Helfrich out at Oregon

Oregon is such an interesting coaching position. They have a lot of talent, but it is tailored for such a niche system. If the new coach makes a whole sale system change, it could be a long rebuilding process.

This feels a lot like the Solich situation.

I feel the same way. That's why I suggested Rich Rod above...or Bill Callahan...

I'd go back after Chip Kelley.. It wasn't broken before he left for the NFL.

Oregon is going to have to get a big name that fits their Nike U style and their brand of football. Phil Knight obviously runs the show up there with the UO AD. I doubt they get Chip Kelly again, but they will get a splash hire.

If Knight is seriously willing to spend $10M on a head coach, he would probably spend $3M on coordinators.

How many coaches would turn down that kind of money?

If a team was willing to spend that kind of money for a head coach and assistants, could any team seriously buy whatever coach and staff they wanted?

So who will try to hire Mark Helfrich now?

Or is he dead in the water since he was fired?

None...its all guaranteed so sign that winning lotto ticket

what about petrino? or briles? both guys would fit that system and have shown that they can coach. although each coach comes with a ton of baggage

Helfrich was Oregon's Solich. They promoted him to try to keep a good thing going, but failed to realize he wasn't the offensive genius that his predecessor was.
They must have forgotten that Helfrich was Dan Hawkins' OC at Colorado when they were god awful.

I didn't know that either. I remember watching those Colorado teams. Not sure how anyone could put that on their resume and get a head coaching gig.

PJ Fleck or Lincoln Riley are the early leaders.

Also read that the state of Oregon has a Rooney Rule and must interview minority candidates

I don't get the Kiffin love either. Lane has always seemed to me like a 'passenger seat' kind of coach. Needs a driver. Lane didn't get it done at Oakland, Tennessee or USC as a HC.

that would leave the ND job open .. I understand there is a devout catholic coaching in Youngstown
There were folks saying on the Tanner Lee thread that all some marginal QBs like Russel Wilson and Aikman needed was a change of scenery. Maybe the same goes for head coaches.

Chip Kelly is grabbing his ducks gear out of his closet. He would have left the NFL for USC last year, he's coming home.

I'm betting Frosty is the #2 option.

I could see that, but I think it's a mistake. I think Oregon needs a new direction. Not "Power Option to WCO" new direction but something new. IMO 2 things have set Oregon apart. Spread-UpTempo and Uniforms. College football has caught up to them. Heck, I think Washington State has uniforms for every game now. Frost should definitely get a call, maybe he does know a formula to get Oregon going again, I'm just not sure If I'm convinced.
