Maybe its awkward to put this out there since we do, in fact, have a coach. But....let's assume there is at least a realistic chance HCMR is not here in 2 months. My top 5 that I think we actually have a chance at:
1. Gary Patterson --> Love the style, and midwestern roots would fit here well. Proven to be a high level coach in all areas. His "fit" would be perfect.
2. Scott Frost --> Offensive identity would return with his style that is 1 part TO, 1 part Walsh, 3 parts Chip. Anyone who thinks Frost's ties to UNL should not be considered are ignorant. Part of being successful here is knowing what we are all about, and what it takes here. Frost knows all of that.
3. David Shaw --> It's really a matter of whether he leaves Stanford for the NFL or another big time CFB program first IMO. The money wagon would need to be rolled out but I think he's worth it and our hard core fan base would love the way his style translates here.
4. Kevin Sumlin --> Sumlin will be gone at A&M soon, and he is a really good coach. Not totally sure why A&M has not worked out well, but I know he can recruit and I know he can create an identity.
5. Jeff Brohm --> The guy is a future star. Let's let it be here. We can pay him way more than Purdue ever could and his alma mater is locked down by Petrino. He could find a home here for sure, and use the same players we have to be successful.
Honorable mention:
Jim Moorhead --> Incredible pedigree and young + big ten roots. Love his offensive style and ability to recruit.Greg Schiano --> Proven to be a solid college coach with the toughness you would want here at DONU. Would recruit defense talent like a demon. Not sure about his offensive style or identity.
Mark Dantonio --> Could be tired of limited resources and fan interest
Kyle Whittingham --> Ready for a jump to p5
Pat Fitzgerald --> At some point he as to imagine what is possible in a place with expectations
Rocky Long --> He's too old
Just some thoughts. Enjoy.
