Frank had some pretty solid classes on paper. I remember in one class he had the top offensive line and linebacker core, but most got hurt or didn't produce.

Mandel from SI wrote a story back in '03 basically stating that NU was making a mistake. We had an identity that was different from any other school. He said that once we lost that identity, that which made us unique, we'd never be the same. He knew that we'd never be able to consistently win the recruiting battle for the prototypical NFL skill position players. He was right.
He's not really losing. What's he making, $3 million per year? That is all.

On top of that he hired a DC that hated recruiting and refused to do it.... We had virtually nothing in the O line to work with when Frank left. His last two classes were complete disasters.
Also, I would look to see when those players in the 98 class committed and when Osborne announced his retirement. Most of that class was his doing and the fact that coming off the most 3 national titles 4 years. Solich then got the initial push from being the hand picked successor and parlayed that into a couple of other good classes, then they saw how he managed a game and ran the program, and the recruiting results dried up.

He had a top ten recruiting class in '01 and Osborne retired in '97. He had a bad year in 2002 and canned assistants and brought in better ones that turned the program around going 9-3. Pederson screwed up Solich's last class and Shawn followed the same footsteps with Bo. In both cases, if they were going to pull the trigger, they should have done it a year earlier. That's on the AD's.
I would love to have Frank's top ten classes now. All this feel good stuff about recruiting and our highest class is #20. This year is starting to look like top 20 recruiting will be a pipe dream.
How about his classes in the 40s? You want them too? Yeah I know you can cherry pick a service to find them in the 30s. The proof was what we had when Callahan took over. Frank's highest ranked recruits didn't pan out. Hell one of them OU pulled an offer on because of a known medical condition that they knew would never allow him to play D-1 football. OT from South Dakota 4 star kid that was the plum "stolen from OU" for Frank. Never played a down. Just quit Tom, or Mrs. Tom or Mrs Doubtfire or whatever you want to call yourself tonight.
Well, his second to last one wasn't in the 40's. He also brought in 1 five star and 5 four stars that year. That would be considered a pretty good year these days.
Also, his last class shouldn't be considered in the 40's. It was in the top 25 when one considers average stars. (You can do that, right?)
As far as stealing guys, didn't we have a huge coup in stealing an awesome defensive back this past year that everyone and their brother knew wasn't going to qualify.
You obviously have no idea how college sports work in this day and age. This isn't the good ole days when only 5-10 teams were relevant. So you just want to fire coaches every 3 years if they don't work out? Great way to build a program. Open your eyes and look at the roster that needed to be revamped, and is being done. This change wasn't going to happen over night. Try understanding sports before you pop off.

I could not agree more. The day option and power football went away took away what Nebraska football was all about.
To add to this, people brought up Mandel and how we are losing our identity and we will never be the same again. How the hell can we develop an identity again if we keep firing coaches. Top 25 on average stars witha bunch of unfilled scholarships and a bunch of 2 stars and again his prize recruits didn't do diddly. Keep spinning Tom. Everybody liked Frank. I didn't want him fired but he wasn't getting it done.
I love how you spin these things. It's NOT OK to say we were really #42 last year in recruiting because people didn't even make it on the team, but it IS OK to say Frank wasn't really #25...or #7 or #9 or #10 because in your estimation the players didn't pan out.

Alvy's reputation exceeds his production. Had some good teams, most middle of the road...heck, he was under .500 against Iowa.
Every now and again, we need to have a Frank thread. Pretty clear to me that even if he didn't deserve to be canned when he did, the year following wasn't going to be as good as 03 on offense. Joe D wasn't the QB that Lord was and Lord was actually a safety playing QB. However, I think Pelini would have had the defense up to the task of keeping us in a lot of games and we would have won more games than Cally did with those same players and made a bowl game. There was still good talent on the defensive side. I don't think we lose to S. Miss, ISU, probably not CU, and we don't get boat-raced by TX Tech. The season ends up at 3 or 4 losses before the bowl.
But of course the tape cannot be rewound and played over. And with Frank, we probably bounce around 3-5 loss seasons, battling CU and KState for the North. Then again, that's not different than where we are right now.
