Here is why we should be concerned

If you classify coaching into three categories as follows:

Top - Coaches who consistently have players/teams positions playing better than the individual talent level

Average - Coaches who consistently have players/teams/positions playing at the talent level

Bottom - Coaches who consistently under perform to the talent level they have

So far and based on the last five years I would have to rate the coaching staff at average or in the case of defense a bit below - granted some coaches are doing better than others but I am trying to be realistic overall

The problem then becomes how is recruiting - so far its about average maybe it improves but again I do not see this staff becoming all world in recruiting especially at NU with our inherent disadvantages as compared to top recruiting schools.

So if we have a staff that is average or being optimistic just a touch above and our recruiting is say average - how in the world do we ever expect to win a conference title at best this all puts us about 5th or 6th in the Big10 depending on the year.

This is my concern

Even though his record might not indicate it Riley is a top coach. From what I've seen so far he will win us a B1G title before he's done at Nebraska.

After the debacle with Oklahoma for the Big Twelve Title I KNEW Mark would never win one.
Hence why everyone ( or almost everyone) agrees he should not have remained the coach - Whether or not Riley is the right coach has nothing to do with Pelini being the wrong coach

I hope you are right these coaches are nice guys I would love to see them succeed

This is what I've seen after four games (actually three, had to miss the USM game): an offense that is missing the high end running game of the past few years but is finding solutions, a QB and receiving corp that are playing above expectations, a run D that is filling the bill and a pass D that is concerning to say the least. The defense is missing key contributors.
What I don't have (and could never expect to have) is evidence as to whether Mike Riley will win a conference title or not. The people that want to run him out of town or speak poorly of him either have an agenda or just like to troll. I applaud those who defend him. Riley by all accounts is a good coach and a decent human being. We cannot even begin to know whether he will meet the expectations of this fan base after just the non-con part of one season.

This has zero to do with being nice. For all the piss and vinegar being dumped on Banker they are doing exactly what needs to be done to be successful at this point. We didn't get destroyed by Utah. Oregon pulled that off. We are fighting and battling and that's what i want to see. When Riley has depth and he's developed his roster look out.

Bobby Bowden didn't have to recruit to Corvallis.
What is really wrong with Corvallis - Have you ever been there?

* Close to Oregon Beaches
* Closer to Portland and Seattle than Eugene
* Close enough to N calif to recruit there
* Good access to Eastern Washington and Idaho

Not the greatest facilities but not the dumpster people make them out to be - Corvallis is not that bad its not West Texas thats for sure

Brah…look at the history of Oregon State's program. Seriously man.

Look at KSU's history before Bill Snyder got there.

Some people need to just face the facts. Top coaches win, pure and simple. Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, Jim Harbaugh, Les Miles - all coaches who win no matter where they're at.

I hope that our HC proves me wrong, but an average coach does not all of a sudden become a great coach by simply taking a new job.

Since 1940 Oregon St. has been to 17 bowl games. Riley was the HC for 8 of them.

The real comparison comes down to how it compares to its competitors. If you are being honest Oregon State is probably second to last at best in terms of how easy it is to recruit to. And one could certainly make a case that Washington St is easier to recruit to.

Snyder would have been run out of town here, he went:
1-10, 5-6, 7-4, 5-6 is first 4 years.

WSU is literally in the middle of nowhere - heck you need to drive to another city to even get a commuter plane

OSU is right along the I-5 corridor - look not saying its the center of the world but its a nice place imo and with access to the Oregon beaches ( which are very nice) it has some attraction

I take that to be the meat of the post. I don't see condemnation or praise of the current staff. Is this so lacking in over-the-top enthusiasm that people have to jump in with teeth bared?

Riley is a good coach, my biggest concern is the recruiting. We need to be able to land a few more top level talent.

I've never been to Oregon. I'm sure Corvailles is great. But according to Pac 12 "experts" the consensus is that only Washington St is probably a tougher job. And the common theme is that it's difficult to recruit to Oregon State. According to Athlon it was ranked #11 this year by the "experts" and there reasoning was below.

"The stadium has been upgraded but still lags behind the Pac-12's best in terms of intimidation factor and size, while the facilities pale in comparison to their in-state big brother from Eugene. Getting recruits to Corvallis is extremely difficult as well. This job is better since Mike Riley rebuilt it but there is a reason OSU has won one conference title since 1954."

Snyder is an all-time legend. I don't think anyone is saying we hired anyone of that caliber. And as pointed out, Snyder lost a lot of ball games to get to that point.

Go look at the top list of 25 winningest coaches and construct me a dream sheet of folks who could come here. I think you'll find that NU was going to end up with a coach (no matter whether he was Riley, or Hudspeth or Whittingham or Swinney), that didn't have a whole lot of splash behind their name.

I wonder what LSU saw when they hired Saben from Mich. St. Fact is, hiring a coach is a crap shoot.

Agreed Snyder is one of the all time greats....and he feasted off the JUCO talent around him.

Lets revisit your insults at the end of the year and see if you still feel the same way

I find it mildly amusing that a bunch of nobodies is losing their minds on message boards, and any time a former player speaks, its usually kind of "meh, shit happens". Even with the current results, Foreman was still downright giddy about Cover 4 last week on the radio.

Legendary players preaching time, fans losing their minds, I think we're pretty safe to just enjoy the ride and let the chips fall where they may when the time comes.

its not West Texas thats for sure
so i've heard

Your disdain for Mike Riley was evident from the minute he was hired. Why don't you go take some anti-depressants and give us all a break.

You know what really concerns me? The mental health state of guys like you that day after day, come on here and tear something down. Your negativity since day ONE on this hire has been overwhelming and apparently you have nothing better to do than to try to tear down the program that you supposedly are a fan of. Your sole purpose seems to convince everybody that your are right, that Riley was a terrible hire and that he and Banker have no chance of success. Please go find some other purpose in life.
