Lincoln – A pair of Nebraska baseball players were awarded for their 2016 seasons on Wednesday, as Chad Luensmann was named a Freshman All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Scott Schreiber earned second-team Midwest All-Region accolades from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).

Wednesday marked the second All-America honor for Luensmann, as he was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball last week. Luensmann was Nebraska’s closer in 2016, filling the shoes of Josh Roeder, who set the school record for career saves last season with 33. Luensmann finished the year with 13 saves in 14 chances, setting a freshman record at Nebraska. He ended the year tied for third with Brett Jensen (2006) on NU’s single-season saves list and was three saves shy of Jensen’s single-season record of 16 saves set in 2005. Nine of Luensmann’s 13 saves came come during Big Ten play, which led the league. In 38.0 innings over 28 appearances on the year, Luensmann posted a 1.18 ERA, which led NU’s bullpen. He allowed just three extra-base hits all season and held opposing batters to a .171 batting average.

A first-team All-Big Ten pick this season, Schreiber earned all-region honors for the first time on Wednesday. The sophomore from Menasha, Wis., led the Huskers in home runs (16) and RBIs (55), while ranking second on the team in batting average (.325). Schreiber’s 16 home runs led the Big Ten, while his 55 RBIs ranked second to Michigan’s Harrison Wenson, who had 56 RBIs on the year. During league play, Schreiber finished the season tied for the league lead in home runs with six and led the Big Ten with 25 RBIs. Schreiber’s 16 homers were the most by a Husker since 2010 when Adam Bailey hit 18 and the most by a Husker sophomore since 2004 when Alex Gordon led the team with 18.
