I cannot believe I am quoting Dirk - never thought that day would come:
"You’d be crazy to think that 2-1/2 years is enough time to build a program. Nebraska can’t hit the reset button every few years. At some point, fans have to embrace a complete rebuilding process with all of its headaches and humiliations.
Maybe 10 years ago, the Huskers could hire a new coach and expect to vault back into the top 15. But the program is more Minnesota than Michigan now. Instability produces more instability. Patience is the only path forward."
But I am sure we will hire a new HC now...the negativity makes the status quo untenable even if patience would have made sense.
We do have a base here for a new coach. The next coach will take over a roster with almost all the key players and depth returning. Our last two classes should provide a decent foundation as those kids gain maturity and experience. Distribution and talent isn't perfect but it is much improved.
The last two times we had decent returning talent, when TO retired and when Callahan was fired - we made two unwise choices, at\least unwise for the long-term.
Saban makes $11M a year. I think Harbaugh is second, Urban is third at about $6M.
It's not my money, but I'd be happy to see them pay a guy like Urban $15M a year. Give him the opportunity to be the highest paid ever by a bunch. Offer enough that he just might think about it. Make a big wave about the school's commitment to winning.
Get a guy who will be able to recruit based on his prior success. Get a guy who has the rep to make it through a bad couple of years with minimal criticism and who thus might survive. A guy the players will automatically buy into on Day One.
Next year will be brutal because of the schedule. It would have been brutal if Riley stays. It will be brutal for the next guy, too, especially if the guy comes in as a potential rising star and not as an established heavyweight.
