Despite playing about 3 cupcakes a year. Look I think the guy is classy and nice and all that but good gosh. He has nearly 40 years of coaching experience and yet that experience hasn't shown to be valuable at all. Every year there are more excuses...wait until 2018 or 2019 etc. but the reality is he is pretty much a .500 coach...that's who he is.
You can say Bo didn't recruit well and left roster spots empty (which he did), but at least Bo wouldn't have lost the BYU game, Illinois game which came down to just basic clock management.
My point is this, what can you point to, other than the fact we are all die hard Nebraska fans and pretty much all believe every year we are going to be better than we really are that Riley is actually making progress? I am talking in the W/L column not recruiting etc.
We should have beat Oregon. Yes, we have a new defense and a new D coordinator but don't they also?
Every year we make excuses, every single year...oh it's tommy he's not a real passer, oh bo didn't recruit well, oh we now finally have legit assistants etc. etc.
When are we going to start just calling it as it is...Riley is who he is. There is absolutely zero evidence he will ever take us to the promised land and there is zero evidence Nebraska is moving in that direction, other than the eternal koolaid we all drink every year.
In reality, Riley is a hell of a guy who represents the state well, but the numbers don't lie. He is who he is.
