What the magazines say: 2017 Nebraska Cornhuskers
by Sean Keeler, Land of 10

WHAT THE MAGS SAY: NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS

Athlon (national edition)

Preseason Rank: 43

Predicted record: 7-5, 5-4 Big Ten

Predicted Finish:
3rd in the West Division

Projected Bowl:
Pinstripe

Quote to Note: "Nebraska hasn't won a conference championship since 1999 and has played in only one Big Ten Championship Game -- a 70-31 loss to Wisconsin in 2012. With so many changes on offense, defense and special teams, the Huskers would seem to be long shots to play in a second this season."

They said what again? From an opposing Big Ten assistant coach: "They're not [recruiting] in Florida and Texas and California the way they did in their glory years. That's the big secret to why they've fallen off." Florida and Texas, maybe. And yet 247Sports tracks the Big Red with 12 California commitments from 2015-18, compared to just seven, combined, in the four classes prior to that period.

Lindy's (national edition)

Preseason Rank:
36

Predicted Record: N/A

Predicted Finish: 4th in the West Division

Projected Bowl: N/A

Quote to Note: "It's realistic to ask about potential growing pains for the defense in a new system with new verbiage and new assistant coaches. Nebraska again lacks an Ameer Abdullah-like playmaker in the backfield and loses a ton from the receiving corps."

They said what again? "The Huskers aren't there yet, though their ceiling definitely is higher than fourth in the division." You'd think. At least, you'd hope.

Street & Smith's

Preseason Rank:
N/A (Not in Top 25)

Predicted Record: N/A

Predicted Finish: 3rd in the West Division

Projected Bowl: TaxSlayer

Quote to Note: "[DE Freedom Akinmoladun is] the key piece in the Huskers' transition to a 3-4 scheme under new defensive coordinator Bob Diaco. Akinmoladun's sack total dropped as a sophomore, but he still managed 10 QB hurries. He'll make a leap as a junior."

They said what again? Regarding the quarterback race: "This is a battle that likely won't be settled until the opener." Only it was settled more than a month ago, with Tanner Lee getting the starting nod. Thanks, spring copy deadlines!
