Jalen Loyd - portal

Seems like 90% of our high school WR commits don't pan out. Especially local kids. Might as well just get portal WRs. No more Bellevue West kids either.

Be careful about dismissing an entire group of kids from a specific area.

Just a few years back I heard the same talk about the "Florida boys". They all flamed out and we should stop recruiting Florida. We should just get local guys who will buy into the program. Now the "local boys" bounced and the majority of the fan base are salivating over Barney, Shavers, and McGahee and all the new "Forida boys" our new coach can bring in.

See how that works???

So true. Love hearing your insights!

What do you mean get to 105? We get 20 extra scholarships this year. Just ax all the walk-ons. That gets us right around 85. Add back the scholarship worthy walk-ons. Portal additions/subtractions look like a wash. If anything we need some quality portal additions or we will be back to Pelini style of just lazily giving walk-ons scholarships because they are open.

This is one I would definitely have kept if possible.
His weakness was simply his size. B1G DBs could molest him pretty easily if they could get their hands on him before he got past them. Him leaving surprises me but you’re right about the 105. There’s no way we asked him to leave.

Rhule wants to turn track athletes like Lloyd into football players. But that requires coaching and development, and we had a kid coaching WRs.
Development is out now with NIL. Why bother? Open the wallet and get what you want? Why "develop" a player just to have him scooped by a bigger or richer program down the line. This is the new paradigm.

He must have had an NIL offer because this makes no sense otherwise. McMorris and Hall still haven’t landed anywhere yet
I am surprised but that just means more reps for Mozee and Mills

The fact that Mcmorris and Hall haven't landed anywhere yet is kinda telling. I'm guessing they will eventually land somewhere. I actually thought both would actually be pretty good. Kinda wonder if they end up at a KU or somewhere in the 500 mile area. If not who knows. These guys should've at least tried to get some film on tape before leaving. Even some spring game film would've helped. Kinda makes you think this wasn't necessarily them leaving on their own .

Gotta be honest though it's kinda hard to judge any of those guys who McGuire coached. If you couldn't get on the field with our WR depth or lack thereof last year it doesn't say a lot about ya. Maybe someone can develop em and coach em up better than our guy did. OR maybe they fade into the sunlight never to be heard from again.

McGuire didn’t help the younger receivers, my question was why didn’t neyor sit and Lloyd get more playing time, the last 4 games neyor checked out

Very fair points. Crazy thing is I actually THINK McGuire is a pretty good recruiter. He's just not a D1 coach yet imo. He should've spent a couple years learning under a great WR coach. In a few years I think he will end up being pretty good all around but at the present time he wasn't a good fit for Nebraska and probably shouldnt have ever been here as a WR coach.

BTW...Foley contract up yet? Lol...

Misused. Schemed him deep on PA in 2023. Not in 2024. Incorrectly gave Neyor a lot of those opportunities.

He had more targets and receptions in 2024.

I’ve read posts on here about how countless players are misused and should get more touches from EJ, to Rahmir, to Dowdell, to Fidone, to Nelson, and Lloyd. In Lloyd’s case, it’s now been two full seasons and he’s now had two OC’s who basically viewed him the same way, maybe he just is who he is.

IIRC, the prior staff wasn’t seriously after Lloyd but Cooper loved his speed. Local kid with great wheels and a WR room light on talent, so an offer was made. Fast forward a couple of years and things are different in that room.
He was one of the ten best jumpers in B1G T&F last year. He is far from being a top ten WR in the league.

But you have to take and probably try to keep a guy like Lloyd. He’s still so young. The hit rate on any recruit is far less than some think. You have to mane gamble a little on raw local talent especially now that we have 105 scholarships. Some think we can just buy better talent or speed in the portal. I doubt we’re going to be able to outbid people for half of our starters like Oregon does.

We obviously don’t know the particulars, but there are a lot of TEs and WRs of all different shapes and sizes on the roster, so there Is a lot of competition in the pass catching game. Lloyd knows where he is in the pecking order better than any of us. I think he might be a good fit for a Big 12 team.

Yeah, Lloyd was our best deep threat. Stretches the defense. He’s not easily replaceable.
We've got freshman receivers coming in who are just as fast and more likely to have the want to for football. We didn't make a ton of use for him this year anyway. I don't think this is a huge loss.

Considering we're top 10 in the transfer portal rankings, I'd reckon that's about where our NIL is. We've been able to outcompete other programs for the guys we want and fulfill our needs.

I could see him following his former WR coach or going to a nationally competitive track team school. I think he's a really good kid. Best of luck to him.

None of those guys are as fast as Lloyd, but they may be better football players. I think Mills has to play right away.

It seems like every year we've been saying we have a good young WR room, yet its been soooooo long since this program has developed an impact high school WR recruit who made it to the finish line in their career with NU. I went through the depressing exercise of looking back at all the recruiting class commitments and you literally have to go back almost a decade to find one - Stanley Morgan. Barney certainly looks like he could be the guy but so did guys like JD Spielman, Wandale Robinson, and Lloyd based on his freshman year glimpses. Hopefully some others from Rhules recruiting classes step up and became that guy, but the attrition rate at that position might be the highest of any he has recruited so far. Hopefully some proficiency and stability with the OC/WR coaching positions will help.

Morgan, Spielman, and Wandale were all HS recruiting hits, and we developed them. Spielman was an accomplished college WR before he transferred to TCU and did almost nothing. An argument can be made that we didn’t fully develop Wandale, since he had a lot more production in his one year at KY than he had here.

But those are the only 3 HS WR recruits that have produced in the last 8 years, and they were all 4-8 years ago. If you don’t consider Wandale developed by NU, then we haven’t developed a HS WR since Mike Riley.

Barney seems to have bucked that trend, despite being coached by a kid. That speaks to his talent. Hopefully the new WR coach can actually develop his players.

When a room gets shitty, the portal is a tool. However, once a staff gets a couple of hits from the portal (NU has had a decent run of WR), it could be easy to develop a portal addiction.

I think we are saying the same thing... we've developed only a few impact HS WRs in a very long time and have only been able to retain essentially one of those through the end of their college careers - Morgan.

If we don't find at least a good portal OT I will be very concerned. Personally I would prefer an OT and a OG/C.

I get Wandale is short, but maybe if AM wasn't throwing passes 3 ft over his head he would have had some more production.

I think Spielman might have been kind of over CFB at the point he transferred.

Shouldn’t we throw Quincy and Kenny into the mix as well?

The comment was focused on the past decade. We've developed plenty of high school WRs if you start going back 10+ years, but recruitment and development fell off a cliff under Riley and Frost, and is TBD under Rhule. Bell and Enuwa were recruited by and played for Pelini from 2010-2014

Ty my brother. I just vividly remember how quick our fan base wrote off an entire state after those guys came in around COVID time and ended up all leaving out. It was mind blowing to me. So you guys really wanna stop recruiting arguably the most talented state in the country with a staff that had all kinds of Florida connections because these guys didn't work out? It never made sense to me. Just as the one about the 3 some that came from Omaha. If Caleb and Christian don't work out do we stop recruiting Westside?

These kids are all different people with all different things that make them tick. Never understood the mindset that because these guys did it EVERONE from here will. We aren't the same. I hope Simpson can get as many Florida studs as he can to Ne raska. I also hope we get any Omaha or any other stud from in-state who can help us win at the highest level.

BTW...love how your Ravens are looking this year. Do they get it done??

Let's not forget the California bashing when Riley's time was ending. Just recruit the best, coast to coast. And, being a RAIDERS fan, the only thing they will get done is BPA. I'm praying we don't draft Shaddeur.

Damn...my bad. Thought it was Ravens. Ok, well good luck with that. Sanders will be someone's worse nightmare imo. I do see it with him at the next level either lol.

Absolutely right about Riley and California guys. Because a few don't work out fans wanna stop recruiting entire damn state lol. As much talent as there is in Florida and California? Imagine coaches with legitimate ties to those states NOT recruiting them because a few players didn't work out lol.

Thank God coaches coach and fans fan lol.

NU has always pulled quality kids out of CA and Fla. The list of all time Huskers from those two states is long.

I was told a story about a metro kid who went D-1, broke out as a RSFr, transferred to a similar D-1 school, and got lost in the shuffle. Anyhow, now they are playing DII ball and killing it. Coach told me that its important not just to choose a place that you can play, but a school and a level where you can flourish. Some of these kids don't always realize that their top-tier offer isn't necessarily their best offer.
