LJS: NU's Burkamper stymies Loyola Marymount

Derek Burkamper dazzled Loyola Marymount batters for seven innings, and Blake Headley drove in three runs to lead Nebraska to a 5-1 victory Sunday in Los Angeles.

"I knew I had to have a good start and set things right, and with our offense getting those early runs, I felt pretty good," Burkamper, who gave up two hits, one run, walked one and struck out five, said by phone. "Loyola Marymount is very aggressive at the plate, so I was aggressive too.

"I had such a good feeling with the early runs and even better when I saw how our defense was all day," he said.

The Huskers (6-4) won the series after Saturday's 8-1 victory behind the three-hit, seven-inning pitching of Kyle Kubat.

Burkamper gave up a run in the second inning. In the fifth, he allowed a walk and a double with one out, but got the next two batters to fly out to right. Austin Darby snagged a fly ball by Ted Boeke and gunned down David Edwards.

"Guys on second and third and one out and I knew there'd be a play at the plate and Austin made this great throw and Tanner (Lubach) tagged him out and I couldn't have felt better," Burkamper said.

The sophomore right-hander got through the sixth and seventh innings in order, and relievers Jeff Chesnut and Colton Howell kept the Lions from scoring in the final two innings.

"Burkamper did a great job. A couple of times we scored, he had shutdown innings, keeping momentum," NU coach Darin Erstad said on his postgame radio show. "Derek has grown a lot as a person over the last year and a half and now he's starting to take care of business and starting to see it. You know he's taking care of business when he starts translating it on the field."

Burkamper said he made a mental change a year ago and decided "this is what I have to do to be a man, to help this team and get my head on my shoulders."

Headley, who has made a habit of getting key hits this season, singled in a run in the first and doubled in two more in the third.

NU scored twice in the first. Jake Schleppenbach singled, and advanced to third on Scott Schreiber's bobbled sacrifice bunt. Schleppenbach scored on a wild pitch, and Schreiber came home on Headley's single.

Steven Reveles doubled to open the third. Schleppenbach walked and Schreiber singled to load the bases. Ryan Boldt hit a sacrifice fly to score Reveles, and Headley doubled to plate two more runs.

Headley was 6-for-12 and drove in five runs in the three-game series. He has 13 RBIs and is hitting .351 for the season, with five doubles.

Nebraska, which posted 15 hits in Saturday's victory, improved its team batting average to .259 for the season, despite managing just six hits Sunday.

"We stayed positive (batting) and we knew the hits were coming," Erstad said. "We're doing a nice job of being ready to hit with runners in scoring position. Now we're starting to grind it out with nobody on. One thing we're doing real well right now is we're extending at-bats with two strikes. We're adding four pitches, five pitches in some of those at-bats. It's just huge and taxes a pitcher when you can do that.

"It is a nice all-around team effort so far. Our team grew a lot this weekend. We can grow from failure, we struggled the first day (a 4-1 NU loss) and we grew from success Saturday. We had to finish it off here."

Nebraska plays in the Houston College Classic against Texas A&M on Friday, then faces Hawaii and Louisiana State on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

NU: Huskers Win 5-1, Take Final Two Games at LMU

Los Angeles, Calif. - After dropping the series opener on Friday night, 4-1, the Nebraska baseball team (6-4, 0-0 Big Ten) bounced back with an 8-1 win on Saturday and a 5-1 win in Sunday's finale to take a road series from the Loyola Marymount Lions (7-4, 0-0 WCC).

Sophomore Derek Burkamper was dominant on the hill, going a career-high 7.0 innings in the win, the first of his Husker career. The Muscatine, Iowa, native was nearly untouchable in his third career start, allowing two hits and one walk, while striking out five. Burkamper retired the Lions in order five times on the afternoon, and after a giving up a leadoff double in the second he retired 18 of the final 20 Lion batters he faced.

After handing Trevor Megill a loss on Saturday, the Huskers dealt his younger brother, Tylor, a loss on Sunday. The younger Megill got off to a rocky start, allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits in the first three innings, but then settled in and retired the final 14 Huskers he faced.

The early runs were key for the Huskers, as Megill and reliever Michael Silva combined to not allow just one base runner over the final six innings. Nebraska's pitching staff was just as good, with Burkamper along with relievers Jeff Chesnut and Colton Howell combining to allow only three hits and one walk, while striking out seven.

The Husker offense got their young starter a 2-0 cushion in the first on a pair of hits and an LMU error. Jake Schleppenbach opened the game with a single and was quickly on third base after Megill committed a throwing error on a bunt by Scott Schreiber. With runners on the corners and Ryan Boldt up, Megill uncorked a wild pitch that scored Schleppenbach. Schreiber also came in to score in the inning on an RBI single by Blake Headley.

Burkamper retired the Lions in order in the first, but was touched for a run in the second after Tanner Donnels started the frame with a double. Burkamper nearly stranded Donnels at second, but a wild pitch allowed Donnels to score on a sacrifice fly.

The Huskers got the run back and then some in the third inning with three runs on three hits, including two doubles. Steven Reveles led off with a double and the bases were quickly loaded following a four-pitch walk to Schleppenbach and a bunt base hit by Schreiber. NU's No. 3 and 4 hitters then did their jobs, as Boldt delivered a sacrifice fly and Headley drove in a pair of runs with his third double of the series.

Working with a 5-1 lead, Burkamper retired the Lions in order in the third and fourth. After giving up the leadoff double in the second, Burkamper retired 10-straight Lions before David Edwards snapped the streak with a one-out walk in the fifth. Chris Barnett then doubled to put runners on second and third for the Lions. Burkamper's defense got him out of the jam though when Ted Boeke flew out to right field and Austin Darby threw a strike to Lubach at home that cut down Edwards for an inning-ending double play.

The game then turned into a pitching duel, with the two teams combining for just two hits over the final six innings.

The Huskers will be back on the road next weekend when they travel to Houston, Texas, for one of the premier tournaments in college baseball, the Houston College Classic. Hosted at Minute Maid Park, the home of the Houston Astros, the Huskers will play Texas A&M on Friday, Hawaii on Saturday and LSU on Sunday. Every game of the tournament will be carried on ROOT Sports Southwest.

LMU: Huskers Take Series with 5-1 Victory

The LMU baseball team (7-4) lost the rubber match of a three-game series with Nebraska on Sunday, falling 5-1 to the Huskers (6-4) at LMU's Page Stadium. The Lions managed just three total hits, including two from senior Chris Barnett.

Barnett, a native of Silverado, Calif., finished 2-for-3 with a double in the setback.

Right-hander Derek Burkamper was stellar as Nebraska's starter, registering five strikeouts and allowing just one run on two hits and a walk over seven innings. Burkamper improved to 1-0 with the victory. The Huskers used two relievers to seals the win, including Colton Howell to finish the game. Howell struck out two over the final inning.

Blake Headley completed a stellar three-game series on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Headley batted .500 with three doubles and five RBI in the three-game series.

Nebraska, which totaled eight runs on 15 hits on Saturday, picked up right where it left off on Sunday, plating a pair of runs in the top of the first and never looking back. Jake Schleppenbach led things off with a single before moving to third on an errant throw on a sacrifice bunt from Scott Schreiber. A wild pitch pushed the first run home while Headley blooped an RBI-single into centerfield to cap the scoring run.

After the Lions cut the deficit in half with a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly from David Edwards, the Huskers responded with three more runs in the third to run the tally to 5-1. Steven Reveles doubled to get the inning going before a walk and a bunt single loaded the bases with nobody out. Ryan Boldt delivered the first run with a sacrifice fly, which was followed by a two-RBI double from Headley to clear the bags.

A solid defensive play by right fielder Austin Darby thwarted a Lion rally in the fifth, as the senior caught a fly ball and fired a strike home to cut down Edwards who was trying to score on a sacrifice fly. A one-out walk and a double from Barnett put runners at second and third and had the momentum shifting toward the Lions, but Darby made sure Nebraska escaped unscathed with the strong throw.

Although he struggled early, freshman Tylor Megill settled in relatively nicely to finish the game with seven innings pitched, allowing the five runs (four earned) on six hits and one walk for LMU. The native of Huntington Beach, Calif. retired the final 14 hitters he faced, but the damage was already done, as he was ultimately tagged with the loss to fall to 2-1.

LMU will look to get back on track on Tuesday when it travels to Long Beach State for a game at 6 p.m.
