On our last drive we had third and one. Newby had been running strong. So what does Langsdorf do? Use the true freshman Bryant on an absolutely critical third and one. It gets stuffed. Wtf????!!!!!! Why is Newby not in there on that play?

Was he dinged up? There were times during the game where he seemed a little dinged... but I don't know for sure.

Langsdorf is NOT the guy that determines who is on the field. In FACT Bryant may be the best power back on the team including DOz. That play was on the O line not Langsdorf.

And if Bryant just busts that carry outside we had 2 blockers pushing their guys way back, he would've made the first down easy.

He was probably gassed...This whole notion that Langsdorf doesn't know how to call plays is ridiculous. Our Offensive line was an absolute MASH unit today we were missing our top WR, TE, and leading rusher, our QB wasn't 100%, the officiating was absolutely horrible and we still put up 20 points offensively and got a win.

I'm not Langsdorf fan but today was hardly on him. I seen a couple of decisions that I would consider to be bad but other than that the game was called pretty well. We didn't exactly have roads paved for us today, those guys need to block..

I wish Riley would call the plays. Langsdorf sometimes calls plays Armstrong isn't good at executing. He doesn't call plays that will set up others down the road. It's easy to see he's just calling plays off his chart with no rhyme or reason.

I think we'd have a really good offense if Riley would call the plays. I know once or twice in the past Riley took over play calling from Langsdorf.

For real? DL has been so much better this year, and it has been shown repeatedly that he calls plays that set up others down the road.

Today isn't the best day to complain about DL when you look at our Oline injuries, no westerkamp or carter, a limited TA due to injury, and a run blitzing defense much of the game...

Look how much better DL has looked when our top weapons are available. Tough conditions today...

Better this year? Not very hard to be better than the debacle of last year.

As for today, he continued to call passes even though Tommy was running for is life on every pass call. There were some 3rd and short situations that Langsdorf couldn't help but call a pass when it would have been prudent to run the ball.

I like Langs too. Just did not understand why Bryant was in on that play. Some on here have offered cogent explanations for why. Thanks. Makes sense.
Gutty win yesterday. On both sides of the ball...

I cannot complain about the coaching on offense or defense. Sure there are going to be calls that don't produce, but there is marked improvement on both sides of the ball, even if there are some stats that might hide it at times.

I'll be the guy that says it. I love Langs. I think he's a top notch OC. It's a tough job, with a lot of scrutiny, but he's the best we've had in a long time.
DL has improved this year, but hasn't done anything yet to deserve 'top notch' status in my opinion. We have had some really good offensive coordinators here over the years, all of whom were hired by competitors in the league. DL absolutely sits well with that peer group, but has not shown he is head and shoulders better than what we have had.

As bad as the pass blocking was today, I thoughts langs did pretty well calling plays.

We need Carter back badly. His blocking was missed badly. Also, him not being in the game allowed their LBs to move down the line; they didn't have a real TE threat to worry about.

Top notch OCs have top notch QBs and O linemen......we're a little short on the O line thing with all the injuries and recruiting gaps in those upperclassmen. I love the guys we have on the O line, but they're not Miltie's pipeline just yet. Considering that 3 of the guys playing the bulk of the minutes are doing so because of injuries...... Play calling looks a whole lot better when you have the horses.

I guess I'm drawing a blank here, how far back are you going because I would say he's a heck of a lot better than: Beck, Watson, Norvell and Cotton.

what this offense is doing with a below average Oline and a QB who has a completion % approaching 50% is amazing

extremely difficult to call plays with that combo

I have to agree somewhat with this. There are just some calls like the long passes on 3rd and short when we've been running decently that are perplexing. I'm not saying that you won't call that play a few times, but it seems to be a recurring theme. Maybe when we have that "pure passer" in a few years that play is successful more often than not. I also realize it's easy to judge after the fact from a recliner in front of a big screen tv projecting a camera angle above the field . GBR

Exactly... I think some people get caught up in the play call WAY to much. If your Oline is having breakdowns almost every play because it's banged up and subbing with "hard working back up guys" and your QB is a little gimpy and your top WR, top TE, AND one of your top RB's is out. It ain't gonna matter a whole he!! of a lot what play you call, it probably ain't gonna look good most of the time.

All of those guys are good. Curious why you think they are not?

Why would Urban Meyer hire Beck?
Why would Louisville, Texas, and Indiana hire Watson?
Why would UCLA, Oklahoma, Texas, and Arizona State hire Norvell?

Only Barney is missing the high profile hires.

I recognize it is just opinion, but I found your post really silly in acting like we have had poor OC's and somehow DL was a cut above those guys.

DL is knowledgeable and is doing a good job this year compared to last year. I just don't see how he deserves more praise lavished upon him at this time.

Maybe you can provide some depth or context as to why?

Yet when the game is on the line the online produces a long drive. Langsdorf is much better this year especially closing out games. He however has to fight his tendency to throw the ball even we are not passing well, I believe he just loses patience but he is getting better

This is what I don't get about this damn team and the offense. They sputter through most of a game and then the lights come on in crunch time and suddenly we become road graders and produce long drives.

Hmmm, I was so busy hoping things would come together for the win, that I didn't think about what was actually going on in the game. So, just disjointed thoughts.

We completed less than 40% of our passes and gave up two INT's. Indy's DL got their 10,000 steps for the day all in our backfield chasing TA around.

Read needs to scrap his "Moses parts the Red Sea" punt blocking scheme. Want to give the other team hope,... just give them a straight line to the punter... up the middle ... for a safety.

When Zander Diamont (?) was the qb, my blood pressure doubled.

So is Langsdorf good or bad. It was hard to watch that game. I'm just glad we won.

Everyone of those guys took a step down after leaving Nebraska. Beck went from OC here to co-OC without play calling duties at OSU. Watson went from OC to QB coach at Louisville. Barney went from OC here to OC at ISU to a volunteer HS coach. Norvell wanted to call plays so he went to UCLA where he was fired after one season and then went to OU as a co-OC without play calling duties.

I recognize its your opinion, but acting like these guys took the same job or even moved up after leaving Nebraska is just silly. They all landed on their feet in some capacity, but none have proven to be very good OC's.

I don't know if any of you have ever read Husker Chalk Talk (linked), but the author kills it as far as football knowledge, and he is real high on Langsdorf (as am I). I was POed about passing on a 3rd and 2 yesterday, but was pretty happy with the offensive game plan otherwise. I thought we should have ran wide more and had more misdirection, but I am just an armchair guy.
