Mike Reilly , Scott Frost, Fred Hoiberg…

Averitas … Do you contend that a positive or negative hiring decision can only be made at the time of hire?

If you made a hire in business and everyone says - this is our guy, absolute stud, great experience. A year later he’s banging half the office, charging escorts to the company card and doing blow in the bathroom. Is anyone going to say he was a home run hire?
Bad hire, but an absolute blast to party with!

It did not work out here, but Mike Riley was a good football coach. The guy took on a variety of tough coaching challenges, never took an easy coaching gig. Nebraska was a fricken hornet's nest. Still is.
He never took an easy gig because he wasn’t ever good enough as a coach to get an easy gig

By that logic we could say, “he drove our program deeper into the dirt than we ever thought possible, but he was the right hire.”?

“Well yeah, John may have embezzled millions, bankrupted the company, fvcked my wife and got us investigated by the FBI and IRS but… Damn we all agreed that he was the best guy for the job at the time and I’m not prepared to say it was mistake. Great hire.”

🤣😂🤣😂🤣

Good question. I think I would go Riley simply because he took a team that was winning and had talent and drove it into the ground. Fred and Frost took over bad programs and failed to make them better. Frost actually made it even worse, so he would be my 1b I think Fred is where Miles was when we let him go, so he kept a middle program right where they were.

frost was everyone's dream hire before the fact. i saw nobody here write that he was a "shittiest hire."

that written, it will be interesting to watch how he does at ucf. i suppose if he's successful there it will be because he's in the "shittiest" conference.

He was a shitty hire, because of his shitty results. But yes, playing in the shittiest conference should help him in the future.

the point remains, he was everyone's first choice. the hire was correct at the time. thus, it wasn't the shittiest hire.
But the way @spartanhusker asked the question . He is asking Which coach did or is doing a /worst Job as a Nebraska coach. That’s how a took it . You are taking the other way

if you want to base this on results, Mike Riley was the best of the bunch in a landslide

and that includes our current soft nice guy head coach

I don’t think anyone who is being honest with themselves would disagree with that. Doesn’t mean Riley was a good coach or shouldn’t have been fired. Being the best looking turd in the toilet isn’t accomplishment, but it may distinguish you from the other turds I guess…

Frost was worst hire of the 3- I am not sure why this still bothers me but I remember after he was hired at NU, Mike and Mike had him on the phone on their show and one of them misspoke and said he was the new coach at Alabama, instead of Frost humbly correcting him on it, he proceeded to scoff at the notion they said the wrong state. It was a bad look for him then, was a good foreshadow of his NU tenure to come.

Mike Riley was a terrible fit and his type of football/recruiting wasn't working here.

Fred? Honestly don't care, Il watch NU BB if they are competent, if they aren't I don't. When they lose it doesn't burn a whole in my heart like football does.

Everyone celebrated 2/3....

I might be the only idiot who thought Riley was a solid choice at the time...certainly nobody else did. But alas, i'm an idiot..even argued about it on this very board...those of you who didn't see what I saw were just missing the boat.

I liked Mike

Nice guy Riley was a breath of fresh air after Bo and his pissy attitude towards the media & fans. I was one that bought in that Riley could be good here... 🫤
I think with Mike Riley it was more about age. I think if he was the 2006 Mike Riley better results. I will say though that he had some decent ideas. If not forced to fire his DC/ Tre Bryant didn't have "old man knees" 2017 might have been a good year.

Frost could have worked. A better staff would have done wonders there. Riley had no shot.
Especially when you're told to fire one of your long time assistants (DC - Banker) who actually wasn't terrible.

It wouldn't have mattered though. Riley, unfortunately, wasn't going to work out here anyway.

While Riley did have some talent, it wasnt deep and unfortunately many minds were poisoned by Pelini when he was shown the door.

Remember we had to start Ryker Fyfe a couple games and didn't we have like 3 walk-on OL start against Ohio St? Our starters were good, but depth was troublesome.

mbb is starting to lose its attraction for me. nil, the portal, the season length, the bang and hang game itself, well all that has turned me to wbb, where the athletes actually go to school and tend to stick around for a college career. of course, we suck harder than a new born piglet in mbb, so that probably has something to do with it.
