MSU week PC Notes- Congrats to Q. Newsome

That muffed punt recovery was HUGE! Loved that he didn’t give up on the play and stayed engaged! He was a difference maker - though I wasn’t thrilled with the high fives 15 yards out and neither will Rhule be when he sees it.

I am frankly surprised that there was no flag on the play for unsportsmanlike conduct for the high five before going into the end zone. Some refs might interpret that as taunting. I remember during Osborne's tenure there was a punt or kickoff return for a TD against KSU by one of our guys who got flagged just because he started at about the ten yard line with some high stepping nonsense that earned him a penalty. The TD counted thank God, but it was still a penalty.

I agree. Risky

Coach Matt Rhule Michigan State Press Conference Notes -Lot of respect for Michigan State, really physical up front -Thought our OL played well, 2/3 sacks on Saturday were the fault of the QB -Omar Brown is in concussion protocol this week -Scrambles have really hurt us this year, one thing the D needs to work on -Need to tackle better -Thought the defense didn't play as well as the stats showed -"31-14 wasn't too ugly to me" -Coach Rhule went after the offensive staff last week -We're last in the nation in fumbles, and fumbles lost -On offense, we're still first in the B1G in rushing, and first in 10+ yard rushes -"When people say it's ugly, I say its tough" -We're a physical tough team, so is MSU - "this will be a battle" -Coach Rhule on HH - "He’s a little bit beat up. But he’s the quarterback at Nebraska." -Wind plays a big factor in offensive play, which is why the defense in the B1G seem very strong -Tempo in other areas of the country (Texas for example) is viable, in B1G it may not be so viable with the outside factors -Doesn't want to rush Marques Buford, he's in the mix but also off to the side -Not sure if Marques will play this weekend (probably wont IMO) -Very fired up for Quinton Newsome - "he's an NFL player" helping on special teams -Jeff Sims puts as much time in as anyone else, he was put in a tough scenario on Saturday -Chubba is back in form -"The fumbles are something that falls on me" -Emmett Johnson is very versatile -When talking about how Temple and Baylor is similar to this job, he mentions that Kyler Murray is the best player he's ever seen -Coach Rhule talks about the X-Factor when they run in the endzone (I noticed this wasn't sure what is was) -Christian McCaffery does this -We're further along than Temple and Baylor rebuilds -He yelled at Tommi and Quinton for high fiving, Coach's wife yelled at him for yelling at them -Coach hasn't slept much since the game (I thought he seemed tired) -Coach uses the rehab tools when he has downtime -We expect every game to come down to the wire -We knew NW was a good team, they battled us then went out and beat 5-2 Maryland -First two recruiting classes are so important in taking on a rebuild -Illinois week is when guys decided to block out the noise -Ed Foley does a phenomenal job in talking to guys 1 on 1 and developing young guys -Our punt returns have to improve, Coach Darlington called it a "disgrace", in a respectful way

Rhule has these kids dialed into next game, 1-0. These kids don't worry about getting starry eyed about the press clippings. The offense knows that it hasn't yet played a complete game, but what they've done is enough to be 5-3. The defense could be cocky, but have chosen to stay on assignment and protect the rep they are developing. This comes from honest coaching.

It's has to be refreshing for the players to have a really good idea of where they stand and aren't fed a bunch of false promises.

I watched a replay of the PC...a couple of things struck me. First, he said the defense did not play as well as he thought originally. I believe Rhule was essentially saying we got lucky on one INT that Purdue was throwing into the wind, otherwise we may have been beaten deep. He referred to another play that we ended up defending but may have been beaten had Purdue not been throwing deep into the wind.

He also said he was happy with the oline. Pointed out that Nebraska leads the Big Ten in rushing yards (which surprised the h*ll out of me); and said that is hard to do when everyone knows you are trying to run the ball. I believe Rhule also said we lead the league in yards per pass attempt.

He rambles on quite a bit, which is not a complaint - just an observation; but he is certainly more transparent and honest than I recall Frost being.

Frost and Bo both seemed to hate PCers

Riley seemed to love them. Almost to the point where the reporters basically had to stop asking questions because Riley would never leave.

Rhule has said a couple of times that the film doesn't lie. As for what is going on with the offensive side, Haarberg is in a phase where opponents have enough video to pick apart his tendencies in the run game. EJ continuing to develop his game will be helpful, but HH is going to have to throw more in order to loosen his run game up a bit. The circumstances of the games we've had have actually not been conducive to that. With weird turnovers at weird times, the weather, the run game doing enough to put points on the board and the D playing lights out, there really isn't a need to throw much, especially after halftime.

Mike Fullman, 1995. Same play that Mike Ruckers crackback block on a KSU defender sent the poor guys helmet about 15 feet above his head. Ah, the good old days
I recall an Osborne Tuesday night show where something similar to that happened, and reviewing the film Coach says, See that? The host replied affirmatively and Ozzie deadpans, Well take good look because you’ll never see it again.

We really gotta act like the high five is a big deal. Jesus Christ kids only know losing and we finally have a little success. I don’t think anyone in country is gonna take that as showing up Purdue

No fun allowed.
I HATE hotdogging but the high fives didn’t bother me. Clearly they weren’t taunting anybody or saying look at me. It was teammates celebrating a little together. I was waiting for a flag that thankfully didn’t come.

On that vein, am I the only one that notices there’s more team celebrations when plays are made and less individual chest thumping?

Wait 15 yards to get it across - people look stupid when they celebrate early …
