Iowa Minnesota

Why don't we ask the kid. It is pretty obvious he was signaling to other players where the ball was landing, which if it isn't legal, should be legal, since nobody in their right mind could confuse that with a fair catch signal. You guys just love the technicality of the rule, but if you want to get technical, the rule is a "wave" and he never waved.
"Cooper DeJean said he was trying to “keep my balance” with his left arm."

The film clearly shows something other than him trying to keep his balance. The guy lied. I don't blame him for trying to help his team but between him and Big Bubba Kirk they can't settle on a reason for what he did.

They say "any waving signal" to cover any intention of spoofing the kicking team into thinking it's a fair catch. Think of the Kenny Pickett's fake slide last year, it caused the rule book to be re-written to prevent it.
It would be taken care of if you just let the returner get hit if they sent an unclear signal. However, as someone else noted, they error on the side of player safety. If that means a convoluted rule leads to an occasional suboptimal outcome such as the nullification of a great play like the one in question, TPTB are ok with that. I personally disagree with the pussification of the sport, but whatever, I am not going to win that argument these days.

He wasn't trying to keep his balance. If he said that he lied. He was clearly pointing out where the ball was going to land so his teammates didn't run into it, but probably knew saying that wasn't going to help his cause.

Did you actually watch the video replay? Although he was initially pointing to the ball with both arms, he stopped pointing with his left arm and was clearly waiving that arm back and forth, not pointing with it.

Creepy ass PJ, being creepy ass PJ:

His explanation of the whole play today was actually pretty good

Basically said where the refs screwed up was not just blowing it dead when the iowa player picked it up (dead ball, can’t do a “peter” (short punt) call and then advance it)

Said they were called for the same infraction a few weeks ago

Wasn’t a fair catch it was a “peter” or “poison” call by the iowa guy that triggered the rule

I think most people on here who feel it was the right call would be irate snd absolutely convinced that the big ten was out to screw us if we had lost in that fashion
