Did he attend many rivals/scout camps? Sometimes it effects your rating, not that I really care about stars, just curious if he would have been rated higher with more exposure. Is he the real deal? Obviously, his numbers are eye popping!

Real deal; and numbers against some of the best.

I remember seeing in local articles that he attended some camps and performed well. His coach thought he performed better than players who garnered accolades at those camps. If I had to guess, I would say not being academically eligible until late in the recruiting game probably hurt his rating (ie didn't get a proper evaluation because the analysts didn't want to waste their time on a player that hadn't qualified academically). Not really sure how the ratings work.

Regardless, I'm very happy for him that he qualified and happy that he signed with NU.

Not sure if many but his profile pic comes from a rivals camp so we know he at least attended one. His low ranking was due to grades and Rivals lack of faith in Nebraska HS football. That's Ok by me. His grades are no longer an issue and I believe Jaylin is just now becoming a good football player. He has big time upside. Lots of 4 and 5 stars have already hit there peek.

JB is my sleeper superstar of this class. Last year it was Engelhaupt and word is David is likely to be the #1 receiving TE next year. Rivals disbelief in Nebraska HS football is probably warranted. Back when the website first started up until about 2007, at least 1 NE kid received a 4-star ranking. Horne, Grix, D Jones, Muller, T Robinson, Stein, etc. I guess the fact that none of those guys became extremely great made rivals and others think twice about football in the state. Oh well, it's rankings are just educated guesses and they miss on a lot of kids both ways. Excited to see what JB can do and excited that he has 3 experienced backs in front of him to allow him time to learn.

If he can get a little faster and stronger he will be a massive sleeper he can take on defenders with moves that are insane and has insane vision.

He gonna be a good one. And from what I hear, the kid is a grinder.

Call me crazy, but watching him reminds of "sweetness."

He does need to step up. Only 1 back in the whole country. Wow.
Would you rather have an ACE recruiter or a good RB coach. I know it would be nice to have both. He turned Newby in to a danged good back from a very average tap dancer. Ozihgbo came in and has looked very good as has Bryant. That's not an accident. Yeah it would be nice to land a 5 star RB but I'm not sure how big of a priority it was this year because they knew they would get Jaylin if he qualified and were pretty sure he would. That said we got a kid that looks really good so be happy. IF Billy thinks he's not pulling his weight, we'll know. We've got a walk on back that has turned some heads and will provide depth in addition to the scholarship guys.

In all seriousness, Wyatt has garnered comparisons to a former North Platte native who now plays for the Chargers.
I didn't want to say it, but I had heard that too. In any case, he's not chopped liver for a backup and he would probably play for a lot of D-1 schools.

Is it too much to ask to want both...especially at a school like Nebraska with a rich tradition for running backs? Winking
Nope but IMO, he's done a good job of coaching our RBs and I really don't see any holes on offense this cycle that he could have done much about. I still think we almost HAD to take Jaylin if he qualified and I'm not sure we were going to take 2 backs. I'm not sure we can fault his recruiting just yet .

I think he's a really smart coach too. Hopefully if he can't get it done, one of our other coaches can team-recruit with him to gnab a couple stud RBs. I think we're going to need 2 next year.

ACE recruiter and it's not even close. The list of guys who can be a "good RB coach" is ridiculously long and extends into the FCS and D2 ranks, and actually even HS coaches. Those guys are a dime a dozen.

Not to mention, I don't think Reggie is all that great of a RB coach either. Newby will be the first husker RB starter not to make the league since Marlon Lucky. And let's not act like Newby was an under the radar recruit. He was a 4 star highly recruited kid out if CA with about a million rushing TDs in his SR of HS. The kid was legit coming out of HS, if anything I'd say he never hit his potential. Not saying that's on the coaches but I'm not crowning Davis as a great coach based on Newby or Oz & honestly I think it's ridiculous some are.

With all our tradition we have @ RB recruiting RBs should probably be the easiest spot to recruit on the team. Hell even Bo consistently landed highly recruited RBs. It's just a shame that the program has never had a great player go on to be a great RB coach and wanted to come back to NU to coach. Burns & Rathman are just that but they have never had interest in coming back.

And Newby looked like crap before he took over. Bryant played and looked darned good as a true freshman. Who recruited him? I'm not sure how many RBs you think he should have recruited this year and who you think he was going to get. I've seen great improvement in Newby and he's done a good job with our young backs. Not just any Joe Blow could have gotten a true freshman ready to play in this offense. Again, IF BC and MR think he isn't pulling his weight, they'll pull the plug. Until then he works for me. The only guys that weren't pulling their weight on the recruiting trail lost their jobs after the bowl game.

No running back will be great without at least a good offensive line. My eyes told me that our offensive line was not too good, especially against the better teams that we played.

I expect our offensive line to be better next season and our running game better.

Tommy Armstrong was a good runner who was running for his life until injured. We have such short memories.

Our Oline 2-deep against Fresno. Frosh/RS Frosh backing up at 4 of the 5 spots. The two senior starters were a walkon and a former walkon. Foster suffered what we all thought was a season ending injury in Fall camp. By the end of the season, Gates, Farmer, Knevel and Utter were either injured or recovering from injuries. Really bad luck with injuries and depth that was simply too young across the board.
Next year we return five guys with starter's experience and we will have young guys pushing slightly less young guys for a spot on the two deep. Conrad will likely be the only walkon on the two deep. We were lucky to have him step up last season. We have three returning backs plus the new kid. If Lee can up our passing game the backs should see better running lanes.

You are being way too optimistic and utilizing way too many facts!

I like it! And I agree!

Looking at the overall play of the backs, making the most of what was available, catching the ball, holding on to the ball, and blocking - the group was steady and consistent but not spectacular. Given that we had barely a 50 percent passing effort and a lacklustre O line, I am not sure what more they could have done . You didn't exactly see guys running free all over the place on long runs.

I follow recruiting but not an expert by any means and I just didn't hear any buzz on RB's for this class. This last one was very late in the process. You would think with the NU resources and facilites and tradiions, getting a 4 star to commit to NU wouldn't be too difficult. NU has a strong tradition of great backs. Ahman Green NE, Rozier NJ, Rogers NE, AA AL, Burkhead TX, Helu CA, Newby CA, Lawerenc Phillips CA, Marlon Lucky CA etc. I have left many off the list.

I remember Newby being a 4 star of of Calif. I wouldn't say he turned Newby into a danged good back. Newby was elite coming out of Calif.

My point is, NU should be able to get a elite RB from somewhere in the Country. The good ones have come from all over if you look at my list. I am glad Jaylin committed. I am just hoping for a 4 star to commit earlier in the process.

Absolutely.
I predicted in another thread he will be returning kicks next year and may see the field otherwise. Hes fun to watch.

Did you watch Newby his first two years? He was far from elite coming in here. He ran tentatively, danced around and always tried to bounce things outside. Our coach turned him in to a much tougher and decisive runner. I don't care what his star ranking was. He didn't play well until we changed coaching staff. Jaylin was a back we wanted and would have likely been ranked higher if he didn't have academic concerns. His offer list certainly would have been larger. We wanted one back. We got a back we were going to take if he qualified. End of discussion.

Agree. In addition, everyone always complains we don't take Nebraska kids, then when we do, it is like OMG, he isn't good enough. I have a real good feeling about this recruit. I especially liked this:

“It’s something I’ve been working for since I was a little kid,” said Bradley. “It’s been a dream. To see it finally come true, it feels good. “Now I’ve got something to prove ... considering that I’m from Nebraska, and a lot of people sometimes think Nebraska players aren’t as good.”

Bradley committed the first week in January. The coaching staff in home visited Verdell the 3rd week in January. For those that can't do the most simple of math, we we're still trying to flip Verdell after Bradley committed.

Bradley has the makings of a good back for us, but all signs pointed to us wanting another back this cycle.

Watching the film, Jaylin can do things Verdell can't, not much that Verdell can do that Jaylin can't. I'm not the expert like our coaches, but I like how Jaylin has a massive chip on his shoulders to prove to our coaches he's legit. Heck, I just don't see much of a drop off at all between Jaylin and Stephen Carr... just going by the videos.

Why not take two backs. Zig and Wilbon are juniors, and quite frankly, Wilbon hasn't developed as much as we would like. In two years we are going to need backs.

Who knows if Wilbon will stick around either. Could end up with just Zig, Bryant, and tFR Bradley. Yikes!

Wilbon has already used his RS, so if he goes, he sits for a year to play a year. That is, unless he goes 1AA.
