The top-seeded Nebraska bowling team continues its 15-year streak of competing at the National Collegiate Bowling Championship this Thursday through Sunday at Tropicana Lanes. The Cornhuskers have made the championship match in each of the last five seasons, winning the title in 2013 and 2015, in addition to championships in 2004, 2005 and 2009.
The top-seeded Huskers will compete against the top eight teams in the country, including defending NCAA champion McKendree, Arkansas State, Vanderbilt, Sam Houston State, North Carolina A&T, Lincoln Memorial and St. Francis.
Nebraska dominated regular season match play with six tournament title victories, and second place finishes at two others. The Huskers found tournament titles at the Brunswick Bearcat Open, the Track Kat Klash, the Crusader Classic, the Stephen F. Austin Stormin' Ladyjack Invitational, the Central Missouri Women's Invitational and the Big Red Invitational.
The Huskers have a 98-12 head-to-head match record, highlighted by a 38-game winning streak which stretched five tournaments from the final game of the Prairie View Invitational (Feb. 4) through the second game of the Big Red Invitational (March 2).
The NCAA Championship marks the Huskers' first competition since winning the tournament title at the Big Red Invitational. The team went 10-1, beating Arkansas State 4-3 to take the title. Julia Bond led the Huskers in the individual standings, securing first-place with an average of 232.6. Raquel Orozco and Meghan Straub landed in second in second and fourth places, respectively.
On the season, Belzeski leads the Huskers with an average of 212.7. Bond is second on the team with her average of 212, while Orozco contributes an average of 211.8. Bond, a three-time NTCA All-American, and Belzeski will be looking to claim their second NCAA title, as the pair were freshmen on Nebraska’s 2015 NCAA title team. Bond was the Most Outstanding Player at that year’s tournament, while Belzeski posted the highest average in traditional matches at last season’s NCAA Championship with a score of 217.6.
The format of the 2018 championship bracket is double-elimination style with each round consisting of a best-of-three match that includes the use of three team game formats: baker total pinfall, five-person team match, and a best-of-seven baker match play.
