Huskers open 6 1/2 favored over NW

Exactly...and I agreed with that and mentioned that. Now, not all of them do, but a lot do. Most of that has to do with holding on to the ball and being able to grip it when you throw.

We are talking about grass that might be like, 1.5 inches tall. Not a rainstorm or snowstorm.

So, unless the grass is so high that it is interfering with Armstrongs throwing motion, I really don't see an issue.
People talk about it like they're having to high-knee it through chest-high brush.

There's a huge difference between playing on a finely cut grass surface and playing on 6-8 inch high sod.

RR, so you're saying if I cut my lawn shorter, the leaves will blow by faster and end up in the neighbors yard instead of getting stuck in mine?!?!

I'm gonna do that!

Wait...you think it is 6-8 inches high?
6-8 inch sod.

But field turf doesn't have anything underneath it or any softness at all. Trust me, I've played on it. Just a 1/2" of fake grass right over concrete.

Remember how the NFL Hall of Fame game was cancelled because of the playing surface???

Well there you go...

Ryan field is real grass. Do you really think they grow it there? it's sod that's brought in.

Fieldturf is synthetic. It's a mat with about 10 inch synthetic blades to mimic grass. Rubber pellets are filled in to give it its depth. And that is laid over rock base. I should know I've helped build them.

Back to the original topic. I would take the points and the home team in this match up. Rationale:

In all five games while in the same conference, the game was tight into the second half with four out of five ending up decided by 3 points or less. The one game that was a bigger win was close into the third quarter.

Nebraska is likely going to have a bit of a hangover. No matter what each player and coach says, it is human nature to come down a bit after being so amped last week.

Northwestern, while having a rough start is coming off of their first win over Duke, and while Duke is not a juggernaut, it was a nice win for Northwestern and they would like to build from that.

Playing on the road for the first time all year.

I will be cheering for a Husker cover, but the logical mind says take the points and ride it out.

OHHHHHHH I didn't know either of those things! My previous post was 100% serious!!!

Hey Bud don't worry about it it's all good. You were probably thinking of the old AstroTurf which I played on too and that's crazy it is concrete with a rubber pad and then the AstroTurf.

Don't forget Omni Turf with sand under it.

The greater issue is not the length of the grass but the integrity of the surface itself and whether or not it's wet. Case in point, Soldier Field. Widely agreed upon as one of the most garbage surfaces in the NFL, it's constantly tearing out in chunks. You can try to change direction, but if the ground your foot is on comes loose, you're not going anywhere.

But that's not really related to the length of the grass on top of it.

Omni Turf I haven't heard that name for ever if I remember right I think Missouri had that on their crap field. RollingLaugh

I am somewhat concerned, but would be even more concerned if NW had gone 0-3 in non-con and coming in with their backs to the wall. Hopefully we can get up early, remove any home momentum, and wear them down as the game goes on.

There you go what? The field in Canton was artificial. The reason it was cancelled was due to the paint and plastic they put on the field. Someone dun goofed.
Jeez, it's good to know somebody's awake!!!!RollingLaugh

If Nebraska comes out and wins this game by a landslide, I will have a high level of confidence in this team. Something I haven't had for a few years now. I expect a close game though with Nebraska by 10.

So far I like what the coaching staff and players are saying about this game. Chip on the shoulder, embarrassed last year, Oregon hangover... It seems they know the task at hand and are saying the right things.
New staff. New attitude. Maybe the NW-NU series takes a new direction under Riley. GBR!

I suspect some will get a eye opening surprise with the 180° from last year's games.

Northwestern's notorious for leaving their grass high to slow the game down

Simply put it takes away the athletic advantage and it makes it a fair fight.

You wouldn't believe how much of a mental and physical hindrance this is to people used to running on a fast track.

Athletes are used to beating people with their athletic advantage... this takes that away

Try running it some mud and you'll understand what kind of a hindrance tall grass is like?

It's because Northwestern is accustomed to playing in this condition and others aren't.

There's a huge difference between playing on a finely cut grass surface and playing on 6-8 inch high sod.

That's a mighty fine collection of contrived excuses and artificial impediments. With such unfair advantage, its a wonder that Northwestern has lost a game at Ryan Stadium since they started playing football there in 1926.

Little known fact: the grass planted at Ryan Stadium is a rare strain that causes moderate to severe allergic reactions to visitors who come in contact with its surface. Northwestern players become desensitized to the allergen through sustained exposure during Fall practice and do not suffer any adverse effects on game day.

Greatest post ever. Gonna have to take Northwestern and the points.....lol

I think the confidence the Huskers bring in will be overwhelming. Don't see a let down coming. I believe they will feed off the Oregon game with more motivation than we've seen in years!

Maybe injuries or something else, but something is up with their starting defensive backs. I know one of them is out for the year due to injury. But the others, I don't know.

So if they're gonna play their new defensive backs, I'm guessing a blowout.

Ha! I will have to look up their home record but I am guessing that they are winning at a clip of 100%!

So if I play sand volleyball against hard court players will I be more competetive because sand is a slower playing surface?

Back to the subject at hand - line is up to 8 in some casinos and sports books.

More competitive? No...you will DOMINATE!

But, how? I have coached for years and I have never understood this.

If a dude runs a 4.4 on turf and a 4.8 on tall grass...doesn't the dude that runs a 4.8 on turf now run a 5.2 o tall grass?

Well, I don't agree with the concern about the grass, but...if a QB has practice throwing the ball to a receiver running 4.4, it's going to make a difference. That's a pretty good place for speed to matter. If a blocker needs to seal the edge for a 4.4 running back, he's going to have to hold that block a little longer, or the play design is off. Slowing everything down could mess with the timing. Everything is going to look a little sloppier.

The good news is...if the Huskers don't cover we can just blame the grass

Isn't that what one Michigan player blamed the Ap State loss on.

Ha! Yes they did!

It do think it's an advantage, but it probably just gives them a normal home field advantage, since there's wasn't any good to begin with.

Yes, both teams play on it, but one practices on it all the time. By the second half of games I'd assume the advantage is gone though.

So, just to follow-up on this. Over the last five years, Nebraska is 3-2 against Northwestern. Two of the wins (including the largest, 21 points) came in the tall bush of the Evanston savannah. Meanwhile, back at the fast track in Lincoln, Nebraska is 1-2, with the sole victory being by 3 points.

The only time Nebraska has lost in Evanston was in 1931.

So, logically, Northwestern must be the faster team.
