I read that some people are asking why we hired a coach that was fired as a head coach. Head coach and assistant are two completely different jobs requiring different kinds of skills for each position. A head coach is more of a chief executive position for the entire effort. Sure, it requires coaching, game prep etc. but it also includes public relations skills both within the university as well as with the press and the public. The head coach needs to be able to identify skills he needs in each assistant including their coaching, player development and motivation skills, recruiting ability etc. The list goes kn. A position coach has a narrower set of responsibilities and therefore a narrower skill set. A coordinator needs more organization and coordination skills. Some coordinators are great at being coordinators but not HC's. Charlie McBride was a great coordinator for Tom. I don't know if he had the skills to be HC, but he may have felt he was better as a D.C. than a head coach.
Looking at what Riley has done to his staff over the last two years is exactly what he is supposed to do. He could probably let those guys stay while at OSU, but Nebraska us to OSU. I can also understand why he brought coaches from OSU.
