Keona Davis to the portal

Is White and pot roast going to raid our whole defensive future for crying out loud.
Whoever winds up there, at least you know both Tony and Pot Roast have actually seen what they can do on a football field, so its a lot less gamble than taking kids just off of film. They also know their personalities and willingness to be coached and work to get better.

If the situation was in our favor, say we brought in a stud DC and his DL coach and they brought a stud DT and EDGE player as well as a LB and a couple secondary guys, I doubt we'd be crying about it.

No different than Cig bringing 16 kids with him from James Madison to Indiana. He had to know he wasn't bringing in the cream of the crop nationally, but he did know those kids, their ability level, their ability to be coached, their willingness to work, etc, so that translated into a very much improved Indiana team.

According to portal rules, when a player enters the portal, he can return but the coaches do not have to offer him a scholarship.

So, if he leaves, and he was a scholarship kid who really didn't fit in your plans you could forewarn him the scholarship will not be available if he chooses to return, or can make that decision without telling the kid then either give him the scholarship back or decide not to.
But there are no more “walk-one”, only 105 scholarship players. So if they accept a transfer back into the fold, he will be on scholarship.

This would be a big loss. Out of all of the ones going from NU to the portal, I think Keona would gather the most interest. He will get some attractive offers$$$$.

Having a generation of kids who have gotten used to participation ribbons and everybody massaging their self esteem hasn't always paid dividends.
No, but I think that a tough minded coach can actually do quite well with the kids of today. He's got to be a guy who builds relationships with his players though. Can't be tough and act like you don't give a sh*t with the kids of today, but then again what generation of kids did that ever work with?

The good kids all wanted to be coached like Vince Lombardi treated his players. When asked if Lombardi coached different players differently, they all said no. "He treats us all the same. Like dogs."

You win with tough kids. Tough kids like high expectations and don't want anyone to be coddled. I've read two books on Lombardi. Great leader and he didn't give out a lot of praise. But when he did, it meant something. Free agency was not much of a thing back then though so once you were on the Packers, that's probably where you were going to stay unless they traded you or cut you.

Not so. While the squad is limited to 105, there is no requirement that all or any of them actually be given any aid. Of course, if you don't give them any aid you'd have a team of 105 walk-ons and go winless. But there may be some schools who, for whatever reason, hold back a few of the 105 spots for walk-ons.

I'm not saying there's an alternative, but doing this every single time a guy enters the portal is super great fun! How many left to go? 40?
I will have a disappointed reaction if Van Poppel was to enter the portal. But this IS less than ideal for husker nation.

That's not necessarily true. It's a 105 ROSTER limit. You can still have walk-ons they just count to the 105 roster limit. You don't have to give scholarships to all the guys and I expect that will be the case for some cash strapped programs.

Why not, you're only in your 60's right? I had that dream but finally gave it up when I turned 70.
There's still time for you.
Yeah I had a hip replaced on my 50th birthday. I was going to have my right knee replaced this summer during down time for my farm but blew out my right shoulder this spring so had to have that done. It kept popping out of joint. I dislocated it my senior year on a practice hit. Missed that day was all.... My right hip needs to be replaced someday and my left shoulder has a full thickness rotator cuff tear. I'm a mess. Oh yeah, my orthopod thinks I really should have two lumbar and two cervical disc spaces fused. Hurt my neck in a game my senior year too. They gave me one of those foam neck pad donuts. Never missed a snap or practice. Other than that I'm sure I could get 2 on a third and one... Oh yeah. Nearly forgot. Tore my left ACL in a ski incident as a teenager. Didn't know it until I was about 40. Played sports, high jumped etc jumping off that leg. No idea. Tore all my outside ligaments on my right ankle in a basketball game as a junior. Never had that fixed so about once a year my right ankle dislocates and I have to bend down and put it back. No big deal. Ain't sports fun!!! Think that's all..🧑‍🦽

You best stick to verbal arguments like I do.

I can still punch. Liked to fight a little as a youth. Last guy who tried me they pulled me off him as I had him by the hair banging his head off of a tile floor. I heard his buddy the next day telling somebody "I thought he was gonna kill him". Yeah I might have had some anger issues. I always gave the other guy the first swing and I never usually needed a second one to finish it.

You have to hold some spots open for late transfers if nothing else. That leaves an opening for a walk on who would be immediately cut if you find a transfer you want. I can't imagine a walk ons being willing to be in that situation but maybe there will be some.

Combination of Forrest Gump and Jack Reacher.
