaglia. In the quarterfinals, Dudley suffered his third loss of the season, a 12-7 setback to fourth-seeded Myles Martin (Ohio State).

Micah Barnes (174) and Collin Jensen (HWT) each lost their opening bout, but remain in the consolation bracket. Barnes received a bye in the consolation first round, while Jensen topped Purdue’s Tyler Kral, 4-0. Collin Purinton (149) lost a pair of decisions to be eliminated.
