James Williams to the portal

I am going to ASSUME not too many walk ons will be asked to stay
I can imagine maybe keeping a few. I would imagine our NiL walk-ons will probably go on scholarship. We have time to figure that out. It would be nice to have some of the walk-ons here for spring competing for scholarships. Gotta be a few guys in that many kids who are worthy of a roster spot.

With that approach, we're still trying to invent the effing wheel.

With many exceptions, walk-ons are walk-ons for a reason. If they had visible contributory signs, somebody would have scooped them up and offered them. What we don't need is a bunch of wannabe's on this squad. If a kid walks on and is on the squad 2-3-4 years and never plays a meaningful snap, what good does that do other than take up space?

That's not to say a couple walkons can't become valuable players, but isn't that the rationale that got into the 172 player roster in the first place and will result in blood letting just to come back to the pack numbers wise?

I'd much rather offer a kid from N. Dakota State or Montana who has excelled at that level and "might" come in and actually contribute. There are lots of really good players at that lower level.

I don’t disagree with you but there very well could be a few walk-ons who have proven their worth in practice. I have no idea who we have that might fit that scenario. We’re going to need to have room for some transfers too. Keeping some walk-ons on the roster through spring I can’t believe would hurt anything.

I wouldn't be shocked to see a player say they are leaving and then stay. Portal doesn't open until the 9th I believe. This is an emotional time and some of these players are already very emotional.

Only a couple players that I would be really bummed if they leave:

Raiola
Barney
Nelson
McGahee
Wright
Shavers
Lloyd

Matt's gonna do what he wants to. If a kid has been here 2 years and is still not on the depth chart, what are the chances now unless his upward trajectory was caused by a lot of non-senior players who have just moved on?

The more kids who probably aren't gonna contribute just makes it that much harder to think about moving the program forward.

What is the fall out, if say, Rhule and staff keep 20 walkons hanging on through winter and then in spring just recruits over them in the April portal and then cuts them?

Would really make you feel like you were used just for being a body and nothing more, kinda how it is now, its just unspoken.

Could be a tremendously negative thing with instate kids who are borderline scholarship kids who decide to just opt out and go to N. Dakota State or another good lower level program.

that message would be good for this team, IMO.

much better than "I will never chase anyone from the program. Our players are treated so well here." which is what he said just about a month ago.

dog eat dog world & cfb is cutthroat business

Unless these guys are being forced out just seems like this would not be a good year to enter the portal Willy nilly with the amount of guys going to be in the portal with every program cutting to 105. Gotta be a full portal and a lot of guys not getting p4 spots.

Doubt this has anything to do with Knighton. Williams I think comes from pretty tough circumstances and he's probably heard some bigger NIL offers. NU gave him his shot. Kinda sucks for him to do this but if you've grown up with nothing and somebody waves a check in front of your nose it's tough to turn down. Hopefully it works out for him and he actually gets paid.
This has everything to do with Knighting. Williams said publicly he is like a father figure. Tony White needs guys who know his defense.

He appeared physically hurt to talk about the impact of roster limits. Guy doesn't have it in him to fire someone underperforming for the good of the company. He has fired guys for failing morally (hate that as I'm Noone to define morals of another).
Satt, Mcguire, ect.... demoting never works. Foley going to get an analyst job too? He has run it like a mom and pop and this is a fortune 500. Get it done or get out.

That’s right, every year need to raid MAC PAC 12 AAC Mtn West Big 12 for kids that have been developed for 3 years already. Piss on recruiting very many freshman, they won’t stick with you after a couple years so why develop them.
I think this will bring back the importance of the local kid. In the end if a player comes from Florida or from the West coast etc. they are likely gone as soon as good money is waived. You need to lock down the locals who have a family or heartfelt desire to play for the local school. If a kid is from far away he should be a portal get who is coming to get paid. Don't develop a freshman from Georgia etc. ...they will never stay IMO.

Yes. And obviously, there aren’t very many of those guys. About two per year.

You mean like Danny Kaelin? What's the difference between a third string 4* QB and a third string 4* linebacker from Omaha? It's still all about the individual kid's circumstances. IF there were 2 years between Kaelin and Raiola maybe he stays. Hell he probably stays.

If money is the main factor, then we need to be getting out in front of the issue. Why not have meetings with 1890 in late-Oct or early-Nov, at least the ones that are solid contributors and we definitely want back, and get the players one on one discussing their expectations as far as NIL is concerned? Don't even let these players contemplate thinking about transferring out because of NIL issues. By that point in the season, the player's value will pretty much be determined. Get out ahead of the issue for once instead of always being on the back foot. The player is on our roster, we've got the inside track for ****s sake, and other teams aren't even allowed to be talking to our players at that point. It shouldn't be that difficult to keep players we actually want and who have talent.

He doesn't have e much NIL value. He will find out that his next stop is the same. Too many with destination syndrome. He isn't an every down defender. To slow to be OLB in a 3-4. To lean to be D end in a 4-3. These types do well in TW 3-3-5. As far as leading in sacks, he is a pass rusher. He got home a few times. More early against competition that suited his skill.

I’ve been thinking about this and he has made a big mistake, but we will see. Nebraska provided him with a surrogate home and a place to grow and mature. I get that he feels very close to pot roast, but it’s time to be a man and stand on your own feet. He’s going to have other coaches in his life, so better get used to it now. This was the place to level up and reach his potential. I think he’s taking a big step backwards

The kid has had money issues his whole life. That is a concern for him. Whatever little more we could have gotten him to match his value could have made the difference. Like it or not, that's how it is for all of these players. The "amateur" label in college football is long gone, and it's a semi-professional league now. Money talks, bullshit walks.

Maybe you can enlighten us as to how much he was making at Nebraska and how much he will be making next year at possibly Florida state? I feel like you’re talking out of your ass per usual

You can believe what you want. And you can continue to shit on posters who bring information to the board. But the kid did have money issues that impacted his decision.

Thanks
Not pissing me off… sorry if that was your goal, as it didn’t work. Just feeling bad for someone so miserable. And yes, I’m happy.
Thanks I appreciate, but I'm pretty happy mostly especially since November. The sorry state of cornhusker football does at this point. What pisses me off is the self inflicted damage, hiring buddies, kids, and finally making a change just in time to avoid torches and pitchforks. Bad game management, silly fouls, poor OL play for what at least 10 damn years. Trev bending the university over then quitting. Other than that I have a knock out beautiful wife pretty good kids, make some decent bank. So there's that.

I believe he said on the ticket that, no disrespect to Nebraska, but he needs to go to a place where he can be developed. Firstly, obviously insulting (and nonsense) by saying he couldn't be developed here. Maybe he didn't intend it that way or his speaking skills are lacking (probably both), but I don't know how one jumps to that conclusion without knowing who the new Dline coach will be, outside of that every resource possible is available to him here.

I really doubt money was an issue.
