Lenten season will be here soon

I like to think in terms of adding good things instead of just giving up things.

On a serious note…I take a break from social media, message boards and try to limit my technology use outside of work.

Every year I give up eating meat for Lent
A couple years ago the Archdiocese of Chicago issued a decree stating that people who give up meat for Lent, or just on Ash Wednesday and Lenten Fridays, should not eat plant-based burgers either. The archbishop said that eating an Impossible Burger or a Beyond Meat burger was not in the spirit of the season.

So at the bottom of the news article, in the comments section, I asked:

"Okay, but what about eating fake meat as penance?"

I got a lot of likes, but no response from the Church.

I've given up beer/alcohol for Lent but I also have a wonderful mother in law who told me something about Sundays don't count because they're not part of the 40 days of Lent. God bless her and Sunday beers!

Tried that one year, and made it about 3 days and I was all out of sorts. It’s a very difficult challenge, and while admirable, I wonder if it isn’t something that is a net negative from a health standpoint.
I understand your concern, and I might even agree if someone was giving up meat permanently. But I don’t think it’s going to do too much damage in 40 days if I give it a little bit of thought. Eating fish sandwiches every day probably wouldn’t work out that well for instance 😅
