indicate that some coaching decisions likely have now been finalized by the big boys to fill their head coaching vacancies. The guys signing extensions leveraged those openings to get more money but their agents realize that leverage is drying up as things get finalized and announced. So strike while you can.

Better take. Everyone thinks NU is causing every single extension. This happens every year and there are half a dozen schools looking for coaches.

On top of that, you have people saying this job sucks and we can’t hire anyone, yet we can cause extensions out of thin air 🤣🤣🤣

In Lance's situation I think Wisconsin had more to do with him accepting the Kansas extension. If rumors are true, Wisconsin has settled on giving the permanent job to their interim head coach so Lance was now out of the running for going back "home".

Good thread… maybe the reason these extensions are happening is because we already have our guy. Nod to Pennsyhusker who has been saying this in other threads.

Same thing happened last year. It isn't about what may come down the road, its about what do you have right now. Do you have a guy you are happy with on and off the field? Is he a good fit and then you look around or perhaps you have fumbled through some recent hires and so now you have the guy who will get you some consistency. Maybe not championships but consistency like at Penn State or even Michigan State. Its a trend that will only get worse or better depending on what side of the money you are on. Any time you have a huge demand and a low number of quality candidates, it will always look like some overpaid for their return.

I wonder what’s going on with Arizona State. The fans there are VERY unhappy with their AD (same guy who hired Herm Edwards will be making this hire), and I haven’t heard any serious candidates linked to their opening. Maybe they use the same search firm that we do.

Or maybe we’re being whiney impatient little bitches. They’re waiting on the carousel to get cranked up this weekend then they’ll hire a coach. Might be waiting on Mickey😉

Look to those who either havent signed a contract or havent signed an extension.

Rhule & Fickle are the two that come to mind.

Their fan base is interesting: a combination of apathetic and hostile. Checking their message board, there’s not a lot of whining or interest. Mostly they seem like they’ve already moved onto basketball season.

I can’t remember a team giving a coach a big extension like this right after getting humiliated like KU did on Saturday.

Ok, I’ll try the optimist viewpoint:

Trev has an A-list candidate basically “N”. Being a class guy, he (aka, the search firm) begins contacting the other candidates early this week, thanking them for their interest but letting them know that he plans to go in another direction. He does this as a professional courtesy so that these candidates can use their leverage to sign contract extensions at their current jobs.

Then, after the Iowa game, Trev introduces Fickell or Urban as head coach.

If this actually happens, not only will I name my first two kids “Trev” and “Albert”, I will also boycott the name “Mark” and the month of May for the rest of my natural life.

Early in the search I thought we had 0 chance at Fickell… now I am not so sure.
Makes sense… he’s peaked, Cincy is lower level and another season or two of 2-4 losses and his chance could be over.
Not saying that is the case but he makes more sense now than 2 months ago.

I could also take a Mullen or Malzahn… or even a Chadwell.

Beggars can’t be choosers

I won't be shocked if Nebraska comes up with a big surprise. Remember Trev is using the same search firm as USC used to get Lincoln Riley and that was a big unexpected surprise when it was announced. But we'll see. Anything can happen. I just think somebody is a done deal already.

In 2019 an inebriated athletic director gave a mindless, unnecessary contract extension to a coach after a losing 5 of the previous 6 games. It included blowout losses to Minnesota and Ohio St (combined score of 14-82) plus a 16 point loss to Wisconsin at home.

You mean not be fired for winning 8? Then....yeah.
you should hope LL never wins more than 6-7 and stays in that Matt Campbell range.

if he continues on his current trajectory, you know he's not staying. Oklahoma couldn't keep their coach when the big boys came calling. Kansas likely won't even be able to keep their OC to promote when LL leaves.

I'm sure he'll just pick a hot coordinator off of one of their better conference rivals. No one really thinks of them as a football school.

Their ceiling is 8 wins. I think he can solidly get them there consistently in the years ahead. Great days ahead for Kansas fans. He's a quality coach.

He is magic unicorn for KU. They will worship him forever with even 5-6 win seasons. He was never going anywhere. He spent over a decade in the minor leagues and has never worked at a major P5 football school. Like Dorothy, he is home.
