Just a few thoughts about coach Riley from a 30 year Corvallis resident who has followed and been a fan of Riley for quite some time
1: not sure comparing Riley to harbaugh today is fair. With Riley you are not going to get the used car salesman you get 100% Riley. I think in the short term this hurts, but in the long term you get players who love playing for him and his staff. He will not grind on players or employees and in 5-8 years will not wear out his welcome.
2- his recruiting philosophy has changed lately. Early on the big recruiting weekend were in January. He felt like it gave the staff more time with the recruits. In the last couple of years they have started bringing in more recruits in for games. Especially early when Corvallis is beautiful. The problem is there is not much in Corvallis that wows a 17 year old. It's green and a great college town, but Nebraska will have much more to offer obviously.
3- I loved what Brandon cooks said when he flipped from ucla and slick rick to osu. "It's a business decision." It takes a mature and special kid and family to choose osu over other PAC 12 schools.
4-I loved going in August and watching practice. All the coaches were constantly teaching with energy. Cav and bray are stars. Funny story on Cav, his son played at Corvallis hs. I was at a practice and the chs football coach was there. I asked him if it was difficult coaching cavs son since his dad is who his dad is. He said complete opposite. He has a heart of gold and is one of the most supportive and encouraging parents he's had.
Sorry this turned out so long. If you are just looking for titles Jim or certainly urban could be safer bets! If you want someone who will make the program proud, have players who will fight for him, and I believe in time win and win big Riley is your guy. He will just choose to do it with the right type of player. He was very careful who he brought to a city of 50,000. I know it's a business winning is important. I'm cheering for him and you guys! PS- Riley kills home visits and now has a bit more to sale in January. He is a little more aggressive then he acts. He will gets some kids and their parents to flip in January.
