From yours truly...
Recruiting thus far isn't where we need or want it to be. I caveat that statement with thus far because Riley and Co. have eight weeks or so to get things right.
I don't doubt the organization. The effort. The want to. The relationship building. Riley and his coaches are a total 180 from what was here before.
To his credit, Riley isn't naive. He has two ace recruiters on staff, one of which essentially came at the expense of his best friend.
Highschool kids are fickle. What they want in October can be vastly different than what they want in February. If the right person gets in their ear, all the prior relationships go out the window.
So, in light of all that stuff, I don't want to throw these guys under the bus. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. And sure as hell want them to succeed because holy hell, if they don't, what happens to this program?
Here's the but and blistering hot take...
For whatever reason, the results aren't indicative of the effort. Nebraska isn't winning enough of the battles. Elite talent remains elusive save for a handful of players.
Riley's a smart dude. While he's looking to close out 2017 on a high note, he's probably already working to identify what derailed the earlier momentum, and how to fix it.
Even so, just have to shake your head and ask, what the f***? What's it going to take? Not to necessarily beat Alabama in the recruiting world but to be a top 10 or 15 recruiting class?
What's it going to take and when? Honestly, thought this answer would be in hand by this point, at least with respect tp 2017.
Still work to do. A lot of it. Let's hope Riley is ready and most importantly, lets hope that he's able.
