How do we beat wisconsin?

Nebraska is allowing 17.7 points per game. Wisconsin is one of only two teams in college football that has scored less than 20 offensive touchdowns and still has a winning record on the season.

Wiscy's defense is great. But I think Nebraska is going to give them similar fits to Michigan when they try to throw the football. Also keep in mind their offense has been pedestrian all season with the exception of one half vs. Ohio State following a bye.

Hopefully they go all Georgia State and we can jump on them

Nebraska is also second in the country in interceptions. Wisconsin won't beat Nebraska throwing the football, unless they can absolutely command the running game. Stop the run first. That will eliminate their play action. At that point, they won't be able to throw the football.

Make Wisconsin drive the ball down the field and make multiple first downs to keep drives alive and score points. They have had minimal success sustaining drives. And most importantly do not give them the ball and a short field. Special teams and turnovers will decide the game. Someone will make a big play in one of those facets of the game and it will be the difference.

Have to be able to run the football. If Tommy is passing 35-40 times I feel we're in trouble. Hopefully the coaches add some new wrinkles this week in the running game to keep Wisconsin guessing.

I don't know if that is necessarily true. If they load the box to stop the run, I never understood the logic in continuing to pound it into a wall. You have to be able to hit quick and short passes, to loosen the defense and get them to drop someone back.

now if Armstrong isn't completing somewhere near 55% of his throws, then they will continue with 8 in the box and let Armstrong throw all day.

I don't think Nebraska can run the ball effectively enough to win the game without some semblance of a passing attack. That is unless the defense pitches a shutout or very few points and does what Michigan did. Which was get the lead and be content to punt and stop them on defense. After Michigan got the lead, the attempted very few risky plays, got a couple of first downs when they could, then punted and made Wisconsin drive the length of the field to score.

Good thread.

If 15 of those passes are screens and his completion percentage is over 60 we should be fine.

Given his history of struggling with short passes and lack of mechanic s ...

Honestly i agree with whoever said the turnover statement. +1 on turnovers we probably win. Even it is a tossup but it is in madison at night.

Dpe ... this should be the game you show you're really back. Our receivers are good enough that if we attack open space we can put up a few points. The question is if it will be enough.

What I saw vs Purdue won't work. Can't run on 1st and 2nd down most of the game and have Tommy make enough plays on 3rd and long. We need to flip and throw on 1st and 2nd down more that we have all season. Get in 3rd and short - and run some there - although we won't convert them all. I am think 60% pass - maybe a bit less if the QB run game is working and we'll need to test it to see if TA has any room to run - and hope he can convert a few scrambles to positive gains.
Defense - play like they did 2nd half vs Purdue the entire game. Do that and the offense won't have to be playing catch up
Special Teams - avoid the screws ups and blocked punts. Hope DPE gets a few returns.
Key: TAJr - if he get's a chance to win the game in the 4th quarter - I like our chances.

Let T.A. Move outside the pocket with run pass options. Hit them with a quick fullback trap a few times. Block well on punt returns

Will need all 3 phases for sure. They'll need creativity in the run game to get things going there. Need to hit some screens and swings to get UW having to play all 53 yards wide and open up the middle a bit. Ultimately they must have success somehow or other rushing. I just don't like their chances if they're gonna stand back and chuck it 40 times.

I suspect they have some plays available that we haven't seen in several games, if at all. That stretch of 3 games has allowed them to stay relatively vanilla offensively and get the W.

I am concerned for the screen game. Their lb's always seem to be in the right place, and I fear an errant throw may go the other way. Plus, I don't know how much they will have to blitz to get good pressure on TA

You can't play scared. Either you try to combat and take away their agressiveness or you roll over and die.

Is it fairly likely we give up 3-10 points off turnovers? Yep. Is it equally as likely we get that many points off turnovers? Yep... their freshman qb is turnover prone and throws a duck.

If we get to 20 we will probably win. If we get to 25 we will win. You're going to have to do more than stay in your shell to do it.

As an Iowa fan I am pretty impartial to who wins this game.

Wisconsin didnt do anything special against Iowa; just made the key plays at the times they needed while Iowa didnt.

Your best bet is to run the ball, play field position and mix in the pass game. I really see the team with the fewer turnovers wining this game as I think you are both pretty even teams. I know the above sounds very cliche but it applies to this game I think.

If people think we are going to have success running the ball early and often against Wisky, then you have been drinking too much wisky. They have a better rushing defense than Nebraska and have played a tougher schedule.

If you think we are going to line up and smashout them after what we have seen the last couple of weeks, then I can't fathom what you have been watching. Lightborn will have a tired leg by the end of the game, because there will be a lot of 3 and outs.

Look at what they did to Ohio State and that will likely be the game plan vs Nebraska. The only one who might have early running success is Armstrong, and I question that based on the health of the OL.

Again. Our best position group continues to be the receivers. Nebraska will have to rely on them to make Wisky pay for loading the box, and hope the run works well in thr end.

If Wisky discovers they can stop our run early, and can do it without loading the box, the Huskers will be in deep $#*&.

The run has not worked early vs Illionis and Purdue at home, so I fail to see why in hell anyone thinks that will work early on the road vs Wisky.

I can already tell what the game thread will be Saturday. Continued bitching about Langsdorf passing the ball. Well, damn right. Nebraska won't win this game if they dont have success through the air.

This ain't the beat up UCLA defense from last December were all about to see.
You are right on with these comments. You need to spread them out and then throw or run. Our top 5 receivers are better then their top 5 dbs. Make their dbs tackle in space. Might come down to Tommy's arm/accuracy. Establish the run is so cliche and isn't going to work with this defense and a banged up oline. Quick short passes are just like runs and help the oline. Keeps TA upright too.
