If our genius offensive coordinator would have run the ball in the middle to late portion of the fourth quarter to milk the clock...Arkansas State wouldn't have had time to try to tie the game.

Coaching, playcalling, clock management in the fourth quarter...Grade F!!!

Run the gawd dam ball. Terrible play calling in the 4th quarter

Riley and Langsdorf do not have a good handle how to manage the clock when having a lead late in a game. This has been proven in multiple games. They preach the importance of running the ball but then they pull this stunt in the fourth quarter. When they talk about running the ball...they truly don't believe it in crucial portions of the game.

Nebraska should have hung near 60 on Arky State, but spent a lot of time in the 4th floundering. I hate to see what's coming next week against Oregon. Hard to believe the defense will make much if any strides in a week of preparation.

And we're still holding out hope that this crew will bring us (and them) the first championship since the turn-of-the-century?

These are the type of offensive coaching decisions that leave me scratching my head. Run the ball...force Arkansas State to use their timeouts.

Bryant had 192 yards rushing and was averaging 6.2 yards per carry yet you pass the ball all over the field in the middle of the fourth quarter on...really?

Agreed X 10000

I'll start by saying I'm mostly in Riley's camp. But we've definitely seen in his short tenure that the Huskers aren't good at stepping on an opponent's throat when in the lead. In year one, what could go wrong did go wrong. In year two those close games went the Huskers way. In tonight's game the team is up 15 and has the ball and the offense goes flat. This is absolutely when they need to finish the game by exerting their will and pounding the ball.

Possibly they don't know how to close games because they were rarely in a position to do that at Oregon State.

Regardless, the D definitely deserves more blame than the play calling on O.

I don't understand how a supposed hot shot coach has the team out there looking completely lost. Do you think Ark State puts up 17 even on Bama, Wisconsin, Mich, Ohio State? We are really a long ways away from fielding a top 15 D.

Is talent that bad or what is happening??

Langs has always been a questionable play caller at best.

He doesn't have a good feel how to close out a tight game in the fourth quarter. He thinks you need to keep throwing the ball all over the field. The quickest way to a win a game when you have the lead deep in the fourth quarter is to control the ball and milk the clock. How about milk the clock and keep your defense that has been having trouble most of the night off the field so they can't have an opportunity to score and possibly win the game?

This type of clock management will cost us a game this year.

They dont learn well do they.
This crap is what got us in trouble in year one. Multiple times.

Football 101. Shouldnt matter what happened at Oregon state. Stop out thinking yourselves.
(I know you are just trying to think of theories...im lost on it too)

Since hiring football consultants and analysts is in vogue right now in college football. Maybe someone can sit in the offensive coaching box and have direct contact with Riley/Langs on their headsets and remind them to call a few extra running plays in order to increase the odds of winning the game by running clock?

Doesn't Nebraska already have a statistical analytics team working in the athletic department? I think we found a project for them this week. Winking

We tried running the clock against Wisky last year. I don't have a problem throwing on third and four when a first down puts the game away. Fact is, all the blame for this game is squarely on Diaco and the defense. Absolutely pathetic.

I believe you are onto something with your remark "Possibly they don't know how to close games because they were rarely in a position to do that at Oregon State." I agree that when Riley was at Oregon State he was always scrambling to get a win therefore he has never learned to put a team away. Since his tenure in Lincoln began the Huskers have been in far too many close games in the 4th quarter when they should have already achieved control of the game. Holy cow! Mike is older than me. Will he ever learn? I definitely think he has a future in Lincoln. Lincoln City on the Oregon coast enjoying his even larger and nicer beach house paid for with Husker dollars.

Has he bought a house in Lincoln? Does his wife live there or does she run back to Oregon?

Here's the bottom line. The Huskers have plenty of talent. Their offensive fire power is pretty good. Lee, D P-E, Bryant, Morgan, Lindsey and Speilman are pretty dynamic players. The Tight Ends played well and the O Line played ok for much of the game. I think there is talent on the defensive side as well. The team just needs leadership that will manage a game and put the team in a position to win. Whether Riley and his staff are capable of achieving this is the question that has been out there since they arrived in Lincoln. I think the jury is still out.

My thing is that we scored 43 points. I haven't seen our offense look as crisp over a long period of gameplay as it did tonight in a long time. Yes we went flat late in the game. But that's an above average amount of points if you ask me—enough to win you the game. Unfortunately, our defense almost gave away the game with the 5000 bubble screen completions to the sides for 5-6 yards a pop. I believe that we have the personnel necessary to stop teams consistently, but something has to be altered or changed before next week. You bet I'll be taking notes on game tape once it's uploaded on Youtube. GBR. We're 1-0.

the offense scored 34 pts against a sun belt team. it was fine, but nothing spectacular or that we haven't done a hundred times before.

That finger tip catch, down by the goal line, by the tight end, #88 was OUTSTANDING. There are a lot of wide receivers who don't make that catch. He also had at least 1 other impressive catch. Anyway, he probably made other plays but those 2 caught my attention.

34 points against the Sun Belt team that has won it's conference 5 of the last 6 years. I wasn't happy with the defensive performance but their D was no joke. They have one DL that will possible be a first rounder this winter but we handled him. This wasn't your average Sun Belt team.

Bitching about the offense and offensive play calling. I wonder what game people watch sometimes.

go look at what other power 5 teams put on em the last 5 years. we did nothing special. like i said, it was fine.

I didn't say we did anything special. I also don't think a close game to these guys isn't the end of the world. I suspect with all the sophomores and freshmen we're playing on offense and defense that we're a year away. My expectations for the year are 8-9 wins if we can avoid major injury problems and catch a few breaks.

We won, great. We were exploited in one facet of the game defensively for substantial yardage. That is worrying. The defense has to show up and hold the Ducks to the high twenties or low thirties in order to give us a chance to win.

Agreed , look at that series On re-play Riley is pissed and reacts by yanking is head set off .
Unfortunately we don't know if some of those passes were audibles or not. Maybe Langsdorf or Lee will shed some light on it this week. I saw another time where we had to call time out as the play clock wound down that it appeared Lee was audibling.

I went back and rewatched the game with BTN in 60 and found information published by the athletic department with regards to the drive chart etc... Sometimes I get a "little" excited during the games so I wanted to make sure my initial impressions weren't off base.

NEBRASKA drive start at 09:26.

1-10 Neb 40 Tre Bryant rush over left tackle for 7 yards to the NEB47 (Clifton, Justin).

2-3 Neb 47- Stanley Morgan rush over right end for 2 yards to the NEB49 (Ellis-Brewer, T).
Ball snapped with 12 seconds left on the play clock

3-1 Neb 49- Tanner Lee pass complete to Mikale Wilbon for 6 yards to the A-ST45, fumble forced by P25
Jackson, D., fumble by Mikale Wilbon recovered by NEB Mikale Wilbon at A-ST45, 1ST DOWN NEB, out-of-bounds (Jackson, D.). Ball snapped with 5 seconds on play clock

1-10 A-st 45 Tre Bryant rush up middle for 5 yards to the A-ST40 (Jackson, D.;Harris, T.J.).
Ball snapped with 12 seconds left on the play clock

2-5 A-st 40. Tanner Lee pass incomplete to Stanley Morgan (Taylor, Blaise).

3-5 A-st 40. Tanner Lee pass incomplete to JD Spielman, QB hurry by Wilson, Kyle.

2nd and 3rd down take total of 9 seconds off of the play clock

4-5. A-st 40. C. Lightbourn punt 36 yards to the A-ST4, downed.
6 plays, 20 yards, 2:43

NEBRASKA drive start at 05:46.

1-10 Neb 22. Tre Bryant rush up middle for 2 yards to the NEB24 (Wilson, Kyle;Rolland-Jones).

2-8. Neb 24. Tre Bryant rush over right tackle for 4 yards to the NEB28 (Ellis-Brewer, T).
Ball snapped with 9 seconds on the play clock

3-4. Neb 28. Tanner Lee pass incomplete to JD Spielman. 3rd down play takes 6 seconds off play clock

4-4. Neb 28. C. Lightbourn punt 35 yards to the A-ST37, fair catch by Taylor, Blaise.
3 plays, 6 yards, 1:28

Nebraska could have waited to snap the ball at 5 seconds on 2 plays left on the play clock in the possession that started at 9:26. Nebraska could have taken more time off the game clock when it was 2-5 and 3-5 instead of only using 9 total seconds for those two plays combined.

Nebraska could have also taken more time off the clock if they ran the ball on 3-4 in the last drive.

I really enjoyed the playcalling by Langsdorf for most of the game. However, I believe we made it more challenging in the end by not milking the clock more in the last 2 possessions and leaving ASU more time on the clock to mount their comeback. I am glad Nebraska was able to come away with a hard fought victory. :)

I didn't have a problem with play calling, they mixed it up pretty good. the execution is a different story.
I like the #1 backs cuts and speed, wished he had more power.
I liked seeing the running game and long passes to keep their defense honest, plus hitting the tight end.
you maybe right about the end of the game running would be wise kill the clock, but the game in general, I want to see them mix it up, keep them guessing and use all our weapons.

The issue is clock stoppage after an incomplete pass. First, if you are up two scores your qb is going to be very careful with the ball which Lee was. That's good on his part but bad on Langs because there is a greater likelihood of stopping the clock. Langs has done this too long to keep making idiotic mistakes. If Riley doesn't take the play calling back, he at least needs to make it clear that this moronic 4th quarter play calling needs to change.

Tough to second guess that. Asu was probably lined up to stuff the run, so passing plays could've caught them off guard... but it didnt.

Wrong thinking. In the last series we had 2nd and five. Your run the ball and follow a Billy C. Euphemism: We take what we want.
