Montana

For years and years I have heard people talking about how amazing Montana and Wyoming are...and how they were going to move there.
Does their population grow at all?

There were definitely many beautiful parts to the Black Hills. We drove some highways that had so much scenery and animals it was like going on a safari. But we (2 couples from Texas) absolutely were blown away by the badlands.
We’ve got friends who do the sturgis deal, but we are lakes and Mr Rushmore and clear mountain streams and little warm puppies types. It was definitely a worth it trip.
Lighting ceremony at sunset at Mt Rushmore is the best thing in the Blackhills. There’s a great little restaurant now in Custer, Skogen Kitchen . Gotta have reservations. Sylvan Lake is very nice and there’s some nice trails from there. It isn’t the Tetons but it’s nice

MT has seen steady population growth, more so than WY. I think "move there" often ends up meaning buying a 2nd home there which skews the census counts relative to permanent residents. It also contributes to the inflation of real estate prices that makes it hard for the local residents and young people to afford to stay which creates hard feelings and outmigration due to affordability issues. Bozeman is about like Kearney in terms of population and key employers - college, hospital, schools, city, etc. But housing prices are double, or more.

Bozeman has I believe had a big influx of CA refugees.

I just got back from Santa Fe, NM. The mountains are absolutely beautiful and the temps are usually in the low 70's. My son says snow melts off quickly during the winter. If you like zero landscapes, it may be a nice place to live.

Very nice and expensive place to live.

Sylvan Lake area is cool. Did a three day hiking trip there with the FIL and two BIL's a few years back. Backpacking, tent sleeping, drinking water from the streams, etc. Hardly saw anyone. I've never done anything like that but it was pretty fun. Ended with a trek up to Harney Peak (think they change the name now). It was a cool experience and honestly kind of fvcking exhausting. We stopped in Custer on the way out and I'm pretty sure I chugged beer in the backseat all the way back to Nebraska!

Yeah. Total shitholes. That's why thousands upon thousands of people from Nebraska and surrounding states vacation or have cabins in MN.
I actually know people from Minnesota who live on a lake that have a cabin at Calamus. Always kinda thunk that was weird.

Yeah. I think my second cabin would be by Ely if I had the money. But I can't remember ever being to Calumus and I'm sure it's nice.

Just got back from a week there and it is indeed awesome. What parts are you visiting? It's a huge state.

Many people who love it during the summers can't handle the winters. They are brutal but if you are good with tough and long winters, it can be a great residential state. Another problem is that the real estate market is wildly inflated and short supplied in the most popular locales.
It seems that much of the US west, even less populated areas, are fairly high cost of living. Nice to visit, but living there is another matter.

That's right vacation genius.......
Drive around Minnesota right now and tell me how many Nebraska plates you see. Start in Otter Tail County and move north. You'll probably get tired of counting before you leave Fergus Falls. Sounds like a whole bunch of people that vacation in a total shithole.

But let me guess, you fall into one of 2 categories. Someone who bitches about MN and their politics but vacations there every year or someone who has never been.

I mean, I get people "hating" a place because of the politics but being on a lake, with friends and girls and drinks...that is fun, period.

Correct; there has been a big change in the past decade or so. Some of the more desirable areas are less populated but this does not make any less expensive. I am moving from the Black Hills to mountain Arizona or Montana soon, but man it's going to cost me.

Yeah they’re growing full of Cali and NY douchebags. Bunch of trust fund babies. It’s really unfortunate. They’re destroying it. Don’t mind tourists, they’re just the wrong type of tourists.

I tried to explain to life long Oakland CA resident how beautiful the Sandhills are…..as we were driving by shopping carts, cardboard boxes and trash ..,.,

Why would you do that? The last thing the Sandhills needs is a bunch of Californians

She’s never leaving the Oakland area. I was just attempting to modify her Left Coast ignorance just a little bit. We already have educated her daughter on how nice Nebraska is during COVID. A couple of months of open restaurants and stores with nice folks all around opened her eyes.
