Nailed it

Better get kids that can execute these self proclaimed good plays they are calling.
When you preach improvement and process, you have to give them a chance to grow, even if it sucks in the short term. Going into a shell offensively might have helped us win another game or two, but could stunt player development. Call the plays you’ve seen them execute in practice. Live with the consequences.

Ehhhh,

I guess I would be hard pressed to see how running the ball there and maybe scoring a TD or kicking a FG would have stunted growth.

I would actually argue that what they did end up doing could piss off some of the team.

But it is over now and hopefully they just go beat Wisconsin.

Don’t be crying if they finish 5-7. I’m talking about getting players in that can do what the coaches want done. The square peg in round hole approach can only be short term. There isn’t time to waste to see if Haarberg or Purdy can improve enough in the next 2-3 seasons.

It would be interesting to see what people in coaching positions say about this. Of course everyone wants to win now. But I spent years working with my daughter to become what she is today in sports. These coaches have had a year to understand 130ish players and what they can do. As a high school/college coach, do you feel you can accurately know a player with a short time?

I think Satt is a mediocre at best OC, and terrible at worst. But, I can see Rhules point and why we won’t change. I can live with that after just one season, and terrible QBs.
That said, we’ll see what he does at the end of the 2024 season, if we still look terrible on offense.

It's exactly what you said. Going in to a shell to win a game stunts development? That's ridiculous.
Nowhere did I say losing helps development. But yes, going into a shell will stunt development. They need to learn how to perform and make plays to win. Taking that away through play calling doesn’t help that. The same way going to driving range doesn’t prepare Rory for the back 9 of the masters on a Sunday. They have to do it when it matters.

It seemed they were learning to win by driving down to get points in a tie game. A fg probably wins it there. You don't sacrifice a bowl to run a rep passing.

Practice is for reps. Game day is for winning. Everything said after is excuses.

Winning games, even if in a crappy way, is the best development method. Create a winning atmosphere.

not the way the Rhule has traditionally done it. 1st year is usually a throwaway to parlay for future years vs delay development of his system/culture. It is what it is.

You state the obvious , I'm sure he know's what he's is doing and the needs. He's built two programs , how many have you built ?

After action arm chair coordinator's have all the answers. What have you seen from these QB's in practice ? Are we so powerful up front that we can just pound the rock now ? What happens when we kick 3 and then get beat by a TD on Marylands next drive. We would back here today debating why we didn't try to win.

People would be complaining that he wasn't aggressive enough. They would also want Rhule to fire Satt and White.

Ummm no! Not in nut check time with a bowl riding on the outcome. We've had multiple stupid calls down inside the 5 yard line.

I don't think so. I think we have all seen enough from our QB's this season to know what's going to happen if we throw the ball inside the 10. We've also seen enough from our defense to know that they are good enough to close out games if needed. Id rather take my chances with that then do what we have been doing.

If we had a competent qb on the roster than I agree we should do what's needed to score. But we don't so it's all about mitigating mistakes.

I don't think so. Most of us know what will happen if we throw inside the 10.

We had 5 turnovers ......5 . We lost because of that, not one play call. What about the other 60 plays ? We lost by 3 points. Sim's turnover lead to a easy 3, which was the difference. The defense didn't stop them on the finale drive either.

Lol. This place would have been filled with posts calling Rhule pussy. You've been around long enough to know how it work here.

I'm not nearly as upset about the playcalling after Rhule spoke on it.

Exactly. I don't recall seeing one called running play that was designed for a running back to the outside. When your OL cant pull or move quickly enough the play calling options are extremely limited. The last play was open. Our coaches are putting players into the position to succeed as best as possible.

Do we want to win or have a good football team? The two are not the same thing. A good football team tends to win games, but you can win games without being very good. Beating Maryland by going into a shell doesn’t make us any better. Giving kids a chance to succeed and make plays does. If it were year 3 or 4, my take my be different. But right now, they’re trying to just teach the kids to go out and play without worrying so much about the result. It sucks as fans, but I really think that’s what Rhule is doing and he’s been successful doing it in the past.

Umm we want to win a winnable game. Winning builds confidence. Throwing a pick in the endzone to "Build Character" or whatever you're trying to say is a sure fire way to not build confidence. Good football teams win games that they are supposed to win by any means necessary.

Nebraska vs Wisconsin 2015

Nebraska takes over at their own 21, up 21-20 with 1:20 left in the game.

We run 3 straight plays, all direct handoffs up the middle, very conservative plays to chew up clock. We punt it back to Wisconsin at their 30 with 1:03 left. They gain 42 yards on 6 plays and kick the game winning FG to win the game 23-21.

We all know the Nebraska vs Texas ending with Bill Callahan & Terrance Nunn.

This Maryland game might fall somewhere in the middle of those other 2 examples, but my point is that you can go either way (go conservative or not) and you lose either way. Then fans are upset as to why we didn't do the opposite of what we did.

We have a good defense now compared to then. That's the major difference

When push comes to shove I'm going to side with the coaches that have built programs and see these player's everyday. I'm also not going to make snap judgements on how they go about building their program....that will come next year ;]

Of course you want to win. They weren’t trying to lose. But you protecting the kids to prevent mistakes will never allow for growth and this team was never going to be good enough to get where we want. So you put them in positions to make plays and succeed, but you don’t protect them from making mistakes. Like Rhule said “how are we going to build a championship team if we’re always worried about making a mistake?”

I agree. It just stunts growth and the first year is a throwaway for all intents and purposes for wins/losses but much more important for laying the groundwork for the better years.
