Nate's observations

***De'Mornay Pierson-El, Tyjon Lindsey and Stanley Morgan were all working out as punt returners throughout the day.

***I kept an eye on Chris Jones today at practice and he was always doing something out there, never just standing around. He was either playing catch with JoJo Domann, doing footwork drills, working on press technique, or right in the mix coaching guys up from the sidelines. He's obviously not 100 percent, but he's looking pretty good considering he's only a month removed from knee surgery.

***The quarterbacks have been looking great overall from what we've been able to see so far during fall camp. However, today was probably their worst day. It wasn't bad by any means, but they all at least looked human, even Tanner Lee at times.

***With that being said about the quarterbacks, Lee continues to really impress me. He's almost always right on the money placing the football right on the numbers of receivers and in some cases throwing them open. There were a few times today where it looked like he was making a poor decision possibly throwing into coverage, but the ball was on the receiver in a hurry. He can fit the football into extremely tight windows and it's a lot of fun to watch.

***All of the running backs look to be extremely comfortable catching the football out of the backfield. I think they will all play a role in the passing game more so than what we've seen over the last few years.

***Tight end Tyler Hoppes made a few impressive catches today. One came from Gebbia in the end zone where it looked like the ball was going to way over his head, but he went up and snagged it with ease.

***I was really impressed with a handful of true freshmen today. Left tackle Brenden Jaimes does not look like a true freshman out there. His big, strong and plays with good technique. He's worked his way up to the No. 2 left tackle spot right now. Wideout Tyjon Lindsey had a really nice practice today. On the first play during team he got behind the defense and Lee hit him for a long score. Defensive linemen Deontre Thomas and Damion Daniels continue to impress as well. Both were working at nose tackle today and it looked like Thomas was even taking a lot of snaps with the top units. Thomas got some pressure with his pass rush today and Daniels stuffed the middle during several inside runs today.

***The tight ends worked a lot of pass blocking during the individual period today. That's one aspect that some might overlook as being hard to replace when talking about trying to replace what Cethan Carter and Sam Cotton brought to the team last year.

***The energy level between Bob Diaco, John Parrella, Trent Bray, Donte Williams, Keith Williams and even Scott Booker is incredible. They are always running around and coaching guys up and the players feed off of their energy. There was one play where a running back ripped off a nice run and Parrella was chasing him and the defense down making sure everyone tagged off on him. He must have sprinted 40 yards and was high-fiving guys for their effort on the way back to the line of scrimmage for the next play.

***Defensive end Ben Stille continues to look good. He had some nice reps during OL/DL 1v1's and made some plays during the team segments.

***The offense dialed up some curveballs for the defense today and the defense snuffed almost every single one of them out. For the most part, the defense looks fast and aggressive, but also disciplined.

***The defense dialed up some nice pressures today. Several defensive linemen and linebackers were disruptive.

***Offensive lineman Matt Farniok was working at right tackle as well as some left guard today. He's a player that seems to be on the rise among the backups.

***Most all of the running backs flashed at times during practice today. Mikale Wilbon is a problem in the open field.

***It was an inconsistent day from the punters from what I saw. Caleb Lightbourn and Isaac Armstrong both had their fair share of really nice punts at times, but also had some shanks. I like how they usually seem to have these guys punting under some sort of pressure. Either backed up in the end zone or with dummies representing the shield right in their faces. The long snaps have all looked flawless all camp.

***There was one play where Stanley Morgan made a really nice catch over the middle, but Mohamed Barry was right there and could have completely lit him up but he didn't. Morgan patted Barry on the helmet afterwards most likely thanking him for not taking his head off.

***Linebacker Marcus Newby almost came away with a nice interception off of Tanner Lee when he dropped back into coverage and found himself right in the throwing lane.

Sean Callahan’s practice observation

***First of all, today’s practice really was a good one to observe. We got a very good taste of both the offense and defense. They went well over 2 hours inside Memorial Stadium and did a lot of team and situational 11-on-11 work.

***Man watching Tanner Lee operate is a thing of beauty. He makes NFL throws from the pocket and puts the ball through tight windows. He doesn’t force balls, and when he we goes deep, the ball is always in a place for the receiver to catch it.

Another thing Lee does well is if nobody is open, he always finds his running back or tight end check down. You rarely see Lee make a bad play.

***All three of the quarterbacks in general looked strong. Early on Patrick O’Brien made a great pass to De’Mornay Pierson-El in the end zone. Tristan Gebbia also hit JD Spielman on a couple of nice passes. On one of the balls to Spielman, you could hear Danny Langsdorf yelling “nice read” as Gebbia released the ball.

***Speaking of Spielman, I just don’t see any way how he’s not the starting slot. He is electric with the ball in his hands, and can make just about anyone miss in space.

***Probably the plays of the day for the offense were when Lee hit Tyjon Lindsey deep on two different passes. The first one was about a 50-yard throw to Lindsey over corner Lamar Jackson perfectly in stride. The other throw was over the top of both Jackson and safety Joshua Kalu where Lindsey just came down with the ball. They were two of the best plays I’ve seen in camp.

***Another eye-opener was freshman defensive lineman Deontre Thomas took all the snaps as the No. 1 nose tackle today, as Mick Stoltenberg was being rested. They love Thomas, and he was making plays out there. He’s so quick off the ball and has great feet.

***Tanner Farmer has locked down the No. 1 right guard spot over Boe Wilson. Brendan Jaimes appears to be the No. 2 left tackle behind Nick Gates, while Matt Farniok is now working No. 2 left guard, but still can play tackle. It will be interesting to see what they do with Jaimes this season, after learning their lesson the hard way sitting on redshirts last season.

***In general, I thought the defensive line got the best of the offensive line today, as you saw them finding ways to create pressure.

***The second group on defense today was Khalil Davis and Peyton Newell at defensive end and Damion Daniels at nose.

***Tanner Lee showed great patience on one play, where nobody was open and he rolled right to extend the play to find Lindsey.

***I feel like there will be six Blackshirts handed out at linebacker – Chris Weber, Dedrick Young, Alex Davis, Marcus Newby, Luke Gifford and Mohamed Barry.

***Speaking of Barry, on one play he dropped back into coverage and would’ve absolutely crushed Stanley Morgan Jr. on a catch he made.

***You got a good taste of Daniels’ potential nose today. On one particular play he just completely blew up the middle.

***There was one throw by Tanner Lee to Gabe Rahn that NFL scouts would’ve been drooling over. It was a deep out along the sideline from the pocket that only a QB with elite arm strength could make.

***I love the energy of this defensive staff. They are constantly running around. On one screen play, John Parrella ran 30 to 40 yards down field in a sprint to make sure he guys fully chased down the play.

***I saw Sedrick King scoop up a fumble and run with it on a bobbled reverse play. Good to see him playing at a high level.

***Cornerback Eric Lee got free on a blitz and would’ve crushed Tanner Lee from the blind side.

***Another play that jumped out was Lee hit Lindsey on a slant, but was heavily pressured by Deontre Thomas. During the play Thomas knocked Cole Conrad on his butt.

***Lamar Jackson had a nice break-up in the end zone on Stanley Morgan Jr.

***Just watching running back Jaylin Bradley play, he does not strike me as a guy that’s going to redshirt.

Matt Reynoldson’s practice observations

***Today was the first fall camp practice I’ve observed so far this year since getting back last weekend. Between the defensive intensity and the overall energy around the team, this year’s fall camp, in my estimation, is much more compelling to watch than last year.

***True freshmen that stood out today were WR Tyjon Lindsey, NTs Damion Daniels and Deontre Thomas, OT Brenden Jaimes and LB Avery Roberts.

***Jaimes took snaps as the second-team left tackle today and looked the part. Matt Farniok took second-team snaps at both right tackle and left guard.

***When the pass rush breaks to the outside, both offensive line units form an effective pocket around the quarterback. Today, it allowed Tanner Lee, Patrick O’Brien, and Tristan Gebbia to step into throws and hit their reads.

***Gebbia puts significantly more of his body into throws than Lee or O’Brien have to, which seems like it’s based off of arm strength.

Lee dropped a ball right into Lindsey’s hands on a deep post route on one of the first few plays from scrimmage. Later, Lindsey caught a spectacular jump ball downfield against double coverage.

***Lindsey looked like he ran pretty clean routes all day, and Danny Langsdorf said he’s really getting up to the speed of the college game. There were a few times when it looked like a simple out route could turn into a big gain because of his elusiveness.

***Checkdowns didn’t look clean for a lot of practice today, and the quarterbacks and tight ends struggled on some of the shallow routes.

***The offense couldn’t fool the defense on several occasions today. When the offense tried to reverse field on a screen pass or even when they tried a double flea flicker, the defense stayed home and flew to the ball.

***It looks like Collin Miller is settling in at inside linebacker. Depth is a luxury for Nebraska at this position with three full units that look like they could step on the field right now.

***Chris Jones spent a good part of the practice doing stationary reception drills. The brace is off his knee.

Tony Butler seems like he’s settling in quickly to his new position at cornerback.

***Caleb Lightbourn looks more confident in his motions this year. In a “pin the offense” scenario, he was on target aiming for the corners.

***Scouts from the Broncos, Giants, and Raiders were in attendance at today’s practice.
