I was encouraged by the game

I get all the anger and pessimism on the board this morning, although I do not share it. Perhaps it is because I had no expectations for this them over the past year and have taken the attitude of they are a 4-8 team at best until I see improvement on the field. I feel I saw that improvement last night. I anticipated the D being pretty good, the offense being abysmal, and the coaching no idea. I think all exceeded my expectations. I think this team looks like a bowl eligible team now.

This game should build the confidence of the coaches and the players. I said it during the game...Not playing to kick a field goal at the end of the half is coaching out of desperation. Two false starts inside the 5 is panic out of desperation. Coming out of this game both should feel that they are good enough to win.

The offense looks to follow in NU traditions of run the damn ball, oh and once in awhile throw it. It felt like most of the success came with mis-direction, then they went away from it completely. Sat play calling seemed eratic almost forcing something at times instead of sticking to who they are. if he learns from this game the offense can be serviceable. The passing game is a problem. The coaches must adjust the passing game to the QB's ability and the OL's ability. (quicker releases) OL played better, but were greatly helped with mis-direction in the run game. I think I saw several passing situations that MN rushed three and got pressure, so OL still has those issues. Welcome to the pine Mr. Grant. I hate to see this for him as I had hoped he would improve from last year and be a lead back. Instead Ervin and Johnson stepping up and recovering looks to be the story at RB.

I liked the way the defense played. I wasn't complaining and the announcers weren't talking about ALL of the missed tackles constantly allowing first downs and big runs. Isn't that a first in a decade? I panicked when Robinson was ejected, but it turned out to be ok. I took that as a good sign of depth...Isn't that a first in a decade? We really did stop the run against a darn good running team...Isn't that a first in a decade? We held a really accurate passer with an established run game to 13 points, one touchdown. Their touchdown came from an amazing route, with an amazing catch, with amazing accuracy. It's not like there was no defender within 20 yards because they didn't know what to do. Isn't that a first in a decade?

Special teams didn't lose the game for us...Isn't that a first in a decade. I still hate, hate hate returning kickoffs when caught inside the 20. Again doing seems like coaching and playing out of desperation. We got one great return and risked fumbles and penalty's that back this offense against it's goal line. Take the ball at the 25 and help build confidence and calm the offense down.

I hope some of my fellow Huskers are encouraged by this post and share a little bit of my new found optimism for the season. Go Big Red!
