I know that speculation on coaches being fired really messes up recruiting. But we need to ask ourselves what is needed more now, focusing on training and coaching the 77 returning players up to a much higher level at the sacrifice of a few 2018 recruits, or do we kick the can down the road further on development in the hope of saving a few commits this cycle?
Riley and crew are not all of the sudden going to become great player developers, and if they stay, I guarantee you that we'll be having the same conversation next fall with our tougher schedule. We need to make a change this year, make a solid hire not on the cheap, have making a bowl a reasonable expectation for 2018, and work towards getting back in the mix by 2019.
