How much longer before we pull the plug on Erstad? We'll be 1-4 on the season after Oregon State pounds us again.

I never worry too much about how the team looks in February. But that said, come April and May the same people who swore up and down that Erstad would absolutely dominate the Big Ten will put the goal posts on wheels yet again, and shout down any and all criticism. Because, of course, Erstad's a Husker through and through and we are blessed that he would even consider coaching at NU.

I worry a bit when Ohio State is soundly beating the same Oregon State team that pounded us yesterday, and Indiana lost to them 1-0.

I differ from the people who say "I dont care about February it is a long season". I respect their opinion but in my eyes how you start is huge when it comes to the teams confidence level.

i get that but Van Horn's teams often took their lumps early in the year and then geared up for conference play. To me that's better than padding your record with cupcake games. But like I said I'm not slobbering on Erstad or suggesting that Big Ten titles are right around the corner. Little evidence to support that outlook.

So far this season, the guys who led the team statistically last season haven't been performing well: Schreiber, Miller, Meyers, Burkamper, Matt Waldron, Luensmann. If those guys don't turn it around, it will be a long season.

Players with much less experience have been performing well so far (Altavilla, Hagge, Childs). Pleased with Alvarado, too. Schleppenbach is still consistent on defense but unproductive at the plate.

But with poor starting pitching and lack of production at the top of the order, things aren't looking good.

Oh, and Raburn (senior SS transfer from UNC) still doesn't have a hit. He's riding the pine today.

Next weekend won't be much fun, either: Okie State, Arkansas, Arizona.

Lots to like about the lineup, but at some point the leaders need to produce.

That's the problem-there are too many of our fans who like to win in baseball, but as long as they have a former Husker as coach to make them feel all warm inside, wins are of secondary importance.

Yeah, how dare they lose to the team ranked #8 in the Nation.

Maybe you should look again. Lost 10-1 to them. And getting ready to lose to 'em again and be sitting at a nice and comfy 1-4.

I'm actually way more concerned with them giving up 16 hits to Utah yesterday than what happens today. We can't lose many to the Utah's of the world and expect a good season.

You left off the part where the former Husker/ coach gave a couple of million bucks to NU. Erstad would resign before we ever had to fire him. Remember the run they went on late last year? Cold weather team starting the season slow? Nah, that never happens.

The run where we went 0-2 in the Big Ten tournament(again) and failed to show up in the regional?

I can understand your memory suppressing the B1G tournament and the Regional. Two very forgettable performances by the baseball team. Mine has also tried forgetting it, but that Two-and-Q performance in the B1G tourney is difficult to remove.

Yeah, you're right. The only way we can ever get rid of Erstad is for him to resign. And that's the problem.
In addition to the run of losses we went on to end last year, we have not won a single B1G regular season or tournament title in 5 years under Erstad(while 6 other teams have won at least one of the two in that period) and we are 1-4 in the NCAA tournament, with the only win coming over the baseball powerhouse of Binghamton and have never hosted a regional in that period either.

I was not a fan of the Erstad hire when it was made and I'm still not enamored with him. His coaching style seems to be polar opposite of how he played. That being said, I never usually get too worked up this early in the season. Unfortunately, my hopes aren't too high with this staff though.

GREAT guy. Hope they turn it around quickly, but man this is a rough start to the season.

Until Erstad recruits Arizona, Texas, California like he does Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin this is what you will have. I've said it since his second season. Nothing has changed.
Is there a coach out there, be it veteran or up and comer, that might be swayed to come be the HBC at Nebraska? Or is there one that can be hired that Erstad can lean on to help his recruiting as well as tactical measure during games?

As we can all see, he isn't getting it done and I hate to see him go out on a bad note, he was a helluva BB and FB player at UNL, but the coaching side is near its end for him.

Erstad should be killing it in those states, since all he has to do is walk into blue chip recruits' living rooms wearing a World Series ring, and Mom and Dad will insist that their son sign with NU on the spot.

Wait....what? You mean recruiting hasn't worked that way for 25+ years???

I'm sure if the money and contract are attractive we can attract that coach you described. Unfortunately, Erstad is a sacred cow at Nebraska and he will be given more latitude than most.

Recruiting warm weather athletes to come to NU to play baseball is a tough sell. I'm not making excuses for him and I would think his MLB resume would help him, but I wouldn't want to have to try to sell NU baseball to a kid from California or Texas. It's a helluva lot different than football.

Former Huskers forever!!!!

I can't believe Eichorst is ordering these kids to lose. He needs to step it up! Dammit, it's all Eichorsts fault!

I hope that when Erstad is fired, we hire Jeff Leise as our HC, Shane Komine as our pitching coach and Matt Hopper as hitting coach.
Impressive staff for sure, but have they donated a lot of money to the program? Because the key to having a successful college baseball team is to pick a coach that's made big donations.

Are you questioning Pope Tom Osborne? For shame!

This is the most talented Nebraska team of all time. They are just young. Just wait until they start pitching/hitting/fielding the ball better.

Looks like Huskers pulled this one out. Rough start but its only the beginning of the season and we still have Big 10 play when things matter most. They can do this
