I hadn't really watched much of UCF's games until today. I liked what I saw from their offensive line today and think we are in good hands with Austin. Would love to see what he could do with Gates, but it doesn't sound like he will get the chance. Oh well.

My memory from his playing days were, he had the tools mentality and physically but knee injuries did him from furthering his career. It's going to be refreshing seeing a well coached team play with fire.

That's exactly what popped into my mind when I heard his name mentioned the first time. Guy was always on the injury report with his knees.

My first thought on Austin was negative.

Why? Hell if I know. Maybe since I remember him playing, therefore he is young, so in my mind young meant a poor coach.

Who knows why I thought it before, but I was impressed with the play of his line vs Auburn.

We have been subjected to losing an assistant coach or three every off season. Will that change? Will we as fans call for Frost to get rid of assistants that we think must not be pulling their weight?

Did fans call for Osborne to get rid of some of his assistants much?

I remember him being one of the best (if not th best) OL we had but always had to deal with knee injuries so he never really got to shine.

Gates probably wouldn't do what is required of because he is used to the easy way that Cavanagh implemented. He would also need to report to the weight room to lift which is something else that is not on his list of stuff to do.

Is be shocked if he is drafted.

Greg's injuries may have actually given him the tools to be a coach. Since he spent some time on the sideline he actually got to learn a lot about what the lines were and were not doing well. It's like in baseball where they say the best managers were back-up catchers.

The other thing that sticks out about Greg is he was two time Big 12 Second-Team Academic. So the man has a brain.

Is Greg the first Husker coach with a Rivals profile as a recruit?

McBride took some heat when we went from 5-2 to the 4-3. Nothing like these days. Back then TO took most of the heat after a loss.

He actually may have a Doctor's note. His allergy to the weight room is well documented.

Links to actual proof of this? I know the cool thing is to trash current players, do better

He will have to have one hell of a combine (if he is invited), if not a great pro day. Who knows though, Zach Sterup is on the Dolphins roster.
Does he start? Could of swore he does. But I follow the NFL almost as close as figure skating.

If this is true, it'll be very hard to cut it in the next level. People can be motivated properly.

I remember very well the change to the 4-3. Everyone had done it except good ole Nebraska, at least that was the line at the time. I don't remember any heat from it because frankly, we weren't stopping all that many schools, especially OU.

That first year was tough. I agree it was not hot heat. Problem was we didn't have the right athletes. Lack of speed.

Back to some thoughts RE: Austin. I am one that doesn't believe a person has to be an experienced top shelf player to be a coach. I personally know a HS wrestling coach that won multiple championships at 2 different schools and never wrestled a day in his life before coaching it. Another guy led several schools to state volleyball teams and was a regional coach of the year having never played competitively. There are some who have a talent for the details of a sport and the ability to teach that and some can be all world and still not coach worth a flip.

Good players don't necessarily make good coaches. Sometimes your best teachers are C students. They understand it doesn't come easy

UCF played the game without their left tackle. They made some adjustments moving around players which makes this even more impressive.

yeah UCF's starting Left Tackle(Evans) for every game this season had a minor back surgery early to get ready for NFL workouts. When the news broke that he was missing the Peach Bowl I was real worried to be honest that the Auburn DL would live in our backfield all game. They did not miss a beat.

Good news for Austin is he can't possibly do any worse than the last two guys. Heck of a game by UCF, and that kid Milton can flat out play. Kid has the it factor, just goes out there and makes plays. Needs to age a couple decades but I feel a movie coming on about these guys.

Nebraska went to the 4-3 in 1993 and played for the national championship that year.

I think they actually debuted the 4-3 during the Colorado game in 1992 and we stomped them that season. 1993 was the first full season running the 4-3.

It certainly didn't seem like a tough defense to implement. That defensive switch helped put Nebraska in to the title game 3 years in a row but back then they knew what they were after and why.

So you are implying that he did?
Im implying that saying he didnt go to the weight room is a pretty big deal, and one should have literal evidence when they make such a statement and pass it along as truth.
"Seems like he didnt lift weights" or "he doesnt seem dedicated, needs to change his body" are ok because they are obviously opinions.
You and another poster make it seem as though you know its fact he doesnt report to lift. If you have evidence please tell, otherwise i dont see the point in spreading rumors that probably arent true about a player.
I would agree that he could add some muscle, but I dunno how much he lifts or doesn't
If he isnt good enough for the NFL he wont make it, plain and simple.

Is this proof he didnt go to the weight room?

Ever seen the guy in person without pads on? Doesn't look like a football player let alone an offensive tackle. Has a serious lack of muscle definition in the upper body. Maybe he was a gym rat but just didn't have the DNA to define muscle.
