Six Huskers Win in Session I of NCAA Championships
St. Louis, Mo. – Nebraska won six of seven matches during Session I of the NCAA Championships at the Scottrade Center on Thursday afternoon.
The Huskers are in 10th place as a team with 9.5 points. Penn State leads the team race with 16 points, while Oklahoma State (15) and Ohio State (14) round out the top three.
After the Huskers opened with four decisions, seniors TJ Dudley (No. 7 seed at 184) and Aaron Studebaker (No. 7 seed at 197) provided a spark with bonus points in each of their matches. Dudley, a two-time All-American and 2016 NCAA runner-up, won a 17-0 technical fall over Rider’s Michale Fagg-Daves in 3:49. The win marked Dudley’s team-leading 11th technical fall of the season, as 22 of his 28 wins in 2016-17 are by bonus points.
Studebaker, a three-time NCAA qualifier, pinned Princeton’s Brett Harner in 4:52. The fall marked Studebaker’s fourth of the season, as he improves to 28-8. Studebaker has made the Round of 12 at the NCAA Championships in each of the last two seasons.
No. 5 seed Tim Lambert (125) opened Nebraska’s tournament with a 9-2 decision over Brock Hudkins (Northern Illinois). Lambert, making his fourth NCAA appearance, is 29-6 this season following the first-round victory.
Reigning All-American Eric Montoya, the No. 7 seed at 133 pounds, notched a 6-1 decision over Cornell’s Mark Grey in the first round. Seeded Huskers Colton McCrystal (141) and Tyler Berger (157) also posted first-round decisions. McCrystal, the No. 9 seed at 141 pounds, opened his first NCAA showing with a 6-1 triumph over Ohio’s Noah Forrider.
Berger, the No. 4 seed at 157 pounds, defeated Garder-Webb’s Ryan Mosley, 9-2. Berger is making his second NCAA Championships appearance after advancing to the Round of 12 as a redshirt freshman last season.
The six Huskers who won in Session I will compete in the second round tonight. No. 13 seed Collin Jensen (HWT), who fell to NC State’s Mike Kosoy by a 5-2 decision, will compete in the consolation bracket tonight.
Session II begins tonight at 6 p.m. (CT), and will be televised on ESPN and streamed live on ESPN3.
