Nate Gerry WTH?

Why is that? Gerry himself said that he liked the fact that the new defense relied more on instinct. From instinct comes the need to make good decisions as well.

Our problem isn't coaching, instinct, decision making or any other contrived reason. Gerry is just one of a group of juniors that don't want to play for Riley or Nebraska. They didn't like the fact Bo got canned and it's DIRECTLY HAVING AN EFFECT ON THEIR PLAY. Gerry looks to be taking the firing the worst of all.

You do realize that when Bo used his "Us against the World" mentality was to isolate the players from any but him??? If you didn't tow the Bo line you were the enemy. Now how is any player supposed to take any instruction from Riley or his staff??? Every instinct to obey was drilled into their heads for years no matter what flowery words come out their mouths. Do you yet get this simple fact??????

Until Gerry just come out and tackles one of our players to spring a Michigan State player for a touchdown. And pulls up his jersey on the sidelines to show a Youngstown State shirt.

I made it a point to watch Gerry during the second half. He looked like he really was not into the game at all. Wasn't running full speed, slow on run support, taking bad angles, giving up on plays..... I was disgusted. He showed no heart yesterday.

What other players besides Gerry are mailing it in right now? I am questioning McMuffen and Collins after watching some of their effort. Did Bo really get into their heads that much? Just like an abused wife defends her husband some of these players just do not get it.

Gangwish, Janovic, Westerkamp, Morgan......are giving max effort and then we have a group of players who seem to not care anymore. And the worst part is some of them are captains.

I really doubt Gerry sees the field next year in this scheme. Is a square per in a round hole when it comes to coverage skills in a C4 defense. He is at his best playing deep center field in a C2 look. Am sure he is a great kid but not a fit for Banker's scheme.

And then I'm sure this staff would still start him! You realize right that Riley and Banker have the power to start whomever they please right? If what you say is true and Riley continues to start Gerry it's just more egg on Rileys face.

But that scenario isn't gonna happen. This problem resides in the back of the player's heads far down and to the left. I still contend Gerry honestly thinks he's giving 110%. And it is on Riley to ultimately understand that you have to make the tough decision here.

The problem is this guys. IT'S PROBABLY WORSE THEN YOU THINK. If Riley does sit Alex, Gerry or whoever else he might deem necessary he'll lose all of them. Every player that is sitting on the fence will turn and we'll have a full on mutiny for the whole world to see. I surmise he's try get this to the off season without an explosion. The only problem is there are outside forces hell bent on causing an explosion right before our eyes. And a lot of them have direct access to the players in question. Riley needs to cut out the cancer now and be very public about it. That's the only way he can save it now.

Damn coaching...Riley needs to go!

(Did i do it right???)
Can you post the Purdue qb touchdown run where we had a defensive back running in the opposite direction from the qb. I thought that was worse than this 2 players bumping into each other.

It's not that unusual for man coverage. The db keeps his eyes on the receiver. The alternative is to get "caught looking in the backfield" and to lose you man. Granted, normally you hear "Run!!" if the QB scrambles (or draw) to get the dbs looking up.

As far as Gerry's play, it looks like he is looking back towards the line of scrimmage and doesn't see the wr/Davie until he is almost into them. So it's almost like he is looking at an underneath route or "caught looking in the backfield," but then it's obvious he believes he is suppose to take the deep route, so I'm not sure why he would be looking at an underneath route. A lot of confusion. A lot of bad technique. And lousy peripheral vision.

Pretty strong words (not that I necessarily disagree). I'm assuming you're saying this not necessarily because of his play, but because of his attitude?

Yes, and he's not the only one that needs to rot on the sidelines....

A current player told me Gerry was going to transfer to Texas A&M after Bo got fired but someone talked him out of it. Too bad. He is clearly still butt hurt about losing his buddy. I will never criticize a player for trying or hustling, but his attitude and play make it apparent he should not be seeing the field. Hope he transfers. And I would have never guessed in a million years I would be typing this after watching his first two years here.

Any chance you have anymore info on other coaches contacting our current players after the firing?

What would be particularly sad about the Gerry situation, is that the new staff, in particular Philip, noted that Gerry could be a first rounder given enough time to work with him physically.

Kid still might make the NFL, but he might be throwing away a good chunk of money by throwing a fit over a staff that singled him out for stardom.

I didn't rewind any of it, but I thought he looked dinged up.

@dinglefritz Probably dinged up on this one last year, too. He probably just needs to adjust his shoulder pads first instead of after every play, and he would make these kinds of tackles.

Gerry has been dinged up and the video RRover has posted clearly shows Gerry looking back at the QB. Sh## happens and there is no way in hell he is doing anything but playing as hard as he can. Just quit the conspiracy crap about Gerry. The kid is a warrior.

he would have laid the wood had he been in red pants

No question! We need to get rid of this new fad of all whites and get back to our roots at DONU.

After all, players like TMart liked playing against away games when they got to wear scarlet pants during his championship runs; we all need to have this frame of mind.

That WAS a crappy attempt to cause a turnover but then we saw lots of tackling like that with Papuchis and Bo coaching our D now didn't we....

He wasn't throwing an elbow into the defender. He didn't see the defender because he was looking back for the ball or something and didn't see the defender until he was about to run into him. Then he just stuck out his arm. Actual problems were 1) why didn't he see the defender with the receiver, and 2) why did he have a bad angle on the receiver.

Sad that our talent is so low that Gerry hasn't been benched. A mannequin would be better out there.

Said before the season I thought he is over-rated, was heckled by many. Has never been good with angles or tackling.
