Harbaugh hires father of "elite" 2019 QB

Every other bigtime CFB program could have hired his dad as well, JH just beat them all to it.

I saw this story a few days ago and that guy is a legit hire. Now, would be have been hired if his son wasn't who he was? Doesn't matter to me at all. It's a legit hire that's well within the rules, and anyone from SEC territory crying foul over something that is well within the rules is the ultimate in hypocrisy.

I DO remember the uproar over the hiring of Danny Manning's dad at KU, straight off of an 18 wheeler, I believe....

Have you ever wondered HOW we get all kinds of different rules, regulations, & requirements in our society? It's because of people like Jim Harbaugh.

I get the argument that he's not breaking any rules, but his tactics are as aggressive and admittedly creative as they get. In many ways, he's no different mentally than any other criminal looking for ways to get ahead or game the system. I think he's a poor role model for young men.

You know, I'm not a Harbaugh guy, but I've really learned to dislike the attitude of Finebaum, who truly is the ultimate $EC shill.....how HE can accuse Harbaugh of cheating while living in the $EC is comical....

Then you have zero objectivity. PF calls it like he sees it. He has no problem calling out or bashing any program, SEC included.

Finebaum is an SEC shill, this is not debatable. Now if that doesn't matter to you that's fine, but its in his best financial interest be an SEC shill, and he pulls it off in incredible fashion.

I'm by no means saying I think this is a great idea. I'm saying it's funny that Finebaum is his attacker.

Finebaum and Saban have gotten into it on multiple occasions. Finebaum is a shill for the SEC, but he also calls them out quite a bit.

As far as comparing Harbaugh to a criminal. That's a reach. One is breaking the law/ rule, one isn't.

Until a rule is ineffect why is this an issue. stick'em was legal, until it wasn't. Taking advantage of gray areas has been a part of sports and business since The Greeks started the olympics.

That's a good historical reference, with the Greeks....maybe a Huskeronline first!:)

Harbaugh being Harbaugh. If the QB doesn't pan out, it could blow up in his face it could affect interest from other QB prospects. He's taking on some risk (albeit small). SEC is jealous.

We hired Barney Cotton

Pot.... Meet kettle
Barney was a college football coach already, right? And his son wasn't a top QB recruit in the nation either. Not exactly apples to apples...

Nice try, once again, to spin everything negative.

And by the way, not sure if you know this, the reason we hired John Parrella, who really had no business being hired by us at this point in his career, was because if he has a son we figure this will get our foot in the door with his son...

It was sarcasm -- sorry for not making it more clear

Yeah, that's cool.. my post wasn't referencing anyone in particular, just kind of my thoughts on the guy and what I think of him.

There are a lot of people that actually win, that don't resort to the silly things that JH does.. in effect, he's the guy who's always trying too hard.

I always thought that the guy who can do (insert whatever you want) while making it look like he isn't even trying, is the better role model.

It was sarcasm dude.

And when Bo hired Cotton he was a volunteer coach at a Ames Iowa high school
No way that was sarcasm, dude. Sarcasm wouldn't have included pot meet kettle. You saw a chance to take a shot and you took it.

And Barney had been coaching in college before the high school gig. And not just at Nebraska either.

Edit: if you want to know what sarcasm is, read my final paragraph in that post. That's sarcasm.

Agree that the reason the NCAA has so many arcane rules is because of people like Harbaugh who can't do things by the spirit of the rules, always by the letter. In the end, he'll get a slight advantage now but things like satellite camps get restricted for EVERYONE in the long term because of it.

And Finebaum really needs to shut his piehole. Someone in his position could absolutely blow the lid off of impermissible benefits in regards to NCAA football and athletics in general. But he never would because the conference he champions would return to middle of the pack if he did.

So you took it as a joke? Guess I suck at sarcasm then. Had JLB not added pot meet kettle, that would have been sarcasm to me.

To JLB: my bad, I know you like to joke around a lot. At the same time, there are a lot of posts where you are serious. I failed to see the line between the two in this case. My apologies.

No worries. Intent is almost impossible to convey and infer on a message board. Wish there was a sarcasm font

Harbaugh is the best thing to happen to college football in a long time. Find a way to win by ANY MEANS necessary. The dude is a genius. If it's not rule it's not a rule, simple as that.

Ok folks...here is the real story:

1) Johnson Sr. is a qualified coach who has been an OC both at the NFL and CFB levels (49ers, UCLA). At one point he was even the interim HC at UCLA

2) JONHSON COACHED JIM HARBAUGH IN THE NFL...HE WAS LITERALLY HARBAUGH'S POSITION COACH. Harbaugh knows him extremely well and has for many years. JH didn't need this to recruit his son.

3) Michigan hasn't even offered the kid yet. He is a dual threat and not first on our list in his year...could we end up targeting him? Sure...

4) Again, Johnson sr. is a qualified coach who knows Harbaugh already. He was targeted as the 10th assistant assuming the addition of a 10th on fieild coach is approved. He was targeted to replace Jed Fisch who took the OC job at UCLA. Like Fisch, Johnson has coached both WRs and QBs and fits the hole left (on our coaching staff) by Fisch's departure

5) Now that the 10th coach proposal is being challenged there wasn't a guaranteed job for him and Oregon swooped in. Coincidentally, the new HC at Oregon was an assistant under Jack Harbaugh (jims dad) at WKU , also an assistant for Jim at Stanford and has a current opening without needing the 10 coach rule approved...you kind of getting the picture at this point...that it is one interwined coaching tree...and the guy was available...

Kudos to those who called out the few idiots in this thread who didn't bother learning a single fact about this before opening their mouths...well typing ignorance that is

Actually it is because of lawyers suing. Work for long at any major organization and you will see avoiding potential law suits is a huge focus. As an example my company sent 50k employees through diversity training. In my training the leader stood up and asked us why was the company investing so much money on this training. You got all the PC answers you would expect. I stood up and said we are here in case the company is sued for discrimination they can point to this training as a defense. To his credit the leader said "I hate to admit it but this man is correct".

Wow...I don't even know where to start with you. What he is doing is the exact opposite of criminal. He is more like when the FBI went after Al Capone. The SEC is breaking every rule in the book but have it down to such a science that they can't be prosecuted.

Yeah, Yeah...no program is completely clean...but there is a major difference between a non-sanctioned booster buying a kid dinner and and a coach arranging for a new car and a bag of cash arriving at a recruits house. There is also a difference between a kid showing up for a visit and being giving an academic presentation vs. being shown a bed with two coeds in it.

What Harbaugh is doing is trying to combat the blatant illegal tactics of the SEC mafia. He reads the rule book. He is the good guy who bends but not breaks the rules because he has morals...you are kind of way off base.
