LSU Candidates

the thing with Herman is that he recruits exclusively the Houston area ... Houston is only a 4 hr drive from Baton Rouge and Dallas is only 6 hours
You would have a coach that is already deeply engrained in the 2 biggest recruiting hotbeds in Texas
I wonder if Herman will stay at Houston, fully expecting an invite from the Big 12? It would be an easier conference to win than the SEC

Did you see the pre game footage tonight of Tom hugging and kissing each of his players on the cheek. The ESPN reporter said his players were taken back by this routine at first but now they understanding the power of the connection he is establishing. Tom says he doesn't give them "ass out hugs" he gets in close and tells them I love you. This is a tight team. If Louisville beats Clemson the Louisville-Houston game will be one of the biggest games of the year.

You are the AD at LSU.

What current Power 5 coach is a proven commodity who you think is worth in the neighborhood of 50 million dollars to turn over the old staff and bring in a new one, who gives you a guaranteed better chance of beating Saban on the regular?

There probably isn't one. I personally think Herman is as good as any if you are putting your neck out on the line this far. Stoops seems to be losing his edge. Fisher, somehow manages to underachieve quite a bit with the talent machine that is FSU, and Briles has never had a team with a defense and a baggage train that is probably unmatched in current college football. Petrino is also a good choice.

I don't think any one of those guys is a "clear cut" upgrade (Petrino may well be the best one) and most may end up doing no better than Miles.

Baton Rouge isn't for everyone. I would think Herman does a Peterson and waits for the "right" program to roll along. He's not hurting in Houston.

There are very few jobs that come close to LSU, again if he wouldn't take that job he's a coward and wants an easy job, of course he did coach under Urban who tucked tail to get an easier gig.....

Doesn't Herman have $5M reasons to hang around Houston to see if they get in to the Big 12? Somewhere I read or heard on the radio he gets that bonus if the school is admitted. In the grand scheme of things, when he lands a big time gig, the $5M he's risking won't be as significant since his initial contract will blow that away.

Is Houston a sleeping giant? Didn't Tom Osborne turn down Houston sometime in the 2000's? Or maybe it was a different non major Texas school he turned down?

If Herman wouldn't leave Houston for a job like LSU he's a straight up coward and not worth having.
I am not really up on things - but what entices you to leave Houston where you can build a break through powerhouse program; and there is surely a huge cultural difference between the two. I am saying if I could see my plans at Houston working ( and the money will be there ); what lure in my personal life gets me to move? Ego ( lol ); so called better fans ? ( plenty in Houston also ). With Scott Frosts plans; they may not be able to get him to dump on those buying in and run either ( he knows offers will come fast with an early turn around, he has the character to stay - you call him a coward ). Some want to build something and not dump and run for a few more dollars more; that they will likely never spend. Maybe Georgia's new coach can get out now. GBR

The reason Herman would look to leave would be the chance to win national championships. Until Houston is in a Power 5 league, they have an uphill battle to be 1 of the 4 team that are invited the the playoff. Strength of Schedule when compared to power 5 conference champions may keep them out. With news this week that the Big 12 may not actually expand, so his $5 mil bonus will not be paid out if Houston doesn't go to a power 5 league.

As far as support, Houston doesn't even sell out their 40,000 seat stadium right now. People aren't dropping their hard earned dollars to watch Connecticut, Navy, USF, East Carolina etc.

Most coaches are built like regular Joes. They aren't satisfied with building a winner in the "minor leagues". Hell yes ego is involved. It's why they didn't just stay assistant coaches at big time programs. It's why Urban Meyer left Utah for Florida, why Craig Bohl left NDSU for Wyoming and why Mark Dantonio left Cincinnati for Michigan St. as I said, most coaches are working to play for and win national championships not American or MAC or SunBelt conference titles or even FCS national titles. If Craig Bohl has success at Wyoming in the next couple of years, he will leave there too.

That's my $.10, my $.02 is free

LSU should have two names on their list. Tom Herman and David Shaw of Stanford. Herman to me is the number one choice but Shaw is also in the top five of coaches in my opinion.

UH isn't in the Big 12.
Pretty sure he knows that. But his point is vague.

You guys are making some really good arguments as to why Herman really is the best choice for LSU.
But what about Orgeron? Assuming he does a good job as interim, what are his chances? Or does he get screwed again like at USC?

It appears to me that people are assuming Houston is going to the Big 12 so Herman wouldn't be a candidate. At this point I would say there is a better chance the Big12 is no longer a league (by 2024) than there is UH joining the league.

You think Texas will bolt to the Pac12? Is that what will start the unraveling? OU and Kansas to the B1G??

His advantage over the others is that he now has the job and it's his to lose. If he can turn this team around and they close strong he may well have the inside track. The players love this guy!

He just isn't the homerun hire many Tiger fans are looking for.

Houston is never going to be a powerhouse football program.

Here is a question. Would Devany have rather been another coach at Michigan or the Bobfather at NU? My guess is he is glad he took a chance on building versus a job maintaining. Some guys are driven by these kind of dreams. That is a factor here with LSU's choice.

I agree he is not the homerun hire they want. But at one time Orgeron was a hot commodity too. Heck, there were people on this board who wanted him here.
The advantage to hiring him is continuity. Th disadvantage (for his chances) is continuity. Ha

Any school that is/was hiring recently should have went after Herman.

Next is Taggertt. He also has "it"

After that...there are just the established guys.

If they decide on Orgeron that may work out, but they can't be like SC and extend an interim guy 5 years with no search. Personally I would've reached out to Herman the second Miles left the stadium last Saturday.

THANK YOU Tuco; well worth the money +

I'm not saying he'd rather be at Houston or some other smaller school eternally.

Herman is probably #1 on every schools list as the next big thing. Meyer or Saban aren't going to coach forever, he could hang around a few years and maybe take the helm at Bama or OSU. He could end up at ND. UT may be entertaining a coaching search in a few years. USC is fishing for coaches.

There are several schools in LSU's general atmosphere he can pick from...and not be a coward.

Personally, LSU until Saban came and made them a big time powerhouse, didn't really have a phenomenal standing the CFB world.

Tom Herman is going to be a legend by the time his career is over. He's already on the same level as Jim Harbaugh, Urban Meyer, or maybe even Nick Saban. What he was able to accomplish with a 3rd string quarterback at Ohio State is amazing, winning a conference championship, a playoff game, and national championship game back to back. Has anything like that ever happened in the history of college football? That showed me everything I ever needed to know about how good he is and leading Houston to a 12-1 season in his first season there confirmed that. It seems like every quarterback he coaches is among the best in the country. Having that level of coaching ability at the qb position, the most important position, is invaluable. Tom Herman can compete anywhere. He can compete in the SEC and go toe to toe with Nick Saban and Alabama to win conference and national championships.

LSU would be stupid not to have Tom Herman as there #1, but I hope that's just what they are. I hope that LSU has a great rest of the year and that they keep Orgeron or that they go after Fisher instead, because I'm holding out hope that somehow we could get Tom Herman to come here. Herman is the only semi-realistic coach that could get us back to the Promised Land, back to the level of the 90's.
