My biggest criticisms of Riley have been his inability or unwillingness to fill in obvious roster shortcomings with JUCO players and not moving out non-contributors. I was curious so I looked back at his Oregon State teams and was fairly surprised to see he had quite a few JUCO players and certainly processed a lot more players there then he has here at DONU. (Hat tip to ButchCassidy).

Since the AD change there has already been at least one offer to a JUCO - maybe evidence that our prior AD probably was directing my hypothetical policies? Hopefully it was the AD and not higher up because if we haven't gotten rid of these policies DONU is screwed as far as roster management.

The problem is that if you can't get rid of non-contributors you naturally restrict your offers to only players you are pretty certain will contribute - and thus no last minute "roster filler" recruits and short-comings on signing day because you can't afford to guarantee a roster spot for 4 years to a "possible". Add in that you can't fill holes with JUCO's and to me it pretty perfectly sums up our "big fish" approach to recruiting and current roster problems.

Just food for thought.
